I'm probably going to go with the Asus A8N-SLI and replace the northbridge fan with a Zalman HS. I had considered a DFI, but that's out for various reasons, not necessarily relating to the quality of the board itself.

Hello all-

Just wanted to clear up some possible questions here!

First off, the prices you see on AMD's website aren't totally set in stone. Just because they list $xxx for a certain processor does not mean that if a retailer is selling it for less, that they are losing money. There are times when we as retailers will sell a part for less than we paid for it; but that is obviously not the normal business model, as we wouldn't be around for very long!

Sometimes some stores will get slightly better prices from the manufacturers, and are thus able to charge a bit less. This is what I imagine is happening with Monarch, but I couldn't say for sure.

The margin on computer parts is typically very small as well. We are pretty new to the game and are still trying to get a foothold, but I will tell you we are lucky to make more than a couple bucks off a single sale. When you factor in the costs of running the website, paying employees, advertising, and other overhead, as well as the cut-throat competition, it makes for a very small margin! On our X2 pre-orders for example, we make about $2.50 for each one if we are lucky.

Can't blame Monarch for wanting to make more than a quarter-pounder-with-cheese in profit. The good news for Tank Guys is at least they are getting their name out there a little, prior to this thread I had never heard of them. Monarch on the other hand I've ordered from off and on since the P1 days.

But that said, I pre-ordered this time from Tank Guys. If all goes well I might order from them again in the future.

Well, if I have anything to say about it, your pre-order will go just fine 🙂

This X2 launch (and our ability to secure a few) has been a boon for us. Trying to crack into this market is extremly hard. We've been at it for almost 5 years now (under a different name before, however) and we are just now getting a toe-hold.

This pre-order program has been very successful so far. We're still showing an in-stock date of the 7th as well, so we should be able to ship them out to our pre-orders by the 8th at the latest. We aren't billing anyone until we actually ship either; we figure if for some reason we don't get them in on time, we'll notify all our customers and let them know the new ETA, so that they can decide to keep thier order, or place it elsewhere. That way, at least pre-ordering from us is a win-win for everyone.

The response from these X2's has been incredible. We know how important it's going to be for people to get thier hands on these, so we're doing everything we can to facilitate that!

hey tankguy, can u confirm that pre-order on ur site are really for retail boxed version of the cpu rather than an OEM like at Monarch? 'Cause most ppl here believe that the first wave of X2s will be oem only, but u advertise it as boxed...

I'm also very curious whether you are indeed shipping retail (boxed) CPUs.

BTW, tanguy, u might wanna include in ur faq on ur website which states u charge tax to... might be important for some ppl 😉

Ok, it seems that from other research around the forums, that most boards (except Epox and Abit) can boot with the X2's - the BIOS updates are supposedly only to ensure that the processors are properly recognized and perhaps to keep Windows happy. Things are looking hopeful.

When is DFI and other mobo manufacturers going to release an official bios update for the Athlon X2??? I don't feel like using the beta bios for that???

yes, ours are really for retail boxed. If for some crazy reason that changes or something, I'll let you all know. But yes, it's for the boxed version. Specific model numbers are available on our website.

We are located in Michigan. So that's the only state we charge tax in. Actually I don't think our tax calcuation is working correctly right now, so any MI buyers are going to luck out for now and get away without paying tax. We'll just have to cover it at the end of the year...

Actually I just remembered too. A really quick way you can tell if AMD chips are OEM or Boxed is the end of the model number. If it ends in "BOX" then it is retail. So for example, our 4400+ is model number ADA4400CDBOX.

Hope that helps!

Is anyone else having dejaveu?? Sparco and some others came out with very early dates for the venice/san diago while Monarch was later... there was a lot of people then saying that Monarch is very often first to market... even anandtech says so and to not trust these early dates... Surprise, surprise.... no one hit their super early dates. I would rather have the truth and wait than be told what will pacify me only to be upset later.

iam interested in seeing which country will have X2 in stores first 🙂 Dont know bout US but u can buy MT30 already in germany.

Q: do the Turions run on desktop S754?

Latest news from AMD, confirming that the OEM chips will be shipping first. Retails will follow in a couple of weeks.

But then how is it that retailers like Tank Guys are expecting shipment of boxed CPUs next week? 😕

It's entirely possible it won't happen. Those are the dates we are given from our distributor.

There is a chance we (or anyone else) won't hit the 6/7 date. This is why we are delaying billing, and should that happen, we are going to notify all pre-order customers so that they can either hold out for revised ETA, or place orders with anyone else who might have them in stock.

Any information about when whole systems will be able to be bought with the X2s though?

Once we can confirm which motherboards will be 100% right with the X2s, we'll start to have them in our system configs. Or in the meantime, you can always call one of my reps that can work up a quote on a system with an X2.
