I know that the -E has FireWire, which is not essential to my life. I also know it costs about $30 more CAD. So I was wondering, what are the differences between the P5B and P5B-E, overclocking-wise? Is any one stronger than the other, or about the same?

XS.org (xtremesystems.org/forums) has threads on both of these, but overall from what i've seen, the vanilla P5B tends to be much less likely to reach 500 FSB, often doesn't even get close.
P5B-E will do that easy.

Is it just me or does it seem to take an undue amount of pressure to latch the lever on the CPU socket??

My E6400 is seated properly, but compared to my other builds (AMD and Intel) the socket lever puts a lot of pressure on the heatspreader. Granted this is my first Conroe build. My last Intel build was an IC7G-MAX3...... pins on the CPU instead of in the socket.

Anyone else think the same??

How high do P5V vanillas clock? I know its not the overclocking board of choice but will it do 400ish?

I think it's normal. AMD is switching away from pin CPU too.

What do you guys suggest for RAM? I'm picking up a P5B Deluxe/Wifi and an E6600 and I'd like 2gb for under $250 that'd be able to overclock decently. I've heard that this motherboard is pretty picky about memory.

Help! My new system is dead. Help me figure out what the problem is. Please!

P5B Deluxe/Wifi
Core 2 Duo e6600
1GB x 2 Buffalo Firestix FSX800D2C-1G (a pair, 2 GB total) PC2-6400 CL5

Not overclocking, eveything default in BIOS except for disc drive boot order. I think memory is being under clocked to ddr2-667 also (again, by default).

When I put the base system together, everything seemed to run fine. But shortly after (half day maybe) I started getting random BSOD for no known reason. Everytime I thought I had the answer, another random BSOD. Over the next couple of days, the errors were more frequent, and now the system will not boot at all. The last working boot, I was just able to get it into the BIOS settings, but locked up before I could do anything.

When I turn on the system, I get no beeps at all, except the first quick "power on" beep. The fans all go on, there is no video (monitor stays in standby), there are no leds on when the onboard LAN cards are plugged into the router, and the CD seems to spin-up then spin-down after some timeout.

I thought it might (I was hoping) be the power supply, but I just upgraded to a new one, so that has been eliminated. Left to suspect is memory, motherboard, or processor. What should I be taking a look at first?

I'm depressed. I'm building my first high-end system in 5 years, and it's dead. :(

1. Remove P5B-D board from case and place on insulated desk or table.
2. Remove all cards except video, reseat video card.
3. Reseat DDR2 sticks, make sure they are in yellow slots.
4. Clear BIOS using CLRTC jumper on board, pg. 2-22 manual.
5. Make sure CPU is installed in socket 775 correctly and heatsink is installed correctly.
6. Connect known good PSU (Quality, 500W min) to P5B-D, make sure 4-pin AUX 12V CPU is connected.
7. Try booting board, after these steps it should boot if everything is good with the H/W.
8. If it still does not POST/BOOT, try different DDR2, different CPU, diff vid card.
9. if still NG, RMA P5B-D.

" I started getting random BSOD for no known reason."

if you could say what the exact error message is....might be helpful.

MaxFSB: Went through most of your suggestions (one more time) to be sure I tried everything. Don't have another CPU handy, so could not test that. Same problem with memory, but I used just a single stick at a time for testing. No extra video card, but tried without any video card for testing. Should get at least error beeps.

RedStar: I don't think I even had the same type of BSOD error message twice. Only one (maybe two) were the typical page fault errors. I'm sorry I don't remember the others, but they were "new ones" to me. There was also corruption of the windows install, right after getting it installed it would not boot saying the FAT was corrupted. Then it started crashing and BSOD during the reinstall attempts.

Additional info. I'm sure it's the motherboard. I made a mistake in the first message, I get NO beeps at all when turning on. Not even the single power one beep. I do get the blue/red Asus MB light working as it should, but the NIC lights are dead. No LAN lights unde5r any condition. I'm now sure it's the a power regulator(s) on the MB that have failed. This is a fairly common problem with these MBs is it not?

Anyway, they are going to cross-ship a replacement out, and I'm hoping that it will prove the MB is to blame.

I promise to be more careful and write down details this time, so I have more to give you guys if I still have problems even with the new board.

Did you run Memtest86+ to test your memory? Is it set at right timing? Many time, mobo give incorrect timing/voltage to memory.

No. Didn't get that far. Was chasing the BSOD and other errors from the basic system build. MB, cpu/heatsink, memory, video card, boot drive, DVD drive, floppy drive.

I've got DDR2 800 memory that by default was being run at DDR2 667 speed. I don't know what derfault timings were being used by the BIOS.

@ fasttimes

1) Remove your RAM and install any DDR2-533 stick. With it you should be able to boot. Then set the Vdimm to 2.1-2.2 (or whatever your RAM needs) -> safe&exit ->turn off the pc (not the psu!) -> put back in your RAM. Should be working!
2) Turn off your PSU for 30secs and then back on again. Remove your RAM and try to boot without it. You will get the error beep codes (if not then your board is probably dead). Then install only one stick. That will get you into bios where you can adjust the Vdimm (like described above)->safe&exit->install the 2nd stick. Works not all the time with the first try-retry. If it keeps failing clear CMOS and do it all over again.

Hope that works 4 you!

I was wondering if anyone has successfully used the P5B Deluxe with more than 2gb of RAM?

I have 4 x 1GB A-Data DDR2-800 installed, but the motherboard (and therefore Windows) only recognizes 2.5gb (actually, 2496 mb)

I've read what the manual says about memory and the 3 gig limit under Windows XP (although I'm using Vista, so I'm not sure if this applies to Vista) but shouldn't the motherboard at least see all the memory even if Windows doesn't?

I've flashed to the latest BIOS (0804) but it made no difference.

Cheers!
Jon

Sorry kinda noob to this board... I have been messing with this new build 3 straight days. I have the P5B Deluxe board, E6300 and Crucial Baliistix 2x512mB (1gB kit) with stock BIOS 0604. Running 1 IDE HD with 1 IDE DVD drive and a 7900GS video card.

I am struggling with installing both the JMicron and Intel RAID controller, and resolving devices with problems in the Device Manager.

Which ACHI driver do you use? Intel or JMicron?
Do you need to install and resolve the SM Bus Controller in Device Manager if I am not using RAID. I may in the future.

Anyone know why Intel Chipset Identification Utility reports my chipset as G965 instead of P965?!??

When I run Intel 965 Chipset INF Update Utility, it installs drivers for ICH8 instead of ICH8R??!? All the USB drivers in Device Manager shows ICH8 USB Controller.

Also ran the Intel Matrix Storage Manager, it reports that there's no hardware support. It thinks the MB has ICH8 without RAID. And the SM Bus Controller in Device Manager has the yellow ? mark.

I then enabled BIOS Intel RAID and was able to install driver for the SM Bus Controller after patching to Win XP SP2. BUT all indication in the Device Manager still shows that it thinks it has ICH8 instead of ICH8R (USB Controller, etc.). AND Intel Chipset ID Utility STILL reports chipset as G965 although it shows the correct ICH8R I/O controller!!!
FYI, I have the IDE DVD drive connected to the lone IDE port and my single HD on a PCI IDE Controller add on card. Both are set as Master.

Any comments are MORE than welcome and appreciated. I have been scouring the web with no info for the last day. This is bugging the hell outta me.

Anyone has success with RMClock on this P5B Deluxe board? I'm able to change the multiplier but VCore remains unchanged :p Anyone know how to fix this? Trying to throttle CPU speed for max performance and min power consumption.

Everything worked fine with the board until I updated to latest bios, I downloaded the 8.04 BIOS ROM from the ASUS site as directed and used the new ASUSUpdate tool. It seemed to work and verified the flash as successful.

Upon POSTing, a warning came up telling me that the "Overclocking was not successful" or something similar. It gave an option to revert to previous settings, which I did.

Now the PC wont boot past the blue ASUS splash screen, pressing TAB or DEL does nothing. now there is nothing besides the blank screen after the asus logo, the memory I have is OCZ gold pc2 6400(800) 2x1GB.

I have these devices in the pc sata hd, dvd rom and dvd burner both ide and antec 650w ps. Is anyone having issues with getting the ide drives to work ??. Any suggestions will help to get this thing to work.

Try removing one of the OCZ sticks.
