I wouldn't have upgraded if I knew no Prescott support. These MoBos will be obsolete quickly. See sig.

yeah that's pretty bad that they could do that. I would have thought twice about purchasing if i knew it actually couldnt support prescott as well.

Okay, I just got a IC7 with a P4 3.0ghz but I've decided I want to return the IC7 because the sound is horrible and the NB fan is driving me insane. That means I've got to find another good mobo. I don't want to read through 16 pages of this thread so I'll just ask these few questions.

How big are the problems with this bored compared to other boards like it? Is the onboard fan quiet? And does the sound work properly!?

Sound works properly when drivers are installed. Onboard does cause a bit of a performance hit though.... as expected. There is no fan on the northbridge and there's a way to set plug-in (cpu, etc) fan speed to 11/16 of full, then 1/16 increments up til full speed - with a temperature based threshold. Memory timings seem to be the biggest issue.

i read on some forum baords some people refer to the memory timings as a 5:4 ratio... but i dont see any ratio settings in the bios?

does that come with later versions of the bios, im still using the bios (i think it's 1005) that the motherboard came with (just bought it recently)

5:4 = 320Mhz memory 4:3 = 266Mhz memory speeds

Hi guys,

I thought I had a great system until this problem came and nipped me in the butt! If anyone could shed some light on the problem I would muchly appreciate it.

I have the following system

2.4C Pentium 4 (not overclocked)
Asus P4P800 Deluxe Motherboard
Radeon 9500 pro
1 DIMM 512 MB Corsair PC3200 2.5CAS RAM
Antec Sonata Case
Stock Cooling

The system has never been able to detect that i have an agp 8x card and consistantly in sandrasoft and 3dmark it would be detected as 4x. So in trying to fix it I did the following.

1) I installed the Catalyst 3.5 Drivers
- error still there

2) Updated the intel inf drivers from intel from this link
- now system crashes when attempting to play games

3) Update to Catalyst 3.6 Driver
- Now system is stable and doesn't crash when attempting to play games (at least as far as tested) but card detected as 4x still. 3dmark scores increased 700 points from step 1's results!

4) Updated the P4P800 Bios to 1.008
- Now system is unstable cannot play games and card can't be detected propperly (is detected as "unknown 32bit 3.3V Shared PME Halflength Availible")

Now I'm at a loss for what to do. It seems that whatever I do I can't get the card detected at 8x. I could flash bios again (go to an earlier bios config) and hope that somehow it resolves it. What do you guys think I should I do. I'm really at a loss. Any help would be greatly appreciated!

thanks in advance!

thanks cmdrdredd, im assuming that's something we calculate manually and not a feature of the motherboard.

Well first of all, thanks for the link :)

Also, did anyone noticed of any price drops? Because I'm waiting for my P4P800 Deluxe to arrive (I already bought it), and I really was thinking of upgrading for a Prescott slot-478 processor in the future ... that was quite a strike from ASUS. (is it time for me to stop supporting ASUS products?)

I just hope Prescott will not be lunched on a 478 socket, for me that would be the only justified reason for this change.

likewise

they had the power requirements and everything so I dont see why the change happened as such a surprise unless intel just changed something randomly.

Hi kingofbongo,

On page 2-18 of the ASUS P4 user guide:

"If installing the ATi 9500 or 9700 Pro Series VGA cards, use only the card version PN xxx-xxxxx-30 or later, for optimum performance and overclocking stability."

What version is your 9500 Pro?

Here is the system I just built and have running:

Antec Sonata w/380w PSU
P4 2.8c Retail (800mhz FSB)
P4P800 Deluxe Motherboard
2 x 512mb Corsair XMS 3200 (CMX512-3200C2PT v1.2)
ATI Radeon 9600 Pro 128mb
Audigy 2 OEM
1 WD1200 SE 120mb 7200 rpm 8mb cache
Liteon 48x24x48x16 CD/DVD/RW LTC-4816H
Samsung Floppy Drive
XP Pro

I'm running the latest version of ASUS PC Probe to look at my CPU and MOBO temperatures. What is considered a safe temperature range for both the CPU and MOBO?

Thanks,

Scott

The default high limit values that AsusProbe shows you are what Asus considers to be max safe temps (I believe).

FWIW, my 2.4C overclocked to a bit over 3 idles with a CPU temp of 36 C, and a motherboard temp of 38C. At 100% CPU load, my temps hit 48 C CPU and 50 C motherboard. This is using a Zalman CPS-7000Cu sink/fan, and 3 80mm Panaflo case fans.

Whenever you change your memory timings, it's always a good idea to run a memory test program to make sure your new timings will work for you. From what I've read, memtest86 is one of the better testers. Very easy to use.

Try setting your dram burst length to 4, then make sure you're still stable. If you are, leave it there. If not, set it back to 8.

Install those drivers before *anything* else. You'll probably have to reformat. I was having the *exact* same problems. Here is what I did:

Reformatted and installed Fresh XP
Installed Intel chipset INF
Instal SP1
Instal DX9a
Install vid and sound drivers

Works like a damn!

8 is the faster/more aggressive setting.

ok,
I'l probably get yelled at for cross posting, but I should have asked this question here, since we're all using the same board- here goes:

Just installed a new Raptor as primary boot drive- switched my 80 gig to a storage drive, and now I notice the HD LED stays on continuously, at about 1/3 brightness! It flashes brightly during normal disc access, during seeks, but why is it on continuously now? Any clues?
Anyone else have the same problem with this board/ HD combo?

Hi folks,

I have read this entire thread through a couple of times now so I feel I'm familiar with some of the possible problems with the p4p800 Deluxe.

Let me start out by saying that I am a ship-jumper as my current rig (which was my first build) is an amd one. Here are the specs:

Palomino 1600
Gigabyte 7DXR (amd 761 chipset)
2x256 pc2400 ddr
2 seagate barracuda iv's as single drives (they suck in raid 0)
Asus Geforce 3

I built this rig about 2 years ago and I'd like to build anew. I have been eyeing up and researching the following components for my new rig:

2.4c
P4P800 Deluxe
2x80 gig WD SE's to put in raid 0 on the VIA/Highpoint controller
ATI 9800 pro

Now here's my dilemma.....I am not sure which DDR to get as some of my choices may be overkill/underkill on this board. I want to go for 1 Gig this time as this is primarily going to be a gaming rig (I want it to be "snappy").

Here are the DDR choices:

2x512 Corsair pc3200 C2
2x512 Corsair pc3200LL
2x512 Corsair pc3500
2x512 Kingston HyperX pc3500
? <------- whatever else you think!

What I'd like to do with this rig is have the ability to overclock the FSB up to about 250 max. I never really was an overclocker but I've read alot of success stories with the 2.4c and the P4P800 Deluxe. I'd like to be able to hit 3.0 ghz at some point.

Most likely I will run the cpu at stock to have PAT (HyperPath) enabled, but then again I would like the ability to overclock.

I know that o/cing is pretty much a crapshoot no matter what you get, but I want to see what you people would consider a "safe buy" for what I want to do.

like I said I've read through this entire post and still there seems to be no definitive answer on what DDR works the best.

While you're at it......do you see any problems with the components I'd like to buy?

Thanks in advance!

GungaDin19,

According to RAM Guy with Corsair, you should either get the CMX512-3500C2 or the TWINX1024-3700. You can find Corsair forums here: http://www.houseofhelp.com/forums/forumdisplay.php?s=&forumid=130

Here's my setup:

Antec Sonata w/380w PSU
P4 2.8c Retail (800mhz FSB)
P4P800 Deluxe Motherboard
2 x 512mb Corsair XMS 3200 (CMX512-3200C2PT v1.2)
ATI Radeon 9600 Pro 128mb
Audigy 2 OEM
1 WD1200 SE 120mb 7200 rpm 8mb cache
Liteon 48x24x48x16 CD/DVD/RW LTC-4816H
Samsung Floppy Drive
XP Pro

With the CMX512-3200C2 I'm not really able to overclock that much if any, right now I have my times at 2-3-3-5-8 and the DramVoltage set to 2.75. I notched up the FSB to 201, not much I know. I have performance on Auto and MAM on Auto. But at these settings I work okay, to be honest...I really don't know what the heck I'm doing. Oh and I've been slightly better SiSoft Sandra Memory Benchmark scores when I place the sticks in the black slots as opposed to the blue. I also turned off USB legacy support.

Hope that helps. If I were you, I would spend the extra and get the memory recommended.

TwinX-3200LL, XMS 3500 and TwinX-3700 all *likely* use the same RAM modules but the spd is clocked differently:

3200LL = 2-2-3-6 (used to be 2-2-2-5)
3500 = 2-3-3-7
3700 = 3-4-4-8

If you are oc'ing the FSB to 250, you will likely want to use the 5:4 divider to put your ram back to 400 DDR in which case even the 3200 LL is more than enough. If you are trying to run 1:1 with ram at 500 DDR you might get the 3700 to do it but I highly doubt it, especially not in dual channel mode (this mainboard is VERY picky about timings).

Thanks for the replys folks

So I should be safe with corsair pc3200LL? I see alot of the reviews on the p4p800 are done using this ddr. I just wish it wasn't so expensive ($310 for a gig...ouch)

I just didn't want to pay more for memory beyond what I'm hoping to achieve.

Speaking of which, I'm building a gaming rig for now around the components I've mentioned that may turn into a multimedia (ie DVD burning rig as well). I've been using 2x256 in my current rig with XP and have been happy, but i hear that 1 gig is beneficial for gaming/video encoding.

Is this true? I don't want to insult anyone's intelligence, but really I don't know
