my rig is somewhat similar to yours (ocz gold matched pair 256 x 2) and it is oc'd (2.4c) to 3.00 at 2.5 4 4 7 8 just fine in turbo mode (ymmv on this as I see alot of posts where turbo won't oc for some people)... also someone a bunch of posts back asked and I can confirm as I am doing it , the promise edge ide port CAN be used for a single or double drive in non-raid mode set it in bios to s-ata + p-ata and install the ide driver for it in xp Not the raid driver

Well the temp probe was a time consuming BASTAD for sure. What I had to do was fold the probe over onto itself so that it did a 45 degree angle, I was then able to tape it down long enough while getting the strands perfectly aligned between the pins of the cpu. This whole process along with putting on my custom heatsink and Fan took me hours! It was worth it though because now I have tempurature readings on the Hardcano that I wouldn't have otherwise. They don't exactly jive with AI's readings (higher readings on the Hardcano by a few degrees) but they do fluctuate up and down exactly the same, so I trust the readings I'm seeing on the Hardcano.

As for the RAID, I haven't gotten that far either, I have one drive which is currently in the ICH5R Raid socket but I haven't messed with the Bios at all. Once the drivers are all in (windows) and I've taken care of the wiring situation, I'll do some benchmarks in it's current settings then begin clocking!

As for the USB and Firewire, your way ahead of me man, I haven't attempted to hook those things up yet, although, that is the only thing I haven't hooked up. Once I figure out a good wiring scheme I'll get those babies working. Yeah I thought that was kinda lame that they didn't put a connector on the end of those wires for the firewire, but for some boards they wouldn't be in the same pin configuration so I guess that makes sense. I did go through the manual though and look at what was there, it looks like all the connections are there so you can get it working. I'll find out soon enough.

figured out the blowhole usb fwiw the TT case has single row connectors the board has double row put BOTH single pin plugs on a single double pin mobo connector. orient using the ground pin \ wire.. voila worked for me .. now the headphone \ mic thing isn't too bad but it's so tight for room in the case I need to remove stuff to reach it easily so it will wait .. firewire device I have none so no concerns, thanx for the tip on the temp probe I may try it if I need to remove the cpu sometime

Have you tried using the back USB ports? Also, as I mentioned in a previous post, Service Pack-1 does not always correctly identity the USB controllers on the Canterwood chipset. In Device Manager, you should see a "USB2 Enhanced Host Controller - 24DD" under Universal Serial Bus Controllers. If it's not there, your USB 2.0 devices may not be working properly. One possible fix is to delete all the USB host controllers, reboot and let auto-detect try to find the correct bus controllers. I've also heard installing the latest Intel INF (5.0.2.1003) helps.

Yeah I have tried the ports on the rear and they work fine. I will delete the devices in the device manager tonight when I get home and reboot to see if that picks it up. I think I've tried this though. Anyway will try again. I believe I have the latest Intel Inf installed aswell but I will check that too.

mine lists all eight as Intel © 82801EB USB Host controller - 24D2 are these usb 1.1 or 2.0 ?

nevermind they were indeed 1/.1 I reinstalled sp1a and right clicked on the standard enhanced usb host controller and updated the driver ... let it find it .. and it installed usb2 support ok

Just got it this past Wednesday and from newegg.

Thanks. I had thought about getting it from them but they are higher and reading their user reviews shows customers getting a lot of DOA mobo's for some reason. GameVE.com has it for $184 and they mentioned "Newest version" @pricewatch so that's what made me ask about the Rev. #.

Let me make a few points however before you make your purchase:

newegg sells more volume of these things then probably anyone on the planet. The simple fact that this is the case should make you realize the math involved.

I too looked at those complaints and then realized the following points:

1) I'm by shear number, gauranteed the latest and greatest boards from them due to the fact they sell more and are always filling their stock.

2) Your going to see more complaints simply because of this volume and what you have to keep in mind is that most users who are happy with newegg don't always post their happy with them (which btw I haven't even done yet simply because I'm a busy guy and it's not high on my radar). But if you have a problem, it's definately high on your radar!

3) The number of people who post they are happy with newegg out weigh the negatives a 100 fold.

With first hand people such as myself conveying their good fortune, what's to worry about? I'd be more afraid to go with a company who didn't have the same amount of turnaround as these guys, and who don't even register on the customer satisfaction scale compared to newegg. This one point is what ultimately made me buy from newegg rather than the other guy.

$7 bucks isn't reason enough for me to go to someone else when they have the kind of service I and many others experience when purchasing through them.

Hope this didn't cloud your decision but rather, helped make you feel more at ease with going through them. I can only tell you how great they've been for me. Every single box and package was in perfect shape and this entire setup I have running right now has been humming since I flipped the on switch!

I have to agree I got all the parts I listed for my new rig above from them and all the parts for the previous 2 systems I built from them also with the exception of my HDD;'s 'cause I got them cheaper at Office Depot and \ or Staples I have never had a single problem with Newegg even for an rma of a doa refurb cdrw that when I asked they even waived the 15% restock fee when I told them by email it was doa .. for a few dollars here or there they are more than worth it imo this time I ordered Monday morning it was shipped by monday night and delivery by fedex was on Wed. beat that for 12 dollars shipping on a mobo hsf, ram, full tower, case cpu, and power supply !!

I like Newegg, we've been ordering from them 6 yrs+, since before they were Newegg and the merger (egghead.com). I got a smart media card from them some time back and it died after one use, but returning to them is easy. All those returns made me a bit uneasy though, however your points are valid.

couldnt locate them on resellerratings but pricegrabber listed them with reviews (ps was only 191 at newegg + free shipping... see why that was a dollar well spent )

Sorry I've never used PCAvailable so I couldn't tell you one way or the other how good they are. Unfortunately your now having to wait 5+ days on top of it. What a bummer!

One thing is for sure, sometimes saving a few bucks isn't worth it in the end, but you never know until you try. Personally, I'd love to find other reliable/fast/excellent merchants to purchase from, it keeps companies competitive when there are more to choose from. I do have another place to recommned and that's HeatsinkFactory.com. They shipped out my SP94 immediately and had it within a couple days so they are a good source so far for me if your looking for cooling type equipment.

newegg at the time of my order didn't have this heatsink so I had to look elsewhere and found those guys, they did as great a job as newegg on shipping their stuff right away and it was in perfect shape. Just an FYI

One last recommendation. If your looking for the best in Power supplies, PC Power & Cooling is the only way to go. Most o'clocker's chince out on this piece of equipment when building their machines and gues what? it's almost more important than the motherboard you choose, if your wanting a stable over clocking machine.

Hey and I "third it". I was not aware of this until fairly recently. I found out that PS's can cause memory errors and crashing! I've seen benchmarks comparing them and the number of memory errors. The more stable and quality filtered one is, the more stable the PC.

When starting to plan for my first build early in the summer ,
I originally thought on purchasing a Intel 3.0 800 FSB CPU to go with my Asus P4C800 Deluxe

With this in mind , I picked up a Thermaltake Spark 7 , along with my Kingwin 436 case

Since then , and thanks to JHITES( and this forum ) my CPU will be a Intel 2.4 800 FSB
( I'd like learn how to overclock)

My question is.

Can I use the ThermalTake Spark 7 on the Intel 2.4 , given that it will be OC'ed past 3.0 ???

Recently I was scouting my local PC stores in town and saw a great price on a Vantec AeroFlow VA4-C7040
couldnt resist , so it came home with me

Now that I have 2 Heatsink Fans , which should I use

jacked up the FSB to 250mhz (2.4GHz oced to 3.0GHz),
(dual chan 2-512MB Kingston HyperX 3500) DRAM at 320(5:4) but at SPD
Performance = Auto
VCORE = 1.7v
VDimm = 2.75v
AGP = 1.60v
This setup ran stable overnight.

The fun starts after I started tweaking for higher performance. No post several times AND THEN
"BAD BIOS CHECKSUM"
The motherboard then reads my CDROM for default bios ROM file and flashes it. After that it tells me to reboot.
When I reboot(power down, power up), it goes into this cycle again.

Has anybody experience this kind of loop? Do I need to clear the CMOS RAM to get out of this loop?

Try clearing the BIOS using the CMOS jumper. Also, remove the CMOS battery for a minute or two and then put it back in again. "BAD BIOS CHECKSUM" is sometimes caused by a bad battery. I know your board is new. But you may have gotten a battery that's defective.

After clearing the CMOS, I was able to recover from the nasty loop of getting "Bad Bios Checksum" but I had to reflash my bios back to 1011.
This mobo is better than the MSI 865PE Neo2-FISR which I could only get up to 2.7 GHz from the same 2.4C P4. I am glad I made that change. I am using stock HSF with ASCIII thermal paste.

CPU-Z shows my performance mode is disable. I know I read somewhere that PAT is disabled when you overclocked but has anybody confirms that?

The best way to tweak is using ClockGen which allows you to set your FSB dynamically. This way, you don't have to rely on CPR feature of the mobo if you overclocked to much.

I have mine (2.4c) oc'd to 257.2fsb for 3.1ghz turbo mode and pat is enabled according to cpu-z my ram timings are set at 2.5 4 4 8 with ocz gold matched pair pc500 ram

Hmmm, did you use 1:1 or 5:4 timing? Maybe setting Performance to "Turbo" turns PAT on?
