It's always best to get rid of yellow marks in the device manager first. That changes on each install. I'm only speaking of the yellow marks related to the mobo, not video card for example. So, which ever yellow marks you have for anything related to the mobo, install those drivers first and get the latest ones from the Asus website. Of course you'll have to get them on another PC since your LAN drivers won't be installed.

There is a very good install guide here. I always download all the latest drivers for all my hardware including the on-board drivers that I will be using and copy them to a CD so they are available without having to download as I do the fresh install. This includes the WinXP Service Pack as this is the first thing I install after the OS is loaded even before specific hardware drivers that may have yellow !!! next to them. For USB 2.0 you will need XP SP1a, right click update driver and let XP find the driver automatically. If you are going to be using the Promise Controller you will also need to put the drivers on a floppy and use the F2 key when you start the install to load drivers for you IDE or RAID HDD's on that controller.

Well I tried v17 beta but this problem i get is stange let me tell my story.

This is a new install mobo that came with 1014 I wanted to update to the latest bios so i went to v16
everything was cool but for some reason my promise raid was not being detected nor did it detect the ATA-133 drive attached to it so i went to v17 same thing after I tried other things think it was cable or master/slave config nothing worked went back to v14 the original bios and Boom raid was the promise raid was detected again.

im going to find out what i can on this but at this point im not sure why it would do that any ideas anyone??

FWIW, I don't recommend SP1a, it's buggy. I use SP1 and it has the USB 2.0 drivers. 🙂

Did you clear the CMOS and re-do all the settings all over again? I don't know how it's possible, but when my BIOS got fried (1014) I added a backup BIOS chip from another P4C800 backup mobo (1009)...and (get this) IT HAD THE EXACT SAME SETTINGS AS 1014!!!!!! This is IMPOSSIBLE because the 1009 chip was TOTALLY different with different settings!! It would seem there is some kind of a "holding cell" for lack of a better term, that stores the old BIOS settings! It's not any cap since days passed. So, you have to clear CMOS to be sure the new BIOS is indeed loaded, then set it all up again.

Hi, guys.

Since I haven't posted here for about 110 pages, I doubt any of you remember me 😛

My system has been running pretty well, but I've been having IRQ problems, it seems, randomly. I ocasionally get the ol' BSOD with IRQL_NOT_LESS_OR_EQUAL or PAGE_FAULT... and stuff like that. I looked this problem up and realized that it's probably the whole IRQ sharing deal. My Audigy 2 ZS, for example, shares an IRQ with something else, and it's been having crackling noise problems, especially when CPU/harddrive are under heavy loads. I also noticed that the RAID controller is sharing an IRQ with something, as well (although not the same one as the Audigy).

I know that my BSOD problem is caused by either the RAID controller, the Audigy 2, or both, because, among other reasons, I never had a BSOD on WinXP until I installed my second hard-drive and the Audigy.

I was thinking I would go to BIOS and get those IRQ's to be exclusive, but the list of IRQ's only went up to 15 (skipping quite a few numbers), and I think those were only the free ones, anyway. The Audigy is using IRQ 20, and the RAID controller is using 23. Is there any way I can fix my problem? Thanks a lot for the feedback! 🙂

Sorry I don't have much to add on this. All I can say is XP can share IRQ's with no problem, unlike 98x. XP is much more forgiving in that respect. I'd be more inclined to believe it's the Audigy drivers if your new HD is identical and you started over from scratch. Also it could be just a bad install if you started over. I had that exact same error message before and sorry I can't recall what was doing it, but it was not an IRQ problem. Enter that at Google and you'll see some info on it.

A quick check of the hits says this is a driver issue or hardware compatibility issue.

I would not suggest that you set the IRQ's manually using WinXP. From your post it does not sound as if you have done a fresh install after adding the new hardware. I would download Service Pack 1 and all the most current drivers for your hardware and do a fresh install. Copy SP1 and drivers to a CD to use for the install. XP should assign the IRQ's correctly and you may have some residual in your registry that could be causing some issues. There is a good guide for installation order here.

Ah, but I DID have a fresh install and everything was fine. I also DID google that problem. I noticed that some people say that Creative sounds cards have a problem like this, even in XP (and I AM using SP1). I also have the latest drivers for everything.

I think John meant (and me) that you have to have a fresh install after you added the new HD in RAID. If you did, then it's probably the sound card/sound card drivers.

You might want to move your PCI cards into different slots. Check your manual for which PCI slots are shared and try to put the sound card into one that is not being shared with some other onboard device or card.

Where in the manual does it say which ones are shared? :-\ I first put the card in slot 5, which is the recommended one for any PCI cards, but I switched it now, and that hasn't helped. And yes, i DID do a fresh install after putting in the second hard drive. I zero-filled it and everything.

Do you know if there are any custom Creative sound card drivers or anything like that, if it is, in fact, simply the Audigy's fault?

Dunno. Just search for the PDF for "IRQ" and you should be able to find it. Have you done any research on that card's compatibility on this mobo? Maybe you'll find something. Might also be a flaky Audigy.

In my manual it is in section 2.6.2 under Configuring an expansion card page 2-15 IRQ assignments for this motherboard.
Slot 1 is shared with Slot 5
Slot 2 is shared with On-board LAN
Slot 3 is shared with On-board USB2.0 and On-board SATA
Slot 4 is shared with On-board 1394

Note that my board is the P4C800-Dlx and not the -E but most everything is the same on both boards expect for the -E has the ICH5R chipset vs mine only has the ICH5.

I have my Creative card in PCI Slot 4 and using the LiveDrv UniPack, since I do not have any 1394 devices it is disabled in the BIOS. My card is just a SoundBlaster Live, however, not one of those fancy Audigy thingies. 😉

I have all the MoBo settings (in set-up) on standard/auto and the latest system BIOS installed (1016.001 2/23/04) yet the system is running my memory at,"DDR Frequency 266 Mhz Dual Channel, Linear Mode

I ran test on the memory and am even more confused now. I ran Microsoft's freeware, "Windows Memory Diagnostic" and the memory failed every test. I thought that odd and ran the test per chip/bank. The test showed bank 0 (A1) as generating all of the errors. I took the DIMM from bank 3 (B1) and placed it in bank 0 (A1) leaving the bad DIMM from bank 0 out of the system. I again ran the test and again the memory failed all test. So now I extracted the memory that was originally in bank 3, now in bank 0 and removed it from the system. I replaced it with the memory that was originally in bank 0 and put it back in bank 0 while keeping the other out of the system. Again the memory failed all test. I also tested all memory with the cache turned off as well as on and always the same results. I have also run Memtest86 (1Pass) and received no errors.

Before testing the memory, I updated my BIOS and received an unexpected message, "Check Sum Error." I was given the choice of pressing F1 to go to set-up or F2 to reset defaults-I choice F2.

I also ran CUO_Z and it reported that my Motherboard was a P4C800-E Deluxe Rev 1.xx and that the chip was ICH5 not ICH5R. Isn?t this an old version of the board. The BIOS was an older version (I think .0008. xxxx) and most of the software was different then that exhibited in the manual. Even the DVD software was outdated and not supported by the OEM any longer.

I asked ASUS for help but they either didn?t respond or acted as if I was dumb ? never a solution. I asked ASUS:
How do I get the system to recognize that the Ram is DDR 400 and run accordingly?
Could the BIOS be the cause of the memory errors MS Mem Diag is reporting?
Is there a problem with the motherboard - possibly Bank 0 (A1)?
Is Rev 1.xx an older production run?

I yanked the board and have returned it to newegg for replacement but am left with several questions and could really use some help.

I had a RAID 0 set up on the promise controller because I couldn?t get the top SATA controller to work when I initially set the system up. I was a little angry at the lack of support and screwed up when I yanked the motherboard to return to newegg. I left everything on the HDDs (RAID 0) and haven?t a backup. I have a lot of hours in downloading drivers and reconfiguring my peripheral devices to work with XP and all of the downloads are on that RAID.

Please help!
Is Rev 1.xx an older production run?
Are the problems I experienced common with this board?
Will I be able to put the board back in and fire up the system?
If I can just plug the drives back up and run - is it also possible to connect the drives up to the top controller RAID 0 and just run there instead of the promise?

Most if not all of that has been discussed at this thread...mostly by me! 🙂 Without going into a lot of detail: Asus IS aware of the WMD test errors, as is M$! There is something wrong with the Promise controller, and or in relationship with the WMD test. Disable the Promise controller, and your errors will go away. That is, if your memory is OK. I and everyone else that ran it with Promise enabled and something connected to it, got tens of thousands of errors. Disabled = clean run.

Yes, Rev. 1.xx is older. Last time I checked, Rev. 2.0 was the latest, but that was several months back. Mine is Rev. 2.0. All revisions and BIOS versions are plagued with this problem.

You have to manually set memory settings in the BIOS to "DDR400" regardless of memory type if you want it to run its fastest 1:1 setting.

After several reformats of my WD740 on the Promise controller, on my 800-E Deluxe, this last time I decided to try it on the ICH5 since I thought it being on the Promise controller may be causing the oddball behavior I was getting on XP Pro. Didn't fix it. So, evidently having an OS HD on the Promise controller doesn't seem to have those WMD errors manifest themselves in an OS. I'm still having delays when clicking anything. Folders take a while to open, menus take a while to open, etc, and I was getting a lot of "Fault Bucket" crashes when closing apps! However I haven't noticed any Fault Buckets yet since on the ICH5, but it's only been about a week. But this go 'round I'm also getting strange typing delays!! Sometimes when I type an email in OE, nothing happens! Then after a couple of seconds, the word that I had typed that wasn't there, instantly pops up all at once! This also happened yesterday for the first time while typing a URL in the address bar! Exact same PS/2 keyboard.

EVERYTHING on XP Pro was/is set EXACTLY the way it has been for years. It is NOT M$ updates that's doing it, NOT software that's doing it, nor is it my AIW Radeon 7500 since it's the same card I used on my P4B533 which NEVER crashed or had errors. I seriously doubt it's my CPU or memory since I RMA'd my first memory batch & CPU and got a hand picked ones in return. My 800-E Deluxe mobo is also new since I also RMA'd my first one of those! This only leaves the WD740 causing it, or a driver issue somewhere for the mobo, or still could be the mobo itself as in the Promise chip since I still do have a Maxtor ATA133 storage drive on the Promise controller. I guess next I'll have to try and disable the Promise/Maxtor and see if that changes anything. If it does, then Asus should be "shot" for releasing this screwed-up POS mobo with a Promise controller on it!!!!! I spent more than a month screwing around with this thing trying to find out what was causing the WMD errors, and since then (as I said) several reformats over a few months trying to get a stable setup! For their sake, it better not all boil down to this Promise controller! I find it rather interesting their new mobo's now use Silicon Image controllers!! THAT should tell you something!

Clint, I have seen this when someone at work had his system filled with spyware. It got so bad he had to reformat. I run WMD without issues but with Maxtor SATA Raid 0 drives on the ICH5R.

P.S. What are the new ASUS MoBo's about...still 875P based?

Dave, My name is John and I am the guy with the memory? problems. Thank you for posting a reply concerning this issue. I have read the past 40 pages of this thread and can't find an answer for several issues. I will get my replacement motherboard tommorrow and am anxious about what I will find upon re-installation. I have two 34 Gig Raptors on the promise controller as my primary drive (only drive). If these problems are restricted to the Promise controller than I may want to transfer the RAID 0 to the top (ICH5R) controller. In my irritation at having to yank the MB I neglected to back up my drive and therefore suspect that I may have to reinstall it to the promise controllers and hope for the best. I think I may face several issues even doing this. This is my first system (experience) with XP and I didn't activate the program before pulling the board. I only had about 10 days grace left and now wonder if it will shut down once I install the new MB. Another issue I suspect I may face is that the old board was a REV 1 and I have asked newegg to ship the current Rev, Rev 2. I wonder if that may make a difference with the system recognizing the RAID. In addition to this I am at a loss to know where my RAID would be best off. Is the top controller best or are the problems with the Promise just superficial and am I fine keeping the RAID there. I wonder also is there a way to reinstall the RAID directly to the intel controller or must one at least restart the system on the promise side and deal with the changeover later. And finally (if I determine the Intel controller is the best solution) what would be the best way to accomplish the transfer of the RAID to the intel controller. That ain't it. 😉 I've reformatted 3-4 times so far. I also run
SpywareBlaster, SpywareGuard, SpyBot, AdAware, SpySweeper, BPS, HijackThis,
CWShredder, etc., daily.

Yesterday I copied everything from the Maxtor ATA133 that was on the Promise
to a storage part on my WD740, the turn off the Maxtor and disabled the
Promise controller. Now I'll see what happens with that.

No, the 875 chipset is old news of course, already obsolete! :disgust: They
are using s775 now for P4's, that's the 915-925 chipset. I think I also
mentioned earlier that Asus is also no longer using Promise chips on their
boards! They are now using Silicon Image, which may tell you something. I
just set up an AN7 platform for a customer, and it has a Maxtor SATA on the
Si3112 controller, and no errors when running the WMD floppy.

I don't know what your problems were, but if you're replacing the first mobo with the same one, that's not going to make any difference as far as XP goes. What's on the HD's and XP is going to think it's the exact same mobo...if the model # is the same of course. Be sure your BIOS settings are the same so XP won't get corrupt. I've moved a single non-RAID WD360 from one controller to another with no problem, but that may be different in RAID. To be safe; on the new mobo just hook everything back up & setup the way it was on the old mobo, then backup, then move the HD's to another controller if you want, then start over. Rev. # isn't going to matter.

Read my post above (or below depending on how you view threads) on the Promise controller Vs. ICH5. I've haven't used RAID on this mobo yet, so I can't help with RAID specifics. But, I'd do like I suggested above.

Activating XP is simple, just go the activate via internet method, it only takes a few seconds. If the 10 days left has passed, then you unfortunately may have to call M$. Unless of course you reformat then you should have 30 days again.

Clint, Thanks very much again for your reply. I received my replacement board yesterday and just finished the installation. Everything went as you said it would so I was able to retreive my data and back up my files. I did a partial backup today using the backup program in XP but I wasn't sure how much I wanted to backup and carry over to a clean install on the intel controller. I didn't back up any of the windows folder. The system does not seem as stable as it was when I had it running with the old motherboard. It seems to take longer to open files and sometimes the mouse hesitates. I am locking up when running programs I know that I have run troble free before. I suspect that I did not have the setup exactly the same as when I removed the board and I have corrupted windows. It's better I just start over. I did run WMD on the system again and as you said it has a thousand errors on bank one even with the new MoBo. I talked to ASUS help and they said they didn't have any knowledge of the problem. I find that difficult to believe but there wasn't anything to be gained by pursuing it further with them. I'd thought I'd do this follow-up post to keep you informed and express mt graditude for you help. You and Dave R are the only persons to respond to my request for help even though I've posted on several forums. I do appreciate that. Best Regards, John
