Stagnation today... Mostly.

Hope it stays quiet for the next week, markets closed 1 or 2 days next week, I don't feel like pulling everything out. No indications of a major pullback immediately.

The lord works in mysterious ways though... Tsunami just after Christmas a few years back, Middle East shit last year same time, Japan a bit later - pretty messy for stocks. Go Jesus?

In at 112,000 or so, out at 114,250.

Not sure if I'll keep Apple through earnings, we shall see how nervous I get.

No what is the spread between bid and offer of the shares in a retail account.

It's somewhere around $40-$50 direct from the exchange if you route the order to the floor. I was wondering what retail charges to make the trade as spreads are about a penny on the B shares direct from the exchange so about 1/3 the cost to execute. Also the volume is generally better so you can count on execution. Just wondering the rationale on the A shares.

Honestly, because I can. There's usually enough movement in the a stock so I can make a few $ while I park my $ there.

eTrade just charges the flat fee, have only recently been able to trade a online easily. Earlier this year, I had to call in an order on the A and couldn't execute the trades online.

I would attempt to rethink this.

The flat fee is irrelevant in that you still pay the bid/offer to the specialist as the A shares 90% or so of the time can't be internally crossed.

In the end all that matters is profit, not if you paid more for A's...a lot of people could buy lots of a shares but choose b. Look at $valtrd between a and b on a daily basis.

Will do, thanks, had forgotten about how a was tied to b and revalued at the end of the day...

Let's leave the lord out of the thread. Politics alone is enough of a curveball into my stock market crystal ball.

Dead day. I'm writing it off. I'm 60% cash and about 35% of that is in the TSX (Canada) and they're closed today to make up Boxing Day. May be 95% cash by week end. Maybe not.

Hmmm... something about Iran stirring shit in the Gulf. IIRC, naval exercises that will fuxxorz/threaten Mid-East oil supplies. Think I will hold onto SU (oil sands) for a bit in case speculators rape the price of crude again.

Anyone notice SBUX has been on a 2 year tear now?

Yep. I still won't touch it because I treat it the same way as I treat LULU, NFLX, AAPL, POT: these are all on multi-year tears. Some are probably more reasonably valued than the rest (*cough* LULU), but at some point, gravity returns. This kind of thinking will probably screw me as I could be missing a bigger rally though. AAPL I wouldn't mind, or haven't minded actually, playing with though.

SBUX trailing P/E = 28 and it peaked around $40 in 2008 after a 6 year long tear before falling to $10 in 2008... Too late in the game for me to play comfortably.

Shitezen. Oil sands down today, chart looks like the end of this week long rally. May liquidate majority at end of the day but keep a small, insignificant position for longer term prospects.

Okay, 100% cash again. Made a bit over 2% in just under 2 weeks.

Come on crashy crashy...

SBUX:

My thoughts .... overvalued big time.

Bascially, it has a wonderful balance sheet. Long term debt is half of FCF. Total liabilities are 3x FCF. That's just awesome. Current assets are greater than total liabilities whcih is nice to see. But there is no reason to pay a premium that I am aware of. 30 times FCF makes no sense unless this thing is going to grow FCF by 20% for the next 10 years and that is just a guess. International growth promises growth I suppose but that much growth?

I should read the annual reports but no matter what it says, I am not paying 30x FCF.

Worst year since the late 90's, and 2nd losing one...-2.2% the past 12 months.

Attributed to an antiquated daytrading approach and 'traders baggage'. Somehow this year I developed a fear of losing money.

Looking forward to 2012 with a newly improved system and refreshed perspective.

If that's legit you should quit your job and day trade permenantly. 68% return in one year would beat bernie madoff in returns. I was even for the year, plus 3% if including dividends.

Bastard... :)

Some time around March, I was up 10%. Some time around August/September, I was down 10-15%. I managed to finish the year up 1.1%, which isn't that bad considering I doubled the my principal amount. S&P 500 essentially broke even, so I beat that. DOW is up 5.6% though... Yippi ki yay?

Hoping for a good year. I only started trading October 2010, so I'd like to think I've gotten more disciplined.

Up smallish 4-5% or so however I will put my vol up against anyone's. :) It should come in insanely low this year <=4% annualized.

It's real, I've been trading long enough to realize it was a fluke though...

I barely made more from my job than I did trading.

I usually have about 20 min after the bell before I have to go to work, set up a trade on momentum, put in a limit and it usually executes while I'm working, my goal is only a couple of % per trade... Did about 150 trades last year, most of it was picking the high and lows of Apple.

Pliable,

Good job!

I don't know what my return was. Skimming through statements it looks like I made a few percent including dividends. The way Ameritrade accounts for options that I currently have probably brings my return up to 5%+ anyway. I don't track it as good as I should. Perhaps I should make it my new years resolution.

made money in what I invested by myself but lost a lot more from the managed mutual funds.
