NJ plays a rather boring style of hockey. That might have something to do with it.
NJ plays great hockey, and I hate them as a fan of a rival team. Other than Brodeur, the team doesn't have any true stars, so everything they win, they've done by grinding. It's a different brand of hockey, but if I'm not watching the Flyers, there are few teams I'd want to watch more than NJ. Maybe the Caps and Wings.
The NHL is going down the toilet fast, and a big contributing factor is the inconsistent officiating, the amount of dives that some of the primadonna players get away with (especially the Europeans), phantom calls when those aforementioned types of players get sneezed on, etc. Philly, Washington, Detroit, and NJ still play real hockey. Beyond that, I could give a shit, but I rant...
Former greats like Stevens, Hatcher, etc on the blue line are what the league needs. Not more "puck moving" defensemen and forwards that don't want to grind it out. I'd rather see a guy like Knuble dig one out in the paint and put it in the net than a Crosby or even a Jeff Carter glide around and eventually lose the puck, fall, and somehow draw a hooking call that never happened.
I'm not saying I want a return to the clutch and grab and the neutral zone trap, but right now you can't even go near certain players without getting called for something. NJ-PHI will be better hockey than PIT-OTT and BUF-BOS, but few will see it.
Ah well, as a whole, only a few (relatively) will even watch the NHL anymore, so the argument is probably moot.
