Only an idiot would continue to call me when I don't answer my phone. I'm training you. You will either learn to send the infomation to me in email, or you will waste productivity calling a phone that never answers. Your decision.

I'm absolutely not a needy person and I'm not sure how you made that leap when all I meant is people who like to control others are selfish. You took exception so clearly you fit the bill. I rarely call people on my phone and when I do it is important so they answer. I do the same. Most of my calls are less than 1 minute and the majority of those are less than 30 seconds.

I did not mean you in specific. I am talking about people who feel that it is my obligation to answer my phone so they can 'chat' with me. If I want to chat I'll answer, if not I won't. If the person can't handle that, then they are needy and not someone I'm likely to remain friends with.

EDIT: pruned out of control quotes!

Is that really what you meant to say? Email is better and faster at resolving issues than a phone call?

Absolutely! What are you going to get from me in person that could not have been put in an email?
Most of the time on the phone is spent in pointless small talk. The odds of there being a bad misunderstanding increases drastically when dealing with voice. There is only a few things that are not done better over email, and those are done better face 2 face then voice.

That is exactly what I'm trying to tell you, the sooner you understand it the better.
I'm not at work to be your friend. I'm here to get work done.

As for personal friends and family I look on CID to decide if I want to talk to them right now or not. If not I let it go and call them back when I feel like it. Don't like it? Too bad. I probably don't want a needy person like you as a friend anyway.

I agree. I rarely answer my phone unless it's my SO, boss, his boss, an owner of the company, or I'm expecting a call from you. Otherwise it ends up being a colossal waste of my time.

....granted, this is for a work phone. If I didn't have to carry a cellphone for work I wouldn't have a cell. Actually, scratch that - I'd have one, but I wouldn't give out the number.

That's pretty stupid, and you should stop associating with him. That, or leave all your messages as a series of one-word voicemails. Read him the Gettysburg Address that way. That way he has to sit around and listen to:

"First message, from phone number two-zero-six-five-two-two-three-five-four-zero, recieved Thursday, January twenty-two at Three-twenty-two PM. 'Four'"

"Next message, from phone number two-zero-six-five-two-two-three-five-four-zero, recieved Thursday, January twenty-two at Three-twenty-two PM. 'Score'"

"Next message, from phone number two-zero-six-five-two-two-three-five-four-zero, recieved Thursday, January twenty-two at Three-twenty-two PM. 'And'"

"Next message, from phone number two-zero-six-five-two-two-three-five-four-zero, recieved Thursday, January twenty-two at Three-twenty-two PM. 'Seven'"

"Next message, from phone number two-zero-six-five-two-two-three-five-four-zero, recieved Thursday, January twenty-two at Three-twenty-three PM. 'Years'"

Yesterday, he called me back almost as my hand was leaving the phone from calling him. I finally asked him about it.

He said that he never answers the phone. He always lets it go to voicemail, even if the callerID shows him it is someone he would be willing to talk to. (He gave some excuses for why he does this, but, to me, they did not make a lot of sense and I just think it is some habit that has no real basis.)

So I confirmed with him - he never answers the phone. If he ever speaks with someone on the phone, it is because he called them initially or called them back.

So I asked him, "What happens if someone else did exactly the same thing - How do you ever speak to each other on the phone?"

Maybe he's doing the bill collector boogie. Does he have good credit? Many people don't answer the phone, epecially if it's a number they don't recognize.

what's worse are those assholes who reply to your voicemail with another voicemail that you can send without calling the person back.

lol your first point is actually pretty good. I like that  If that's how you roll and people keep calling you, I suppose that makes them the idiot.

Regarding your second point, I see what you mean now. Makes sense. I do that pretty rarely - usually if I am about to sit down for dinner. For the most part I always answer my phone.

Meh, I almost always let the home phone go to the machine. If I wanted to talk to someone, I would call them.
The cell is a business line so I see who's calling and answer if necessary.

😕 If everyone thought like that, no one would ever talk to anyone on the phone.

Stop answering his calls.

That is not really a feasible option for me.

MotionMan

Why not? It is apparently feasible for him.

Because my work requires me to obtain information from him from time to time. I cannot fire him and I cannot bypass him.

Sux to be me.

My phone is exists so that I can call whoever I want, not so anyone who wants to can call me.

Edit: Since the phone company insists on allowing anyone who acquires a certain 10 digit number to cause my phone to ring, I check the ID and quite often ignore it. People just call you up for such stupid things.

"I was just thinking of you".

"How you doing"?

"Are you busy? Cuz I need..."

I am incapable of having a conversation on a cell phone save the calls that last for less than a minute, "I'm on my way" etc. I get way too distracted to effectively talk on the cell phone, texts and face to face ftw, fuck the calls, I only used 21 minutes last month, lol.

Mostly different ways to say: Interrupting him while working.

This post is full of win, and exactly what I would do to any self-important a-hole who refused to answer ANY call. Why have a phone? So you can call people when YOU need to because YOUR time is so much more valuable than mine?

Or just stop leaving voice mails? When someone asks why something isn't done, throw him under a bus ("I called SoAndSo multiple times but wasn't able to reach him")
