I agree but $600 for 4K Gaming is H*)) of a lot cheaper then a nVidia GeForce OC'd GTX 780.

Thing is you need 3-4x Titans to play games at 4K. I am not sure I follow your statement that R9 290X "for 4K Gaming" is a better value than 780 OC since both of those cards will be a slide-show. Correct me if I am wrong but $3,500 for a 4K monitor is not exactly cheap either. I think 4K is not going to be relevant for another 3-5 years. GPUs are too slow and monitors are too expensive to care. As we get next gen games too, the demands on the GPU will increase and that's before jumping to 4K.

4k gaming? Sheesh in some games we can barely get 60fps in 1080p. Lets not get ahead of ourselves here. We are a couple of generations away from 4k gaming imo. At least 3, but most likely more years.

And not every game needs to be maxxed out either. Check ARMA3.
Please lets not create yet another false meme that a 290x is needed for 4K gaming, which is easily several gens away for acceptable single card 4K gaming. Not to mention 4K monitor adoption rate.
Because that would be easily seen through BS.

'Slightly faster than 780 GTX'? I will sit this one out as a 7970 owner.

Mantle and Enhanced Audio does sound promising though....

Please forgive me if I am missing something here...TDP of the new 290x is 300w, Titan is 250w.

This thing look's just like a OC'd 7970 with maybe 10% more power? I think a highly-clocked 7970 would just be a better deal, unless these new cards clock to the moon...

AMD needs to price it cheaper. This is getting stupid. I'll just hold onto my 7970 if it turns out to be $600.

So basically this whole release boils down to 1 new part at GTX 780 levels/prices, the rest just being the same old at the same prices :(

Yep. Color me disappointed. I understand that the recent AMD tech day was much much more than just releasing new cards but this news is just disappointing. Looks like we have to wait for 20nm for any type of large bump in performance.

@Akugami

If its even just a little bit faster than a 780, that means its right there in GTX Titan territory with reguards to performance.

The stock titan has like 5-10% performance on a stock 780.
In short I bet for DX11 it ll likely be 290x = GTX titan performance.

Saying "our new card is as fast as the titan", doesnt do much for AMD though.
So theyre trying to differentiate themselfs, with stuff like trueaudio.

Also with mantle used its suppoed to ridicule the titan in BF4.
If alot of games go this way, we could see the 290x beating the Titan in alot of upcomeing titles in the near future.

I don't think AMD has released TDP specs. What most sites are doing, apparently, is seeing that it has a 6+8 pin connector which provides 300W and then "deduce" that the TDP is 300W. TDP of course is not equal to power consumption.

put on headphones, watch this youtube video (in 720p) (close eyes and listen):

Again, that can be done with any audio. Its called ASMR, youtube it. Its been around for ages. You can do it in software if you want. The reason devs don't use it is because its not worth it from a gaming standpoint, you can do the things with custom game engines.

Depending on how many game developers jump onboard.

Mantle would be dependent on a very specific architecture for the tweaks to work, possibly hampering AMD from necessary redesigns on later chips. "Eternal" is not the word I would use.

Mantle requires GCN to work currently. I'd tend to believe future compatability is part of the design. Nothing saying otherwise. Fixed console hardware is most likely the baseline configuration. Would be a silly move otherwise.

think he said it best:

So EA confirmed, all Frostbite games.

Activision "will have to support Mantle".

What did I say about dominos falling? That's the big 2 down already.

There will be games takeing advantage of this mantle stuff.
Activision and EA arnt small potatoes in the gameing industry, and these are just the ones we know of so far.

There could be intire swarms of other developers out there too, planning on doing it/actively doing it atm.

Looked like it suffered from hitching? now and again but overall looked pretty smooth. They seemed pretty excited about it tho.

In the Anand article 2 titans got 100 fps in a single 4K.

Of course there is no way of knowing the video settings for that eyefinity run.

TDP of course is not equal to power consumption.

This needs to be stickied on our forum.

TDP does not necessarily equate to real world power consumption. In some cases it may as a pure coincidence. In others, real world power usage may be higher or lower.

GTX480 has a 250W TDP but peaked at 272W in Crysis 2.

vs.

GTX780 has a 250W TDP but peaked at 222W in Crysis 2.

I called it several days ago.

This is exactly like AMD and 7990. They released this GPU after a year after Nvidia had the entire market alone with GTX 690.

Now AMD comes dragging after with a new GPU that will match GTX 780, which Nvidia have been cashing in for many months now.

AMD need to get their strategies right. Because Nvidia is a few steps ahead all the time.
