OC'd MSI 7970 now on Egg

I was studying for a moment trying to see why this wasn't just a reference model and then noted the core clock: 1010MHz

Not sure that $40-$50 premium is really work it though... but I suppose if you want a modest guaranteed overclock then this might be the card for you.

Also, looks like a custom PCB (no AMD logo), so size may be slightly different.


I hope this means we're going to see more customs coming in the next days/week.

Actually based on NEBusiness, it looks like they have quite a few cards currently in stock.

20+ on Sapphire, MSI, and MSI-OC.

5870s were around $200-$250 when I got my 470s for $150. For some reason the 5870s head their value better probably because the 6970 wasn't terribly faster.

Yea, because 5870's don't still sell on the used market for $200+? Or because 6970's aren't still priced around $350 new/$250-300 used? Example number 9000 of the desperation around here.

They held their value so long because it still stomped the competition from both NV and the 69xx series at equal and lower price points.

MSI card does not appear to be the Lightning model.

Wouldn't be surprised to see one of these companies throw out a $750 priced super edition just to see who bites. Heck why not? They seem to enjoy throwing money at amd for some reason.

I think a lot of people just don't want to wait on Nvidia again. Seems every time I want to upgrade, Nvidia is 4-5 months behind.

Not sure what they've done with the cooler except make it look cheaper than the reference one by adding a different shroud. Perhaps they have re-worked it a bit underneath.

I really don't get the comments about it not being worth it. It's only $50 more for a guaranteed factory overclock, and probably a top binned gpu from one of the few AMD AIB's with a decent warranty.

I know that the launch hype suggests that a 1125/1575 OC is simply a matter of moving the sliders to the right in CCC, but it you actually read OC results threads you'll see that some people are scaling back their clocks and/or having to tinker with voltages to get these kinds of OC's out of their cards. The most successful OCers are also running more aggressive (and loud) fan profiles. IMO the review sites all got cherry picked cards that OC well and easily, but aren't necessarily representative of what most people who bought them actually received. Don't get me wrong, it's a great card even at sock, but getting a guaranteed overclock is still worth something IMO.

As far as stock of 7970s goes in general, they are pretty much in stock at most of the major etailers. If you live in the US and want a 7970 availability shouldn't be an issue. They can even be had for MSRP or $10-20 over MSRP. Give it a few weeks and they'll probably start throwing in a free game.

Some cards have different stock voltage than others. That's why some have to move volts up a notch. The reference cooling is loud anyway.

GTX 580 had a few versions @ $600 sometime back. It's common from AIB's to charge more for oced cards or cards with more memory.

Unlikely though as the 7990 is supposed to come in March with an MSRP of $850.

You clearly did not see the prices of the 4GB 5970s from Sapphire or the 5870 x2 card from Asus. All of them were over $1000. Then there was the MSRP of the 5970 that we did not see again for over a year.

HD 6990s still have inflated prices as well because they keep selling.

The only thing new here is that AMD is pricing directly to put needed funds in their pocket instead of letting the etailers jack up the rates & pocket the difference.

You think if nV releases a faster single gpu than a 7970 they won't price it higher?

It's not good for us but a high end card is going to command a premium because there ARE people willing to buy that performance.
