maybe if parents and teachers did anything to stop bullying, kids wouldnt kill themselves

maybe if kids who got bullied on the internet stayed off facebook, they wouldn't kill themselves

maybe if idiot kids weren't retarded enough to kill themselves, they wouldn't kill themselves.

quit whining how gay people are harrassed and come up with a reasonable way to fix the problem

True, that was the norm and may still be the norm. I agree I also heard mostly about older teens when I was growing up. Most of the were in and around my community. I am sure there has always been outliers to the norm. The only difference is now that the media is actively seeking out child suicides. I am sure there has been more in recent weeks that we haven't heard about, but they didn't fit the image that the media wanted.

Also, the 10 year old child is found and boom its automatically assumed that she was a victim of bullying without presenting any supporting evidence. Maybe she was a victim of molestation. Maybe she got the idea from a movie and wanted to replicate it for whatever reason. She could've been murdered by her mother who found her.

Another sad thing about the media. If it was in fact bullying we will hear the whole story. If it was something like the other possibilities I mentioned the story will evaporate.

You still haven't qualified your age, also now you are changing the subject.

10 year olds and younger teens have not historically killed themselves regardless of issues.

For whatever its worth, I am 30.

How do you know if 10 year olds and younger teens have not historically killed themselves? Where are these statistics you keep talking about? I am sure that it has been going on for ages. Just because a few isolated incidents have been found does not mean that this is the new norm.

Well considering most couldn't tell you the latest breaking news for the day or even identify what states make up the US...I can understand.

Mortality, deaths, and the data you are looking for is easily available though. I am not sure what you are asking. Have you been to even a basic library?

I know in college during a suicide segment I was able to go and get all this by age. It also showed natural death and reasons for other causes.

Suicide in later teens was a bit of a spike and then around middle age and finally around retirement (IIRC, I was just getting out of college a second time at 30...nearly 10 years ago)

EDIT:
Actually it's even easier now...although I didn't drill down....google "suicide by age"

first hit http://www.nimh.nih.gov/health/publications/suicide-in-the-us-statistics-and-prevention/index.shtml

Those references will list out suicide by age, ethnic background, and a ton of other demographics.

Deaths are something VERY documented in the US.

Re: Facebook/Online: This moves Bullying to a new level. Used to be you'd get Bullied at school, but when away from school one would be fine and unBullied. Now it seems to be a 24/7 kinda thing and that's bound to mess with kids minds.

what i don't get about the facebook argument is: don't you have to "friend" the bully to get bullied by them in the first place?

Ok, your statistics show figures for 10-14 year olds. A small demographic, but it does happen.

I am aware that deaths are very well documented. You kept referring to statistics saying that young children don't commit suicide. I wanted to see how the stats backed up your claim. Obviously they don't. lol

no.

you can be a friend of a friend then get on the targets facebook and leave message's.

avoidance is not the answer. to tell kids just get off the internet is not going to do it.

Not really. Much of this kind of bullying isn't really one-on-one anyway. It's teasing, public embarrassment and exploiting the kid's weaknesses. Like exploiting something they're ashamed of or have otherwise have issues about (outing a gay kid to his fundie family, or calling an anorexic girl fat).

That's why the kid can't escape. They show up to school only to be horrified that someone has created a "hate page" for them with postings of embarrassing pictures or whatever...and everyone is in on it or knows about it.

...or, to illustrate obvious recent events, they find out that their sexual act was streamed to anyone who cared to watch and possibly outed to people they didn't want to know...

I remember in my HS, an unattractive and unpopular girl was nominated and won homecoming queen, due to a coordinated effort from the popular girls, specifically as a prank to embarrass her publicly. This was in 1995, before it was so easy to coordinate/communicate privately online.

How come these kids just aren't fighting back? Why are they allowing what someone else they don't even like says about them matter? Why the fuck are we raising such goddamn pussies now a days? All the bullying shit I'm reading about, I would of beat the living shit out of assholes like that if they were at my school. Fuck douche bags who want nothing more but to be douche bags.

You really are the second most stupid person on this forum.

I'll take that as a compliment I guess

why the fuck are young kids killing themselves? how the fuck is that even an option for them? at that age I was worrying about the girls I had crushes on, hanging out with friends, etc. and I'm only 23, I'm not talking about 30 years ago or something. you don't think the MAIN problem is that the kids are killing themselves? isn't that the issue here? bullies will be bullies. you can try to stop them but it will always be an issue. of course we should try to stop it, but jesus christ, if you get bullied, you'll get through it, suicide is not the solution...I think that is clearly the biggest problem.

go fuck your boyfriend

I'm not a small person and I'm pretty laid back so I didn't really get any bullying done on me, but it did happen on occasion and I made damn sure not a single fucker would try that shit again. Words? I don't care, you're a fucking idiot if all you do is run your mouth. If they tried to get physical I'd make damn sure that they knew how poor of a decision they were making before they did it because I wouldn't stop until I got my retribution.

honestly i believe things like no-tolerance policies on fighting do nothing but empower bullying.

Why do they even fucking give a shit what these stupid fucks say about them?

I don't get this online bullying thing. If you're getting abused online, why don't you avoid the places where its happening? block your facebook profile from those who bully you. I won't go as far as saying don't use facebook, because god forbid someone doesn't have the right to use it, but holy shit, if you're gonna kill yourself over it, get off the website! or don't be in contact with those who bully you, its friggin simple. join a message board if you want the interaction, idk.

in school, if the abuse is that bad, an adult should be stepping in.

but we're talking about suicide! its not a normal thing to do...

Wow, you're so awesome. Do you look in the mirror and beat off to yourself?

Physical bullying is different. You have an obvious antagonist you can address (assuming you have the physicality to do so). But anonymous online bullying, flyers spread around campus, mob mentality and teasing, whatever...it really affects some kids. Not all kids have the capacity to just ignore it, nor are all pranks or teasing insignificant enough to be ignored. Also, clearly you're not the type who would have been a target..it's the fragile kids who are usually bullied in the first place.

I dont understand this concept of facebook bullying, couldn't you just delete your account and not have to read what everyone else thinks about you? I just don't think people can deal with reality anymore, everyone has gone insane.

Not to mention you have to accept people as friends. People need to stop giving a fuck what others say or think about them. The only people I care about are those that care for me. Everyone else is just a random body as far as I'm concerned.
