I never understood why someone would by a horse. There are horses EVERYWHERE in the game. If I want a horse, I just take one! :p

Almost tempting to enchant some basic clothes so once I've cleaned out a dungeon I can take all the loot.

i started playing Oblivion on Day 1 and was the first player to report logging over 1,000 hours [with the vanilla game] on the official TES forum. Over 1,250 hours in all with the expansions and mods

now i can't stand to play it
:Q

Wow, thats insane. I've been playing the game on and off since August and I've only gotten about 200 hours with 2 characters and a whole load of mods. I can't imagine how you wouldn't get bored without any mods after playing for that long. I installed a whole load of mods practically 5 hours into the game. In any case, you must have memorized Cyrodill in and out.

In fact, I've probably gotten only about 1200 hours over every single moment in my life spent gaming.

LOL :D

8 mil in gold! 1250 hours! that's mindboggling, apoppin. My 8200 gold & 35 hrs is paltry in comparison! lol

Evil, have you tweaked the .ini for dual core, cache size, etc? Turn off Antivirus? Maybe run a defrag? Yeah, it's frustrating that you can completely max out games like HL2 & Ep, but still get stutter with this one.

Thanks for the tips. Hopefully my level 22 Redguard will get accepted to the Arcane U quickly..heh ;) I'm going to finish vanilla Oblivion first, then maybe try Francesco's mod or OOO (unless I get bored...)

well, it was a particularly strange time in my life .. at one time i needed to stay 'up' mostly for 5 days straight while wildfires raged [quite literally] in my "backyard" and and the *same time* i was caring for a deathly sick family member we couldn't evacuate.
.. and Oblivion is the only game - except Hg:L that i put well over 100 hours into .. i actually "finished" Oblivion
[there were several unique 'discoveries' Max and i reported to the TES forum - so it was a hell of a "distraction"]

Ok, i'm curious. What are some of these unique discoveries? ... I guess don't post them in here because of spoiler, or if you do make sure you tag them. I'm curious if these are things I've discovered at all.

I still think the neatest discovery is the Specral Mudcrab. I fully admit that I did not find that on my own.

I think the most I ever logged in the game was a little over 100 hours and about 200,000 in gold. I mostly stopped bothering with money at that point though as it's kinda useless past a certain amount.

Now I'm playing my low level challenge where I played through some side questing and the main story at level 1 until I had to level (you have to be level two to get a Daedric artifact which is necessary eventually). Now I'm level two and I'm gonna try to beat all remaining side quests and the main story without leveling again. The only things I can't do that I know of are the daedric shrine quests.

I had about 25k gold at 50 hours, and now I have about 250,000 at just under 100 hours.
Once you get higher levels, assuming you're using vanilla Oblivion you get lots of glass/daedric etc drops in dungeons which are worth bucketloads of gold and your money soon starts to shoot up.

one discovery we made was 6 months after the game was out - Quake Ruin
--that is not a spoiler .. try to find it without any hints :p
- i looked in the long dev list of "names" in the toolset for it and we went searching - it is well-hidden and not really all that special - even if it is totally unique and a bit "trippy"

i was one of very first to simultaneously discover 'Chameleon' as a "cheat"
and how to cheat [legally] to buff your character while *i* slept

we measured the height of White Tower [in feet] and the tallest point from sea level .. pretty small .. and your char is 5 feet or so "tall" .. so it's a matter of "perspective" and illusion ... the world is pretty small at max speed

and i was first to start the thread that shows [in one of the rare flame-fests at TES forums :p] - for PC only - that Wabbajack is an unbeatable weapon that *always* will defeat a Superior Enemy - to 50 levels over your own character's

howz that for what i remember off the top of my head?

oh yeah, the Devs emailed for a couple of my "save games" for a major MQ-breaking issue and showed me the console "workaround" to restore it

At the forum we tore the game mechanics apart and i demonstrated Jail [shortcut] to "cheat" legally ... i felt i got to "know" Oblivion's Creator .. it is the only game that felt "worth it" to me. My username is the same on TES forum.

i had a blast with it

Pretty cool. Will keep a lookout for Quake Ruin & the wabbajack.

Yeah Lonyo, sticking w/ vanilla for now. I've been dropping a lot of wampum on training and specialty magic weapons. Gonna hold out for the Daedric quests & do some more dungeon crawling. Cripes, there's too much to do in this game!

I've been wondering....why the heck do ATI cards run Oblivion better? After seeing the latest benches (9800x2 Quad article), getting a 3870x2 seems like a pretty good investment for someone on Oblivi-crack...lol

As far as Radeons, you have to know the history at Bethsoft; the Xbox360 version was developed in parallel, and the MS tools for Xbox360 worked best on Radeons, because the Xbox360 itself uses Radeon video chips, so that was the only VGA hardware even considered for TES: IV development. I really doubt that there ever was one iota of play-testing on any Geforce gear at all, else nVIDIA couldn't have gotten by with their attempted sabotage.

Bethesda was sending ATI and nVIDIA beta versions 3-4 months before the game's release, and both companies put up web pages saying what hardware they sold would run the game. Bethesda's marketing people took the assurances from nVIDIA as truth, although they managed to screw up ATI's response (added the 9600s, which ATI had left off). The official requirements were never changed when the truth came out. Instead, Bethesda created an "Extra Low" (very ugly) setting just for the junker Geforce trash, like the FXes, and 6200s.

None of the game's patches have included anything special to reduce the BIAS that favors Radeons by anywhere from 20 % (lower end) to 40 % (top end), and if anything, each succeeding nVIDIA driver set has been worse for Oblivion since its release, so that's been nVIDIA's bad attitude continuing.

Getting back to horses for a moment, although the horse from the Priory is slow, it seems singularly immune to major injury or death . .

Now I felt I should have kept the wabbajack. I did the quest and and got the item, but found it to be sort of useless, and just ended up selling it to a weapon shop.

If Quake Ruin is what's in the Oblivion realm, then I think I managed to go across it at some point early in the game.

I found a very interesting cave a couple months ago, Lost Boy Cavern I think it was called. It seemed like an unfinished quest that was never fully put into the game.

I would assume that you are probably sick of Oblivion at this point, but have you ever thought of going back to play through the various new mods? For example, right now I'm playing Silgrad Tower which allows you to travel around the province of Morrowind, and adds bunch of new locations, npcs, and items.

To be honest, I thought Oblivion felt unfinished when I first got it, but the mod community has done a really excellent job with the game.

Are there any other sandbox RPGs like this? HG: L seemed more like Diablo then an open world game. Bethesda is working on Fallout 3, which is open ended but not nearly much as Oblivion.

Also, I found this mod called multites4 which apparantely allows for coop play in oblivion. Seems to be in alpha stage right now. It would be tons of
fun to go romping around cyrodill with a friend though. :p

Well, this is certainly troubling. If I had know this earlier, it probably would've influenced my decision as to what card to get. Tks for the info.

That is not true at this point. The reason Ati cards at that time pulled ahead was due to their much better shader performance over the Nvidia 7 series. Oblivion was a very shader heavy game. This is not true so much anymore since Nvidia cards have caught up with Ati in that respect.

Your card right now is far better than any gpu that Ati offers, excluding multi-gpu configurations which have other problems of their own. You can see clearly in this review that it beats any gpu that Ati offers in Oblivion.

I managed to kill off that horse rather quickly. I always get white horses now, because black ones die too easily.

Weight 0.1, value 10,000. Both found in random caves/fort dungeons.

Nice..what level are you at?

I had a bizarre crash the other night..I was in the chapel in Skiringard, then prayed to the altar to get healing, and next the game hard locked with a pink screen. Was forced to do a hard reset. Anyone else experience a "pink screen of death"?

Yeesh. Spot the ATI fanboy in this rant.

If a major game developer were to truly not spend "one iota of play-testing on any Geforce gear at all", they'd be out of business pretty fast considering the dominance nVidia has in performance game parts. (Fanboys not included.)

Of course, this FUD rant ignores the inconvenient truth that Oblivion runs fine, if not better, on the PS3 and who makes the PS3's GPU? What's that? Cat got your tongue? Let me help: nVidia!!! I guess Bethesda may have tested on some nVidia stuff after all.

Fanboys only pwn themselves.

Never had a hardlock, just random crashes to desktop every now and then.

Yeah, I've had one, maybe two random crashes, but this one was pretty f-ed up. Gonna try the 174.74 beta drivers tonight.

Has anyone installed the unofficial patch that supposedly fixes over 1100 (!!!) bugs in the existing official patch?
