So I caved in and bought it yesterday, and started my new guy. I quit playing the original after my hdd wiped and I lost my original guy, but hopefully the expansion adds some fun stuff.

My question for the people starting new guys, are you just going to go straight to the new content after you get out of the sewers or do other thngs 1st?

Has anyone had any issues with their pre-existing mods after installing the expansion? I installed it yesterday but haven't had a chance to play it yet.

reinstalled oblivion after getting this expansion and started a new character from scratch... i got a new video card since the last time i played (x800xl -> x1900xtx), so the eye candy is mighty impressive (going from no HDR to HDR is unbelievable). despite that, repeating those quests again (after spending >> 100 hrs in the game the first time around) is not too enticing.

fortunately, the new quest does indeed appear - in the form of a portal on a random island - not too long after exiting the sewers... however, i tried to go into it and was told I couldn't - maybe I need to level up a few times first?

edit --> forgot to mention that all the mods I used before (better textures, normal map fix, better water, saddlebags, etc) seem to work fine...

Damn Stalker. Haven't finished with it yet, and just blew way too much money on a monitor. Still, I'll probably pick it up within a few weeks. Definately starting over for it. Also, have to pick up Knights of the Nine at the same time too like I did with Morrowind (got Tribunal and Bloodmoon same day:)). Maybe I'll try looking for some mods too. Only thing I ever installed was Saddlebags...

Oh ya, forgot to add. Heard something about the Oblviion Dev. team moving on to Fallout 3 or something. So whether or not there will be more expansions is questionable.

I think that was mentioned in an interview with a lead developer. When asked if/when they'll begin working on the next Elder Scrolls title, the dev said that their next task was Fallout 3, so it wouldn't begin quite yet. Not sure if he implied anything about another expansion.

why would they *not* milk a very fat cash cow?
:confused:

i expect to see another expansion for Oblivion ... because it is so easy to do in comparison with a whole new game ... i bet they can just use 1/10their resources to finish it up quickly

what about TES V ?

looks like a *bad bug* in S.I. --watch for an official patch

if you play more than 50-120 hours you have it :p

http://www.uesp.net/wiki/Shivering:Reference_Bug

read it ... there are fixes if you have problems now

A very serious bug has been found with Shivering Isles that will render the game unplayable in many ways after about 50 to 120 hours of play (better FPS means bug hits earlier). The bug will occur regardless of whether you access SI content or not. The basis of bug is that an internal "space" of identification numbers for objects created in the game (e.g., a dropped arrow, a new creature, etc.) becomes exhausted -- at which point the newly created objects disappear from the game world. It is not known whether this affects Xbox users as well (it is reasonable to assume that it would, but might not hit until around 150 hours of play assuming 30 FPS on Xbox).
.....
Early Diagnosis

If you have SI, you have the bug. The more relevant question is, how far has it progressed?

PC Note For PCs, you can see how far along your are by dropping an arrow or ingredient from your inventory, then entering the console and clicking on the object. The object's formid will display at the top of the screen, like so: "Iron Arrow" FF6cb394. Be sure that the name appears! If it doesn't you've probably just clicked on the ground or some other object -- try clicking in a different place, and you'll get worried for the wrong reason.

The formid number should begin with FF -- that's the modindex, it means the object belongs to the savegame. The following 6 (hex) digits are the objectindex. Ordinarily, this number increases whenever Oblivion needs to create a new "in world" object -- e.g., because you shoot an arrow, drop some item, or a creature is spawned. However, for some reason SI seems to be generated 1-2 of these per frame. When the number hits FFF,FFF, it tries to roll over, but instead the whole number (modindex+objectindex) rolls over, resulting in newly created objects with modindex "00" (instead of FF).
...

Avoidance

Don't play Shivering Isles until a patch is available. The problem is likely due to a script, which if identified, can probably be repaired. This may take a while. If the problem exists on the Xbox, then repair by Bethesda Softworks would be required.

Alternatively, you can keep playing, and take your chances on the limited gameplay. In this case, the lower the FPS on your system, the better.

Alternatively (if you have already already installed SI), you might uninstall, then reinstall from scratch without installing SI, waiting until the patch arrives to re-upgrade to SI.

Note: The DLCShiveringIsles.esp does not contain SI material, rather it is a flag to the Oblivion engine to use the associated bsa archive files. In fact, Shivering Isles content is integrated directly into Oblivion.esm when Shivering Isles is installed. Hence to go back to a game without SI installed, you have to install an earlier version of Oblivion.esm -- i.e., reinstall the game.
head's up

the fix is a mini-mod created by a user i think it stops the guards from partolling when you are not there ...

I just got Oblivion installed after it collected dust for about 8 months still in shrink wrap. I now have an 8800 to play with, so I'll begin the quest and try to catch up for the expansion:)

up for the 'fix'

*do not* run SI without it!

http://tessource.net/files/file.php?id=10278

SI is evidently badly bugged without it :(

and i started Oblivion again on Sunday in preparation for SI [also added Spell Tomes and Knights-9 which i never played] ... i really enjoyed the sewers ... believe it or not .. this time it was not just "run and survival" ... i actually got out with my hero somewhat "experienced"

and *this* time i picked a thief/mage character with major skills i will *never* use ... so i will level verrry s-l-o-w-l-y

SI looks very nice and rather different from Oblivion ... i guess when i am done with SI, i will be experienced enough for Knights of the Nine Quest

i guess you can't take your Horse and Horse armor into SI
:confused:

so far ... a bit into exploring ... and i really like it

WTF on the bug. Thought you were going to go into some fanboy 'bug' about playing too much and addiction:p.

And hey, I thought you said you've played through Knights...

Anyways, ordered both from BB on Sunday (15% sale took them down to $26 a pop, ok for SI, don't feel the same for Knights). Hope they get here by Friday; I'll have finished 2 major projects by then:).

By the way, anyone using a no level-scaling mod? If so, how well does it work and whats it called?

I hadn't had any problems while I played, haven't been on it in a couple of days - I spent maybe 25 hours in SI. I won't be playing anymore until that patch is released :eek:.

nope ... i *finished* Oblivion before Spell Tomes ... and long before Knights-9 was released ...

after 1,000 or so hours it gets a little tedious with the same character ... being Level 92 was nuts though ... especially for the modder's high-level expansions like Kumiko Manor
:Q

i just wanted to start all over ... this time i picked a mage-thief
:shocked:

and made *sure* all my 'majors' were things i would NOT use ;)

i figure i want to do SI first and then be buffed enough for the Knight's Quest.

i Finished STALKER Sunday and started Oblivion that night in preparation ... and i just went 'in' to SI yesterday ... started to explore one of the caves ... or whatever ...
seems like they tried to make it *different* than Oblivion ...

if you install SI, it doesn't matter if you don't play it and go back to Oblivion... you will get that looping bug.

i would *not* wait for the patch ... the 'fix' is a '.esp' that stops the guards routine while you are NOT there - it doesn't affect anything else ... and it is easily removed after the official patch is released simply by UN-checking it in the Data Files.

if you have played 25 hours, you already have a problem ... especially if you are getting good FPS; the faster the system, the sooner the bug manifests itself

with a *thud* ... and then you have to reinstall Oblivion and SI ... :p

and i am playing it straight--like the devs designed it [exploiting the game's mechanics to the max, of course] but with no cheating, console use, fast travel or mods --other than 'texture']

the way i play it, i will always be at a low level relative to my 'strengths' ... and enemies ;)
so far, so good

:)

Question: Will the QTP3 or LOD/texture mods have any effect in SI? If most of the textures in the expansion area are different then obviously a modder will need to redo those as well.

Even though I'm not a big fan, I might like to see how my 8800GTS handles it. Oblivion is a great benchmarking tool.

Seems like they released a 'beta' patch (official) to SI. Saw it at Firingsquad, you link it:). My package is here, got KotN and SI sitting on a shelf still in their shrink wrapped on a bookshelf. Too damn busy until Friday to even open them. Everyone cross your fingers and hope they finish the patch especially for me;).

Are you referring to a mod that removes the scaling of the world around you as you level? If so, there are a few. One of the most popular is Oscuro's Overhaul. It creates more static items/creatures in the world. i.e. some enemies will still scale, but the scaling is more like you'll run into an enemy between levels 6-10 in xyz location. It virtually gets rid of the situation where you are at level 1 and run into a highwayman demanding 100 gold, and then, 25 levels later, you run into a highwayman in daedric armor demanding the same 100 gold.

It also changes many more things about the game, including fusing in other mods as well where it makes sense. You can read all about it here. The game becomes a lot more dangerous with this mod. Once you enter that cave, you have no idea what you're going to get. It could be a level 25 vampire haven, or just some level 2 skeletons.

He is about to release the update 1.32 (in beta testing now), so I would wait a bit for that.

If I were to get rid of every other mod I had, I would make sure I kept that one. The level-scaling was the biggest sore spot for me with the game dynamics. Matching OOO with Mart's Monster Mod has been a lot of fun as well.

what is wrong with the "fix" ?

:confused:

3kb ... it does NO harm and can be easily disabled when the patch DOES come out :p

i wouldn't use *any* level-scaling mods until i get an OK from their authors ....

the texture and GUI changes mods seem ok

the Beta patch

'bout time

The Elder Scrolls IV: SHIVERING ISLES
Version 1.2.0410 Beta

This is a beta patch. We strongly recommend you backup your save games and understand it may be necessary to re-install the game when the final patch is released. Additionally, you may experience issues with this patch. Please report any issues you experience with this patch at www.elderscrolls.com/forums under Hardware and Software Issues -- specify you are running with the BETA patch.

Index:

1. Known Issues and Troubleshooting
2. Manual Errata and Addendum
3. Performance Tuning
4. System Requirements
5. Update 1.2 Beta Notes

1. Known Issues and Troubleshooting

* Uninstalling Shivering Isles
Uninstalling Shivering Isles removes many files that are required by Oblivion to play. To play Oblivion after uninstalling Shivering Isles, you must first uninstall and reinstall Oblivion to properly replace the needed files.
* Installation Issue
If you repeatedly uninstall and re-install Oblivion, certain systems will display an error message if you try to uninstall Oblivion again. To fix this, put your Oblivion disk in and run setup.exe. This will clear up the error and you can uninstall and reinstall the game.
* Saved Games
Your saved games are located in your \My Documents\My Games\Oblivion directory.
* Prior to Installing the Game
Before attempting to install Oblivion, please verify that your computer meets system requirements. We also recommend that you prepare your hard drive for installation by running ScanDisk and Disk Defragmenter prior to installation. These utilities are part of Windows® and can identify and resolve problems with your disk drive which could hinder installation and/or playing of the game. To launch these programs and optimize your hard disk drive:
1. Open "My Computer".
2. Right-click the disk drive you wish to install the game onto (usually C:).
3. Click on "Properties".
4. Select the "Tools" tab.
5. Click "Check Now" to launch Scandisk.
6. When Scandisk has completed, follow steps 1-3 and click "Defragment Now" to launch Disk Defragmenter. Note that defragmenting your disk drive can take a long time. It's a good idea to start disk defragmenter and let it run overnight.

* ATI Crossfire
Performance on systems using ATI Crossfire will be reduced until ATI releases an updated driver with Oblivion listed as a Crossfire Compatible game.
* Error messages when launching Oblivion
This will appear as a missing dll error similar to "d3dx9_27.dll not found."

This can be corrected by Exploring the Oblivion DVD. On the disk there is a folder named DXREDIST. Open the folder and run the DXSETUP.exe. This will install the version of DirectX required to run Oblivion.
* Unable to make new saves
If the Tab key is pressed while entering a name during character creation, a problem may occur when the game goes to write a save to the save location. This is because the name of the character is included in the name of the save file used in Windows. This is most commonly a result of attempting to Alt-Tab out of the application during name entry. If this occurs, autosaves and quicksaves will continue to function correctly, but saves made through the menu will not. The issue will be fixed if the Tab is deleted when renaming the character before exiting the sewer at the end of the character generation.

The following may also be of assistance if the character has progressed beyond character generation:
o The player name can be changed through the console by pressing the ` (tilde) key, and entering the following: player.SetActorFullName "Player Name" (where Player Name = the name of the character). Press RETURN, and then exit the console by pressing the tilde again.
o Also, saves can be made through the console by pressing the ` (tilde) key, and entering the following: save filename (where filename = the name of the save that you would like to make). Press RETURN, and then exit the console by pressing the tilde again.
* Input Problems
Keyboard input problems could be the result of a control peripheral. Editting the Oblivion.ini may correct this issue. The Oblivion.ini file is located in the My Documents\My Games\Oblivion directory. In the [Controls] section, change the ?bUse Joystick=1? setting to ?bUse Joystick=0? or simply disconnect the peripheral. Make sure the settings are saved. Note, changes to the Oblivion.ini file will not be saved if Oblivion in running when the changes are made.
* Frequent Crashing possibly due to old system file
Some users may experience frequent crashing due to an older system file. These crashes may be attributed to the 'mpeg2dmx.ax' file. Simply renaming the file to "mpeg2dmx.ax.old" may correct this issue.
* Frequent Crashing possibly due to connected HP printer
A program related to HP printers may cause Oblivion to crash. Before running Oblivion: Press Ctr-Alt-Del to bring up the task manager. Go to the Processes Tab. Right click on any process starting with the letters HP and select End. Running Oblivion at this point may have this issue corrected. Note: The PC will need to be restarted to reinitialize printing or imaging.
* "FF" icons in the system tray
Some users have reported having numerous "FF" icons in their taskbar during or after playing Oblivion. These icons are from a seperate video/audio decoder you may have installed in the past called "FFDShow." This program is processing the sound files for Oblivion, which some users have reported slows down the game, and can leave the icons in their system tray. Simply moving the mouse over those icons will get rid of them after you stop playing Oblivion. Uninstalling FFDShow can fix this, but it is NOT necessary. You can follow the steps below to tell FFDShow not to handle sound for Oblivion.

Instructions for disabling the FFDShow for Oblivion without fully removing it:
1. Click Start
2. Click "All Programs" (or just Programs, depending on the version of Windows, whether they're using "classic," etc.)
3. Go to the ffdshow folder.
4. Click "Audio decoder configuration."
5. In the left hand pane, click "Info & debug." This is the second entry in the list.
6. In the right hand pane, near the bottom, find a check box labelled "Don't use ffdshow in:"
7. Check that box, and in the text box underneath (it lights up when you check the check box), add "oblivion.exe" (don't include the quotes). If there is already something in that box, put a semi-colon ( ; ) after what's already there, and oblivion.exe after that. Do NOT use spaces, since ffdshow will think that's part of the filename. A valid entry would be "explorer.exe;oblivion.exe" (without quotes).
8. Finally, click "Ok" and start Oblivion.
* Game Pad Functionality
Although the PC version of Oblivion handles best when played with a keyboard and mouse, it is possible to play the game with an assortment of game pads as well. Due to the variance in these game pads, it may be necessary to make a few changes to the Oblivion.ini file located in My Documents\My Games\Oblivion. Below is a list of the settings that can be changed to make a Xbox 360 controller attached to a PC, function better with Oblivion. It should be noted however, that because the PC version of the game was optimized to play with a keyboard and mouse, the experience will NOT be the same, as using a 360 controller on the Xbox 360 version of the game. Additionally, these settings can be applied to other game pads, but the values represented may need to be tweaked further. Finally, the mapping of the buttons will need to be determined when entering the game, and can be changed in Options - Controls, from the Main Menu - Do NOT map the directional controls (Forward, Backward, Left, Right), as this will overwrite certain changes made in the Oblivion.ini file.

These are the default settings in the Oblivion.ini:
;X = 1, Y = 2, Z = 3, XRot = 4, YRot = 5, ZRot = 6
iJoystickMoveFrontBack=2
iJoystickMoveLeftRight=1
fJoystickMoveFBMult=1.0000
fJoystickMoveLRMult=1.0000
iJoystickLookUpDown=6
iJoystickLookLeftRight=3
fJoystickLookUDMult=0.0020
fJoystickLookLRMult=0.0020

Change to these values to get better functionality from a 360 game pad connected to a PC.
;X = 1, Y = 2, Z = 3, XRot = 4, YRot = 5, ZRot = 6
iJoystickMoveFrontBack=2
iJoystickMoveLeftRight=1
fJoystickMoveFBMult=2.0000
fJoystickMoveLRMult=2.0000
iJoystickLookUpDown=5
iJoystickLookLeftRight=4
fJoystickLookUDMult=0.7500
fJoystickLookLRMult=0.7500

Make sure the settings are saved. Note, changes to the Oblivion.ini file will not be saved if Oblivion is running when the changes are made.
* Updated Oblivion Launcher
The updated launcher now includes options for changing your auto detect settings for Video Quality. The presents are Very Low, Low, Medium, High and Ultra High. If you select Reset to Defaults, it will restart the auto detect and offer the best settings for your system.

2. Manual Errata and Addendum

* New Quick Keys. Press F1 - F4 to access your Journal and Stats menu
o F1 - Stats
o F2 - Inventory Menu
o F3 - Magic Menu
o F4 - Maps and Quests
* Page 20 states the Governing Attribute for Block is Agility. It should be Endurance.
the heck with the beta patch ... i just did the fix when i installed SI and it is running fine ... for 15 or so hours

i *may* do the patch if i do not have to reinstall everything
