Obamas to attack restaurants next

It costs money to offer stuff that people don't buy very much of. A restaurant cannot stay in business doing that. Well, they could jack up the prices of the stuff people do buy...

It doesn't need to, these options should taste great and be things people want to buy. It can be simple adjustments to how things are cooked and using ingredients that are being used already in other dishes.

Translation of 'taking away people's choice' from tea nut to reality:

Going from ribs on menu to ribs and fish both on menu.

Lecturing others on reality is not your strong suit, Craig.

I can't remember that last time I went to any restaurant that didn't offer salads, or sides of vegetables, coleslaw, or fruit in place of fries. I can't remember ever going someplace that forced you to eat fries or get a bacon cheeseburger. I don't ever remember going somewhere that didn't offer chicken, large, somewhat healthy salads, lighter-side sandwiches, fish, etc.

But it's not about the ends, it's about the means, isn't it? People can't eat healthy unless the government forces them, right?

In other news, studies have already shown that even informing people about the health of the foods they are about to eat will not change their eating habits or choices if they don't care.

And then when people don't buy them, then mandate restaurants stop offering the unhealthy choices?

You sound like you should open a restaurant.

Sorry but there's no way out. Only sugar and fat taste good. You can't magically make some bran muffin not taste like shit.
(edit. things also taste better when you are high or drunk or extremely hungry)

Fruit is delicious because most are extremely high in sugar. The salad at mcdicks is delicious because the dressing is all fat. Plants with no sugar are called brussel sprouts and they taste like Hitler. Plants with no fat are called salad with no dressing and they too taste worse than Hitler.

I still avoid healthier options because they're more expensive. Back when McD had deli sandwiches, I could pay $8 for a deli sandwich combo or $5.50 for a Big Mac with 2 layers of meat and cheesy goodness. At BK, I can get a $7 chicken salad or a value meal whopper combo and a second whopper.

Make the healthy options cheaper and you may get more people on board, but they're probably more expensive for a reason.

Well, when I read the thread title, Barack Obama is too nice to attack anyone. But when I found out it was Michelle on the attack, now we are talking about a real threat.
Be afraid, very afraid, Petranus. What will you do when she comes for you?

Your restaurant would go out of business in short order {giggle} trying to carry items on the menu that few people actually want.

If Mrs. Obama wants to promote healthier eating, then that's perfectly fine and a pefectly valid task for a First Lady to take on. If she/they want to legislate what we eat, then that's far, far, far out of the purview of the Federal government.

IMHO, a more pragmatic approach might be better center'd around changing Physical Ed classes in school to actually be *strenuous* so the kids get some excercise.

Indeed. Plants are very expensive because they are difficult to store and preserve. A 20 pound box of quarter pounder meat can be kept in a freezer for probably a year and it's still good. Things like tomatoes cannot be frozen because they turn to mush when they thaw. They can't be vacuum packed either because fruits don't like to be squeezed.

Meat is just simple meat economics. Lean and extra lean are premium products. Lean hamburger is more expensive than fatty hamburger. If you want a lower fat burger, you need to pay for it.

It's a pity there are so few fast food restaurants that offer big, good tasting, healthy meals. Take burgers, for example. At home I use 93% lean meat with some seasoning, 2% cheese, light mayo, and a whole wheat bun and end up with a great burger that isn't massive amounts of calories.

1/2lb 93% lean meat = 340 calories
Salt, pepper, seasoning = 0 calories
Whole wheat bun = 120 calories
2% slice of provolone cheese = 50 calories
1 Tbsp light mayo = 45 calories
Ketchup, mustard, lettuce, tomato, onions = 25 calories

Whole burger = 580 calories

McDonald's Double Quarter Pounder = 740 calories
McDonald's Big Mac = 540 calories (only 3.2oz of beef!)
BK's Double Whopper with cheese = 990 calories

Side up my burger with some sweet potato fries sprinkled in a mix of chili powder with a pinch of brown sugar and you've got a huge meal for about 800 calories.

I'd buy that for $10 vs a $6 meal with less food and more calories.

-Lean meat is very expensive
-wtf is 2% cheese? The monterey jack in my fridge is 34% fat
-Whole wheat bread sucks because it tastes like bread; white bread tastes like nothing so you only taste the awesomeness of the meat

TIME - Why Exercise Won't Make You Thin
Sounds like bullshit. I've gained 20 pounds since getting a desk job even though I eat less now than I ever did before.
My healthiest period was when I worked at a restaurant. Unlimited access to free food, but I was on my feet all day.

This is a problem only if it goes beyond encouragement and becomes legislation or decree via one of the federal government's many regulatory agencies.

If it doesn't go beyond encouragement, it's no different than Barbara and Laura Bush's promotions of literacy and womens' rights groups.

That's why I said I'd be willing to pay more for healthier food.

Cheese made with 2% milk.

I prefer the taste of whole wheat. If you want the taste of "nothing" then don't get a bun at all.

It's not bullshit at all. Think about it... if your activity level matches or exceeds your calorie intake, you'll maintain or lose weight. If it doesn't, you'll gain weight. Sitting at a desk all day is a significant reduction in activity level compared to being on your feet all day.

But then I would get grease all over my hands and that makes it hard to hold the steering wheel.

Sitting around and jacking off all day is what most fat people do. They are our secretaries, engineers, lawyers, and tech support. The tech guy might walk to your desk to fix things but most of the time he's sitting at the desk answering stupid phone calls and responding to stupid emails.

Not YET. Hopefully thats coming soon and we can drive more family owned businesses into the ground because we should all just be employed by government and the big businesses that Obama takes his bribes from. 🙄

You bet it will be coming soon, but not from her discussions with the restaurant's association, but from the mandated healthcare.

You can make food taste great if you have good ingredients, cooked correctly, and well spiced. It's not about only getting some special health food, but even for things like burgers, pizza, and tacos you can make them taste amazing and be much healthier than you would normally get. Then for things that may taste horrid you can also make them taste great with seasoning, or a very small amount of fat. The biggest problem I see people have when making food is lack of seasoning, and how it's cooked.

That's not to say I don't like fat and sugar, I love bacon I could eat bacon with anything. And I do make stuff that isn't good for me, it just would be nice to have the option when I go out to know more what I am getting.

I sure as hell don't want to have some mandate that you can't sell "unhealthy" food.

Translation of 'taking away people's choice' from tea nut to reality:

Going from ribs on menu to ribs and fish both on menu.

But if nobody buys the fish (or there aren't enough inventory turns on the fish to make it profitable) what then? Back to a rib joint or will the owner be forced to waste his money on fish that nobody buys to comply with a government mandate at the expense of having his restaurant shut down? And god forbid a customer who wanted fish would have to go to a restaurant that actually SERVED FISH... Oh the horror.

This whole argument is so silly I can't believe it has even worked its way into a political discussion. If you're serious about eating healthy then you're not eating in restaurants. You're cooking at home and the occasional night out is just that... an occasional treat. And if it's just an occasional treat then the food can be as crappy for you as you want because an occasional indulgence isn't going to have any long term impact on your overall health.

If this is now taking priority over fixing the budget and solving our debt crisis then we are truly doomed. It means we have 535 circus chimps running this country.

Is this a drawing of what you should eat or what people do eat?

The reason I ask is because plant oil is near the bottom and should be eaten in high quantities. McDonalds fries are deep fried in canola oil and people still think it's nutritionally worse than hitler. Hitler has very few nutrients.

The smaller top represents the lesser intake, the larger bottom is the stuff you should eat more of.

LMAO... any topic in here turns into a shouting match. You can really get healthy options everywhere anyways, even @ McD's. You have to know how/what to order & portion control. It all really comes down to whether or not the individual gives a shit about what they put into their body. Most people don't and that's their problem.

I think the point of that is because restaurants tend to not offer healthy alternatives. The whole reason this thread got political is because the Right-wing crazies are in a tissy over Michelle doing ANYTHING.

All in terms of calories though.

Fats and carbs are "calorie dense". 1 tablespoon of olive oil is like 120 calories, but a tablespoon of white chicken is like 5 - 10 calories. So you will end up having the majority of your calories from fats, carbs, etc., but that doesn't equate to more volume.
