The sea level thing whatever but it does seem a bit hypocritical to buy something that used such a massive carbon footprint to build and maintain.

Daily sea level check. Everything ok? Ok.

Being that the majority of domestic terrorist attacks are carried out by radical right wing white males, Slow, please get help. Facts are facts, you're statistically more likely to end up being a terrorist than just about any other demographic in the US.

It is so cute to see people who wallow in pseudoscience and science denialism shit the bed when trying to sound sciencey.

But that's no more hypocritical than the lifestyle of any upper-income-bracket person. Is there any evidence that maintaining a house like that involves any greater CO2 emissions than spending the same amount of money on anything else that a rich guy might spend money on? And most high-earning (or high-inheriting) people spend what they get and live a more costly lifestyle accordingly. So all it amounts to is saying all wealthy people have more environmental impact than poor people, per capita.

If you accuse Obama of hypocrisy, then you can also level the same accusation at everyone who has a higher income than a Chinese or Bangladeshi peasant. Which is sort-of true but doesn't change the nature of the problem. In fact that's true of hypocrisy in general - just because someone is being hypcritical doesn't change the truth-value of what they are saying (just as when my visibly overweight doctor said I needed to be more physically active)

To a first approximation, I don't see the specifics of spending matter - the more money you spend the more environmental impact you are probably having.

Which is why I wonder whether household energy-efficiency measures can make that much difference - if they save householders money, that money will get spent on something else instead (probably imported toys from China) which will probably involve CO2 and other environmental impacts.

The whole problem is really difficult and needs concerted effort with properly thought-through solutions.

(Also, Obama doens't come close to Sting - who has like 6 houses all over the world, all maintained with staff as his missus jets around in a private jet being a 'climate change campaigner'... it's fine to be irritated with individuals, but it has nothing to do with the issue itself.)

We're headed for 2.5-3C by 2050, >6C by 2100. By the time the sea level rises, there's not going to be many humans living in the US, if any are at all.

The problem is not with misusing his name, as much as misrepresenting him as a person....unless of course you are a racist then carry on comrade!!
I disagree, i think he's proven over the years that he's a Grade A #1 asshole. So the name fits and he's wearing it. He's got a pen and a phone, he'll change it if he wants to.

Yep, this is about it.

When you nail them down, these guys can't name any one thing Obama ever did that was so offensive.

They don't even mention objective ideological differences.

They just object to his mere existence. A black man with power over them... who, despite all the conspiracy nonsense, actually did a fairly decent job bringing our country out of the worst recession and crash since the great depression and did nothing to hurt the free market much less bring about "communism" and take their guns away as they all claimed he would do.

Does seem to be that way with some Republicans. I guess one has to acknowledge it's not the case for all of them. Just some of them on here.

I suppose it's a sort of 'warning' on their part. If someone as moderate and concilliatory and immaculately temperate in personal behaviour as Obama gets this kind of response, what would they do if an actually radical black guy (no, make that black woman!) made it to the top job?

I think about this sometimes. Obama was almost supernaturally calm, was very moderate ideologically, and ran perhaps the least corrupt administration in American history. None of this stopped Republicans from whipping themselves up into a frenzy, convincing themselves he was a traitorous foreign Muslim, that his administration was the most corrupt in history, that he was secretly plotting to take over the country, etc. They went absolutely bonkers about the least offensive Democrat they are likely to see in office.

God help us if an actual left wing Democrat gets into office. They will go nuts. All of their attempts to push this 'Trump Derangement Syndrome' stuff is 100% projection on their part. They think everyone else is as nuts as they are.
