-EDIT- OK, the transcript posted above completely changes my point. The line is apparently "when black will not be asked to get in back" which makes a whole lot more sense. I still don't see the humor in it, but I also don't see the offensiveness of it. Sorry for the confusion.

Even if that was the actual line when was the last time you heard someone tell a Black person to get in the back? I am betting not in your life time I know not in mine.
Those words were first spoken in the 60's during the Civil Rights movement and were meant to be light hearted. So keep being a silly individual, nobody cares.

And last spoken when?

The irony of the speech is that the majority of the people that voted for Obama (IIRC) were white. Did those people not "embrace what was right?"

Yeah and the good Reverend was acknowledging that

For anyone who thinks that whites will never be able to give enough for the 'white devil' resentment to stop, ever, the Rev. has gifted them with some lovely source material.

 I guess that makes Lowery a racist, then, since he said it. Seriously - when was the last time that blacks in the US were told they had to get in the back?

Yeah and the good Reverend was acknowledging that

Yeah, that's why he was asking us to "work for that day", right?

It's not surprising the silly individuals like you and Socio looking for a reason to be outraged would jump all over this. the only thing sillier is me thinking I could reason with you.

I guess you're right, especially after your "it was said yesterday" comment.

BTW, I'm not "outraged" - I just think it was an ignorant comment, much like your response.

Is This How the Post-Racial Obama Administration Begins?

Martin Luther King's dream has come to life. Or at least I thought so.

However, it was another minister ? Reverend Joseph Lowery ? who used his benediction, to ask God for this:

"We ask you to help us work for that day when black will not be asked to give back, when brown can stick around, when yellow will be mellow, when the red man can get ahead, man, and when white will embrace what is right."

Is this how the post-racial Obama administration begins? That someday the brown can stick around, the yellow can remain mellow, and the white will embrace what's right?

Even at the inauguration of a black president, we are being called racist.

Mr. President ? I want to believe. I want to trust. I want to hope for change ? but I am really failing to see how this is any different.

USA Today reports that you smiled when he said this and shook your head. And it's not like you didn't know what you were getting yourself into.

I can?t believe he let that racist ?blame whitey? bag of crap ever open his mouth!

Is this what we can expect over the next four years, with a president who just can?t seem to grasp not everything is the ?White? mans fault or simply refuses to distance from those with the belief that it is?

If it is you better believe racial tensions will be at the highest point in recent history by the time he is run out of office.

Is this what we can expect over the next 4 years? Constant complaining about every single person Obama knows? What has Obama ever said that makes you think he is an "everything is whiteys fault" type of person.

All you right wing douchbags do is complain. Have you nothign positive to say ever? Obama hasn't even done anything to complain about, so you make up rediculous crap like this?

Bah... You, and people like you are what killed the republican party. Good luck with that realization.

You and Glenn Beck have the biggest sticks up your asses ever - get over it - it was meant to be humorous.

 Humor? In a benediction? Really?

Absolutely...many pastors, reverends, etc... put humour in their benediction. Don't you ever go to church anymore?

I don't go to church anymore, so no. But I have been to many ceremonies where a benediction was given - never once was that prayer used to be "funny". Prayer is for communication with God - not for laughs.

Who the F are you to tell everyone what a benediction is for or not for. Man, what an ego you have!

And for the rest of you screaming "racist," (A) you don't understand what he said, and (B) are so quick to jump at anything any black reverend says, you'd see racism where none existed. Please remove that ginormous stick from your collective asses and quit feigning outrage, you retards.

 benediction - learn what it is.
So yeah, how dare I properly identify a benediction(short invocation which is a prayer) - my ego is clearly out of line...

I have expressed no "outrage" over his comments. I think they were improper and counter productive. And they surely weren't "funny" or "humorous".

The Reverend can say what he likes during a benediction, there is no script Cad. Get over yourself.

I didn't say there was a script. Try reading what I post for once.

I did, and you clearly said what was appropriate and what wasn't appropriate. Again, what makes you the final arbiter of what content is suitable or not for a benediction? Perhaps God has a sense of humor, ever consider that in your hubris? (Take a look at the platypus if you demand proof) But please, don't let me get in the way of your finger wagging, scolding and lecturing of the Reverend. Do you act this way with all reverends? Or just the black ones?

Transcript from Washington Post: Text

Lord, in the memory of all the saints who from their labors rest, and in the joy of a new beginning, we ask you to help us work for that day when black will not be asked to get in back, when brown can stick around...

(LAUGHTER)

... when yellow will be mellow...

(LAUGHTER)

LOWERY: ... when the red man can get ahead, man; and when white will embrace what is right. That all those who do justice and love mercy say Amen.

Everyone else seemed to get the joke. Sorry CsG. :p

compared to the foxnews QUOTE:

"We ask you to help us work for that day when black will not be asked to give back, when brown can stick around, when yellow will be mellow, when the red man can get ahead, man, and when white will embrace what is right."

That's top of the line journalism right there. How dare we ever accuse Foxnews of any bias? Oh wait...maybe it isn't bias, maybe they just plain suck at getting the facts straight. My bad...

That in and of itself should negate any point that the author (Notorious Glenn Beck) is trying to make. But people here cling to his feigned outrage like he is smarter than everyone else. And that he sees issues where the rest of us see nothing. Thanks Mr. Beck, please educate us some more on race relations....since you obviously have such a rough go at it.

I have yet to hear anyone from the Hispanic, Asian, or Native American community speak out against the prayer. Only whitey....yeah..there is no guilt there :p

Yes Glenn Beck we need more of your insight on these hateful and racist words by a pastor that has been loving his flock for decades. Glenn Beck should seriously be ashamed of himself for trying to put his spin on what was a very well done prayer.

This is bad comedy.

On a side note I have noticed that FoxNews is not the only media outlet that has misquoted the Rev Lowery USAToday has the misquote too. There are probably others, and i don't care enough to find out which outlet originated the misquote. But in listening to the Rev speak yesterday it is clear that he did not say "give back"

One should read the "Barack H Obama the Unauthorized Biography", it talks about how Obama discovered faith through Reverend Jeremiah Wright, who preached Afro centrism for nearly 20 years Obama attended his church. Obama as a president will be a way to say to america "Hey white america you've screwed us blacks and africans for a long long time, here's payback by me devaluing your currency and savagely reducing your standards of living like Big Jim Carter"

Huh. I missed the negative connotation he implied towards those communities.

Since it was misquoted elsewhere, obviously it wasn't clear. BTW, even CNN has the same line:

On a personal note, about what percentage of your day is spent reading/watching insane conspiracy shit? You seem to have an endless supply of it at your fingertips.

A bit late for that, thanks to W, wouldn't you say?
