of course he deserves this, he is the greatest saviour of our time, a man with a vision, a hero among all...

Seriously, when are they going to stop giving out the Peace prize to anyone? It's seriously diluting the award. While physics/chemistry/medidine Nobel laureates contribute positively to society, the Peace prize is an effing joke in comparison.

Aw come on guys... he said in his campaign that he would close Guantanamo, leave Afghanistan and Iraq, and create universal health care!

Campaign promises are good enough in my book! Let's give all presidential candidates a Nobel Peace Prize!

Obama's prize dilutes and makes a mockery of all previous and future prize winners.

Guys...

The deadline for nominations for the Nobel Peace Prize was Feb. 1st.

He became President on Jan 20th.

He was President for 10 days before his nomination.

What kind of *Battlefield Earth* leverage does he have on the committee to achieve this?

How does he win a peace prize? He hasn't done anything of note in foreign policy yet, except for drag his feat on any meaningful Afgan war policy and give Iran time to complete their nuclear weapons program. This is a lot like giving Neville Chamberlain a Nobel Peace Prize in 1939 for avoiding war with the Nazis.

Wrong. From Wiki on his Foreign Policy.

In February and March, Vice President Joe Biden and Secretary of State Hillary Rodham Clinton made separate overseas trips to announce a "new era" in U.S. foreign relations with Russia and Europe, using the terms "break" and "reset" to signal major changes from the policies of the preceding administration.[128] Obama's granting of his first television interview as President to an Arabic cable network, Al Arabiya, was seen as an attempt to reach out to Arab leaders.[129]

On March 19, Obama continued his outreach to the Muslim world, releasing a New Year's video message to the people and government of Iran.[130] This attempt at outreach was rebuffed by the Iranian leadership.[131] In April, Obama gave a speech in Ankara, Turkey which was well received by many Arab governments.[132] On June 4, 2009, Obama delivered a speech at Cairo University in Egypt calling for "a new beginning" in relations between the Islamic world and the United States and promoting Middle East peace.[133]

On June 26, 2009, in response to the Iranian government's actions towards protesters following Iran's 2009 presidential election, Obama said: "The violence perpetrated against them is outrageous. We see it and we condemn it."[134] On July 7, while in Moscow, he responded to a Vice President Biden comment on a possible Israeli military strike on Iran by saying: "We have said directly to the Israelis that it is important to try and resolve this in an international setting in a way that does not create major conflict in the Middle East."[135]

On September 24, 2009, Obama became the first sitting U.S. President to preside over a meeting of the United Nations Security Council.[136]

He has done more than any other president with regards to reaching out to the Muslim World. While I don't feel it warrants a Nobel, it's still something commendable that deserves recognition.

Wow they handed out a prize to a guy who knows how to eloquently make promises without actually accomplishing anything yet?
lol nobel peace prize.

From Wikipedia:

"Forms, which amount to a personal and exclusive invitation, are sent to about three thousand selected individuals to invite them to submit nominations. For the peace prize, inquiries are sent to such people as governments of states, members of international courts, professors and rectors at university level, former Peace Prize laureates, current or former members of the Norwegian Nobel Committee, among others. The Norwegian Nobel Committee then bases its assessment on nominations sent in before 3 February."

Not true, there's been some other dumb ones.

I like Obama and all, but all he did was get us to parity after Bush fucked everything up. Not really all that special when you think about it. But congrats, still, to him.

Well he did continue the conflict in iraq according to the plan his predecessor set up, and it looks like he's going to escalate in afghanistan, but of which are against the party's desires. And he's threatening region stability with inaction on NK and Iran, so I guess this is a good choice for him.

i think its funny that even the media who absolutely love obama are questioning this. i have been listening all morning and it seems no one is happy with this.

Most wouldn't mind so much if he were the lone shining beacon out of all the potential recipients, or if it were given after several years of effort and tangible success.

Methinks the committee loves Obama a little too much.

Nobel Peace prize? Wow. He's been president for less than a year and is leading more than one war.

He was nominated after being president for 10 days. Clearly, he did some amazing things in those 10 days to merit getting the award  In other words, the award has become total garbage.

wow how impressive. first president, then nobel prize winner, i wonder what he'll win next--greatest president in history, people magazine's sexiest man alive, sports illustrated's athlete of the year, cpu designer of the year....? is he the world's biggest overachiever or what?

Pretty good thread over in P&N about it....has actual discussion and very little retardation from both sides in it.

Better hurry though, cause it won't last.

Dancing With The Stars

It's nice to see a president get an award for what he's doing abroad instead of recognized for what he's doing to a broad.

The Nobel Peace Prize hasn't been worth squat since Yasser Arafat won it. Obama 'winning' it after accomplishing nothing just proves that it isn't worth squat again. The decision to give it to him was completely political in nature and had nothing to do with accomplishment...which completely snubbed much much much more deserving candidates.

According to Nobel's will, the Peace Prize should be awarded "to the person who shall have done the most or the best work for fraternity between nations, for the abolition or reduction of standing armies and for the holding and promotion of peace congresses."

So

😕
