If I was to gamble on a theory of what Obama could do on his own it would be that to direct the state department to stop counting dependents against the visa caps and retroactively clear that backlog. I believe this is within his authority at present. A substantial expansion of EADs may also be a possibility. However I think it is physically impossible for the government to actually process anything close to that number.

More probable is that there is reason to think that there will be some sort of immigration deal after the midterms thus bids are being solicited with that in mind. Dangling expansion of H1Bs and the extremely pressing need for the Republicans to start really courting the latino vote for 2016 could get things moving.

Regardless of what happens, Obama isn't making 34M new citizens (or even giving out that number of Green Cards) by executive order since it is legally and physically impossible.

why is it impossible? he can issue a presidential pardon to all illegal immigrants. And then whats stopping them from getting green cards?

Well, look at it this way. How many of those are already working and getting paid under the table? Look at that tax revenue it would give us if they were to pay taxes? Not to mention giving them Fed ID #s of some sort so all their unpaid medical bills aren't being transferred to Joe Tax Payer.

There is a silver lining on every dark cloud.

The shit lining is that this also depresses wages for the jobs more people are competing for.

He's waiting for the same reason Congress has failed to act before the election.

Oh look...there is a Snopes even for this now.

http://www.snopes.com/politics/immigration/greencards.asp

snoops was manily addressing the rumors that Obama all did this.

They speculate this is just for card replacement, yet have no proof that these cards are being ordered for replacements.

Why would there be a sudden need for 4 million green cards a year? We currently have around what? 1 million green cards granted a year. They last for ten years.

Wheres this extra 3-8 million a year surge coming from?

Because he does not legally have that authority. Also Congress.

ISIS. We are going to give all ISIS members Green Cards.

Or Congress will pass some sort of immigration reform during the time period the RFP covers which will require the government to at a minimum issue EADs in substantially higher numbers than present and process backlogs of dependent visas.

Whichever of those seems more likely.

Speaking as a legal immigrant, I think it's BS that the democrats keep pushing for the citizenship option. IMO if you break a nation's rules, you shouldn't be allowed to ever have citizenship - it should stop at green cards. I believe that's the morally right thing to do.

I squarely blame the democrats for the failure of any immigration reform proposal passing, because of their immoral insistence on the citizenship requirement. I secondly blame the GOP for not even bothering to see if this is something they can drop - instead just pretend to ignore their problem (as their corporate masters would like it)

This country has enough money to seal the border and make impossible to enter illegally. The politicians don't want to and both the right and left have their own reasons. Dems want to broaden their base, as they know most of the immigrants will vote Democrat and the GOP and others with large corporate interests want cheaper labor. It's the next best thing to more outsourcing. Think about it. I have Mexican friends in business, as well as farmers. Both have told me about the large amount of fraud they have witnessed. Some of these illegals run on multiple SSN / TINs, to be able to work, yet receive government assistance like section 8 housing, EBT cards, medical, etc. What pisses off one of my closest friends , is that his parents came here legally and worked their asses off to build a business, while these frauds work and send a shitload of their money back to Mexico. It's gotten way out of hand. The farmer says that many of them ask which SSN he wants, the one for work, or the one for welfare. We have government funded clinics all over the place here for them.

I like people from all places, but am opposed to people being here illegally. We should not be paying anything for their subsistence, only their hard work should pay for that. Also when it comes to having everything written in multiple languages we should have said fuck that a long time ago. If you want to live here, you learn to speak the language.
