The bottom line is this:

If you're Republican, just let it go. You don't get to bitch and moan about how everyone's too sensitive and then get angry over something like this. If the PC stuff really annoys you, then don't make a case of this just because you think it might be expedient; if you do, you're a hypocrite.

If you're a Democrat, take a long, hard look at yourself and ask honestly if you would have been upset about this if Bush had done it. If the answer is truly "no", then I applaud your even-handedness. If the answer is "yes", meditate on why the double-standard is OK.

Well said.

Personally, I think it was a bad choice of words for the president to make. Had President Bush said it, I'd feel the same.

I didn't even vote for Obama, but I have to agree. This dumb remark is about No. 9453254 on the list of things we should be worrying about.

Agreed, EVERYBODY has made a comment in their lives where they think "Oh crap I shouldn't have said that". I think it's ridiculous how people are fretting over this: I really cannot stand people who get offended so easily. Lighten the f#$* up. (Not talking to anyone on here). He did not mean it in an offensive demeanor at all, it was a mistake but shouldn't be an issue.

Do you all get tired of being wrong? All the MSM sites I checked have the gaffe on their front page. It is time for you sore losers to stop whining about the liberal media.

Agreed that it shouldn't be any big issue. However, after years of the certain people jumping on top of and gleefully bouncing up and down over every single Bush gaffe, the bar has already been set. Now we get to witness that sort of inanity coming from the other side of the political fence.

Personally I think it stupid when either side does it, but what can you do? People seem to love to engage in partisan stupidity.

It's a one-day story at best. That being said, nothing tops this :)

Why is this a one-day story yet Allen's macaca comments were a 2month+ story?

About 2000 articles on the gaffe. How exactly is the MSM giving a pass here?

http://news.google.com/news?ne..._drrb=q&ncl=1316987944

Further, the head of the speical olympics graciously accepted the apology...where can the story go when the aggrieved party is no longer aggrieved?

I was wondering the same. So far, three news programs this morning were all over it.
I'm not seeing any "passes" by the media.

Very much so. I'm a liberal, and I pride myself on having a diverse sense of humor. I often make off-color jokes, push boundaries, and stray far beyond the lines of the politically correct. But I'm not the President. While the comment is amusing, it is not something that a head of state should be saying, regardless of where he says it. Like it or not, the President is always in the public eye, so whether or not he's on a comedy show, he should avoid making jokes that target a minority group. One of the key jobs in representing the people is being diplomatic in your relations, and disparaging remarks about minorities are anything but. So as much as I don't give a shit if Joe Blow on the street says something like this, I do expect a higher standard from the President of the United States.

Because we care more about racial differences than the handicapped. Given our country's history with race (slavery and the civil rights movement being the two largest examples), it's not that surprising. I'm not saying it's right that we care about one minority distinction more than another, but it's true. Which offends you more, n***er or retard? There's simply no comparison in our culture.

I actually considered starting a thread to keep updated just to list the ongoing idiocy that we can predict of these attacks.

Do you see nothing wrong with the sitting president of the United States making fun on the special olympics?

Bush said some stupid crap in his day, I am the decider...nookular..et al... but this is way beyond that.

but he is the Messiah. All is forgiven.

Remember that joke Bush cracked about looking for WMD's? Unless Obama made up retarded children, spent billions of dollars looking for them, and left thousands of dead soldiers and civilians in his wake, Bush is still owns the inappropriate joke crown.

I think McCain's crack about Chelsea Clinton is more cringeworthy, granted, he's not president.

Pretty much sums up my feelings on this issue.
EDITED to add: I am glad he apologized soon after he made the joke.
