Read the post and look at the picture before you comment. They're asshats for not properly marking a "no parking" zone. Seriously, what's the point of the two white pylons on either side of the hydrant--why not expand them and paint them red to clearly indicate a "do not block" zone?

actually most drivers are asked that question when they apply for there written drivers test....how close to a fire hydrant can you park?

So where were you when this question was asked ??

One of the exceedingly rare exceptions is Lactobacillus plantarum and related lactobacilli, which use a different mechanism.

How do we know that is where you car was when ticketed? Looks like it's been backed up onto the bumper of the car behind you for the picture, which, will not do a bit of good if you try to fight this.

It's not marked, but everybody knows you leave plenty of room for hydrants.

clearly marked? The freaking hydrant sticking out of the ground isn't enough?

How about picturing the space needed for a fire engine to pull up to it, get hoses out, and men around it?

Are you effing serious? You think I would risk >$100 damage to my car to pose it for a picture to get out of a $100 ticket?? Like I said before, its the camera angle that makes it look like I'm on that car's bumper. In fact, the distance between the hydrant and my car is also greater--had I taken the photo at a 90 degree angle it would've shown that (unfortunately I couldn't stand in the middle of the street with traffic coming at me!!!) If you don't believe me, look at the SUV parked behind the car behind mine. You think he sandwiched that guy in too?

I didn't know that fire engines bothered to parallel park next to hydrants--usually I just see them parked in the street. Its a friggin' hose, and last time I checked the hoses are not 15 feet in diameter, or 10 feet or 5 feet, or even 2 feet. The men can fit in that space as well.

LMAO @ all the high horsed folks who would be just as pissed if it were there car. yeah, i'm sure if every single "gee, you're mad because you broke the law?" poster wouldn't be pissed off about that. i would. the city should have painted the curb. obviously, the OP went out of his way to park away from the hydrant.

that sucks, OP, and I would have been just as pissed. i wouldn't think the fire truck would need to park right up on the curb, and that the space you left was ample to access the hydrant.

if all they need is a hose, why bother with the engine? just get 2 firemen and a hose and problem solved right?

im sorry that an idiot like you has to be inconvenienced. you dont really understand that the rules are there because the FDNY needs the space to setup base to fight a fire efficiently - so they can run an extra hose, if necessary. also, having a jackass park several feet away from the car is a liability to the FDNY and the city. if your car becomes damaged while the FDNY is doing their job, then you (the owner of the car) will be pissed and irate because you cant get it through your head that if you park close to a hydrant, u risk getting damaged by stray equipment, or a firetruck backing up into teh side of your car (yes i've seen it before - dont park near the hydrant and u wont have to worry about getting your car smashed by a fire truck)

Did you stop to "think" that those posters KNOW not to park within 15' of a fire hydrant??

He parked FIVE feet away. That is just begging for a ticket IMO.

i got ticketed once for parking too close to a hydrant, but was clearly outside the painted curb...that's when i learned that in NYC the rule is 15 feet and markings do not indicate parking zones...

When I said ON I meant "as close as you can get", not that you drove onto their hood.

that sucks... there needs to be a yellow/red mark on the curb. I don't want to grab a tape measure to see if I needed 1 more foot.

Wow, 15ft... that's like 2.5 humans on either side. I can't count how many times I've seen people only 6ft away. Do they really need 15ft ?!

How much room do you think they need? We aren't talkin g about garden hoses here.

The OP should still have known better than to park 5 feet from any hydrant. Hell, he states that he's knowledgable about the practice in Washington DC where he lives. Their rule is 10 feet.

I live in central IL and our rules are for 15 feet. Ignorance of the law can't apply here since he was obviously breaking any rational distance of clearance. Plus, this is Driver's ED 101 knowing where you can and can't park. Maybe if he was at 10 feet he might have some argument since that's what it is back home for him.

If it were me, I'd be rightfully pissed.

However, I'd also know that I was, in the end, wrong, according to the letter of the law, and I wouldn't try to weasel my way out of the ticket.

Being justifiably pissed does not equal deserving to not get the ticket. IMO.

it doesn't look like you've blocked access to the hydrant, but they have rules with set measurements so just swallow it and pay up.

So you know every law and code for every city and state you have been in? There was no sign and the street was not marked. i would have done the same as every place I have been has either had a sign and/or marked the area to not park.

That is an odd one. Not marked but has stantions on each side.

Can almost be argued they are the markings.

I would fight it since the other vehicle was not ticketed as well and not marked anywhere.

here is a solution:
start carrying a chisel, tape measurer, and a hammer.

every time you are stopping your car, and see a fire hydrant near by, get said items, and mark 15 feet.

people will appreciate your good deeds.

I noticed that too. But, I'm going to apply Occam's razor: OP did an excellent job backing up without hitting the car behind him before snapping the picture.

Is it the camera angle or is the small car just behind his VW trapped? If the latter, while parking, did the OP subconsciously realize he was too close to the hydrant? :p

Don't worry, I don't think it was trapped for very long; about as long as it takes to grab a camera, take a picture, and walk back to the car.

Actually, I just looked at the ticket again and the cop who ticketed me indicated I was 7 feet from the hydrant. Not as bad as 5 feet, but still not 10 feet.

edit: Also, he put the state down as NC and not MD, probably because he saw the large UNC decal on my plate (but its a Maryland plate). He also didn't write down the VIN number. Hmm...

nope, it doesn't look like they need a total of 30ft. just for the access point.

If the rule is 6 feet and you were 4 feet, then it would seem you got a traffic officer having a bad day. Going by the picture, you looked pretty far away that a fire truck could access it easily.
