Hello xxxxx:

Thank you for taking the time contact McDonald's. We appreciate the opportunity to respond to you regarding the recent events involving hosts from the Hot 97 morning radio program in New York.

First, McDonald's does not support programs that discriminate or are insensitive to the plight of people suffering from devastating events. Starting immediately, McDonald's will indefinitely suspend advertising on the Hot 97 morning show.

It's also important to know that Ronald McDonald House Charities, McDonald's Corporation and the McDonald's family around the world have donated more than two million dollars to the Tsunami relief efforts. We take these matters very seriously and will continue to work together to help victims of this devastating disaster.

Again, thank you for giving us the opportunity to respond to your concerns.

It seems like most of the morning shows sponsors like Jackson Hewett, Sprint, Mcdonalds, and some other ones are all stopping their advertising. I also noticed that she wasn't really suspended until after these companies made it public that they no longer wanted to advertise on the morning show.

Hit them where it hurts -- the pocketbook.

In my mind this isn't about racism as much as it is about basic human decency. Some of the things in the song are an affront to humankind not just a race.

Excellent. I remember the time when a KKK klavern stopped by a local McDonalds, and how quickly the white management took over to serve them to stop WWIII from starting. So know from sight, and from working there as a teenager, they take these matters seriously.

Show your support and visit McDonald's for doing the right thing -- buy a salad if you're cautious about eating meat and all, but let businesses know when they do something right there is a reward.

That's good solidarity. Politicians, relief workers and members of the Black community united against that ugly piece. Wish that would happen more often, and it doesn't need an event like this to unite all races against racism.

That Tsunami disaster is the worst on record, and the least anyone can do is not mock the survivors. Whole towns were wiped off the map, and the survivors will have to rebuild somehow. They need the world's support, not a parody that is utterly offensive. It was their 9/11 x 11.

Man am I glad I don't listen to that morning show. They sound like a bunch of morons.

EDIT:

Look what I found:

Statement from WQHT-FM, HOT 97

New York City - Miss Jones and the HOT 97 Morning team have been indefinitely suspended for the airing of a song that made light of a catastrophic event, as well as comments made at the time the song was aired.

Earlier this week, Miss Jones said on the air "I apologize to all who have been offended by my poor decision to go along with playing that insulting (to say the least) Tsunami song. I should have known better and I didn't. So I'm sorry and hopefully we can move forward from this, or I can move forward from this being a better hostess, because I am better than that, and I know better than that -- and you deserve better radio than that."

While Miss Jones has apologized on the air, in the media and on the HOT 97 website, station management felt that stronger action was necessary to demonstrate the severity of the situation.

Emmis Radio and HOT 97 will not tolerate such derogatory and racially insensitive content. This incident in no way reflects the spirit of HOT 97. The station has a long-time and well-known reputation for community involvement and support.

Emmis Radio President Rick Cummings said, "What happened is morally and socially indefensible. All involved, myself included, are ashamed and deeply sorry. I know the members of the morning show are truly contrite. They know their actions here are inexcusable."
We would like to clarify that no company advertising on our station had any connection to the Tsunami Song and no company advertising on our station endorsed or sponsored the offensive material aired on the "Miss Jones in the Morning" show. We apologize for any misunderstanding that may have caused listeners to believe that anyone, other than the morning show staff, was responsible for the material that should not have been aired.

What's sad is the buck passing. This isn't the first incident of offhand racist remarks (look for the earlier "rice and bean eater" remark from Miss Jones to an Hispanic, too).

I'm all for free speech, but airwaves are long known for propaganda and reinforcing bad behavior. If a radio "star" like Miss Jones can repeat the racist commentary more than once, it's bound to occur again. That she'd be in a position to do it a third time, truly shows WQHT does have poor management (to be kind).

Once it can be a mistake (bad judgement of shock jocks), twice it's a pattern. Miss Jones could start a race or enthic riot if she doesn't truly reform, and that serves no one any good.

After the scandal that this has caused (as opposed to the other racist remarks she made that I had not heard of until now) I doubt she'll get another large-market airtime spot again (at least not in NYC - neither Hot 97 nor Power 105 will go anywhere near her.) There's always the off chance that she'll move, but the scandal will follow her. Just look at the length of this thread and how long it's been going on and the story been actively followed (and this is just by ATOTers)
Personally  to all the advertisers and Emmis for doing what's right. I've listened to the morning show occasionally and most of it was trash - glad they got taken off (most likely for another trashy show though)

Looks like they just passed the buck.

Update:

WQHT/Hot 97 and Emmis Communications Terminate Two Members of Morning Show Crew for Displaying Gross Insensitivity and Making Offensive Remarks

Emmis Donates $1 Million to Charities to Aid in Tsunami Relief & Recovery

New York ? February 1, 2005: WQHT/Hot 97-FM and Emmis Communications announced today that they have terminated the employment of morning show producer Rick Del Gado for his role in writing, producing and airing ?The Tsunami Song,? a highly insensitive parody of the 1985 single ?We Are the World.? Hot 97 and Emmis also terminated morning show personality Todd Lynn for making offensive, racially insensitive comments while on the air. Both terminations are effective immediately.

Simultaneously, Emmis announced that it will make a lump-sum donation of $1 million to Give2Asia to aid the organization in its Tsunami relief and recovery effort.

An internal investigation by Hot 97 and Emmis determined that the singularly egregious actions of Lynn and Delgado warranted termination from their employment at the station. Other members of the morning show crew: Miss Jones, DJ Envy and Tasha Hightower have each been given two-week suspensions. The salaries of these individuals will be redirected to Give2Asia for the duration of their suspensions, which will end on Wednesday, February 9. Another member of the morning show crew, Miss Info, has not been suspended.

?The actions of the morning show crew were socially and morally indefensible and the entire Emmis family is ashamed by this,? said Rick Cummings, President of Emmis Radio ?Emmis and Hot 97 have investigated this matter thoroughly over the course of the last week. Our decision to terminate Mr. Del Gado and Mr. Lynn while suspending the other members of the morning crew sends a message that this type of insensitivity is utterly unacceptable.?

Boo. Miss Jones has to go. She's a racist idiot. She was fired from her last job in PA for making a on-air game called "Chinkopoly."

just because the ghettopoly was made by an asian doesn't mean it's racist.

I bet if a black person came up with the game, they'd probably be cheering him for being a genius

It's a shame they didn't fire Jones as well. Regardless I'm sure they lost sponsors and listeners of her stupid show.

"Ghetto" is not an inherent trait of blacks, therefore using it's name in a joke is not racist.

Many races, including whites and Asians live in ghettos.

That's fair. Miss Jones was dumb for playing it but she didn't write it. I am assuming the other guy who got fired, deservedly so, is probably the one who made the comment he was going to kill some asians. I think this is fair and just punishment like I said in the very beginning. Damn shame some can't see what is fair punishment because of their own hate.

And I got one more thing for all of you who were crying and whining over Miss Info. Now that this is all passed over, if little Info doesn't like the soul crew and she is so offended, she can pack sh!t and get to scootin. Because she should have been suspended right along with the rest of them.

She should? Why? Because she went against them and said it was a bad idea?
