There is another possibility:

Nvidia supplies many parts to OEM partners (GK106/107). As the total capacity of 28nm wafers is limited, they might have known that their desktop chips will be in low supply and just given priority to the mobile space as they have contracts to fulfill. So rather than a manufacturing issue, it might be an allocation issue.

Given that GK110 is supposed to launch tomorrow and they've already taken like 150k preorders for Kepler-based Teslas, I bet they gave that high priority. The professional (HPC and pro graphics) cards are the big cash cows, not consumer stuff like GeForce gaming cards. http://vr-zone.com/articles/how-the...-prime-example-of-nvidia-reshaped-/15786.html Those lower-margin consumer cards may get lower priority and thus be more supply constrained.

GK110 launching now was never a question. They will present the architecture of BigK, akin to September 2009 when they released a whitepaper on Fermi. No person in their right mind would think that GK110 would launch 2 months after tape out...

I'd like to point out, for the chaps debating the steam stats, that the 7970 saw the exact same rate of adoption, in the first two months after launch, as the 680

Glad you noticed. One launched early in the month; the other later in the month.

Nothing against arabs but ME isn't exactly what I'd call Silicon Valley save maybe Israel. GF was doomed under that direction. Anyway what about Samsung?

I would place Samsung at 3½-4 years. People need to know priority 1 is to make money. And those chips Samsung produce will be sold for a very low price. Its basicly only x86 CPUs and GPUs that can fetch a high price. (Volume wise.)

Samsung is producing 32nm right now. They are on par with TSMC with the Low-Power process.

Samsung could be a future alternative for nVidia and Co if they are looking for another place to produce their chips.

Wow, interesting.

Sounds like there have been some serious roadblocks and hurdles for nvidia in producing GK110 if they are going this route for their compute customers.

With the lack of much in the way of any compute prowess in GK104, can we assume the chips used will be an iteration of GK104, rather than the same chip we see in 680/670 ?

There's probably some software crippling going on with GTX 670/680. It's pretty typical for them to do that. It's obviously not full blown GK110, but I'm sure it will be better than the Geforce cards.

nVidia released their Q1 2013 financial:
Gross Margin at 50,1%, expected to grow between 50,2 - 52,2%.

"Kepler GPUs are accelerating our business," said Jen-Hsun Huang, president and chief executive officer of NVIDIA. "Our newly launched desktop products are winning some of the best reviews we've ever had. Notebook GPUs had a record quarter.
http://phx.corporate-ir.net/phoenix.zhtml?c=116466&p=irol-newsArticle&ID=1695050&highlight=

And revenue should go up between 7% and 13,5%. They are on track for a record year. And think about this: What a year would it if they could produce Kepler?

Yep, must be all those poor and crappy yields and extreme fear mongering, while nVidia's margins were above guidance.

I find it funny, in a morbid way, to look at all the negative posts dooming NVIDIA...just to be pwned by reality...as NVIDIA approch a record year.

Char-lie must be really mad today ;)

Oh indeed!

I just bought a Zotac GTX 670 2GB today for the GF. You know, this second fastest single GPU in the world from this dying company with faulty chips and low yields that sells like hotcakes and reap in huge profits. Unlike a certain other company.

Don't post BS.

Nowhere on that site do they claim what you write. A clear error in your quotes is that you have used , for a decimal separator, in the US . is used to signify decimals.

You have angered me enough to register on this forum. I am a happy NVIDIA user and I am ashamed someone like you spreads lies of such a shameful calibre.

NVIDIA is doing fine, but they are not experiencing the growth you stupid fanboi brain is imagining.

Because of you people in Denmark have to suffer pain and agony from random forum trolls who quote at random, just look how fast your BS ended up in a danish forum:

He is really mad...he is on a danish froum I am on too..and he registered just because he is mad I refuted his links to Char-lie...and want to do some cyberstalking...because he is mad NVIDIA is not really in trouble...like Char-lie claimed. ;)

That his first post then is a foot-in-mouth moment is just hillarious.

He is the user "mee" in this thread:

I read his posts,I just can't understand how can someone be so angry with some company's financial result?Did NV's financial result adversely affected amd's share in any way?may be he is a share holder in amd who knows.

He is mad at me...for riddiculing him on the newz forum, for using Char-lie as a "source" on NVIDIA related stuff.
He thought he would pwn me back hereby screaming wildy about missing numbers here...I guess that backfired.

By yeah...very strange first post...:hmm:
