The only good thing about this nonsense is if you're shopping for a gaming laptop then you might be able to find a closeout with the "old" mobile GPU that's really the same as the "new for 2013" rebranded GPU. As a bonus you'll get Win7 instead of 8.
 
who cares if it is rebadged.

reviewers will review the new part/name and will publish the actual performance. any buyer with enough due diligence will research before purchase.

just like gtx 650ti vs gtx 560 vs gtx 470. similar level of performance.
 
Consumer electronics is quite heavy on the use of confusion to drive sales, which is why rebranding-renumbering is prevalent. Expensive digital cables being a good example of trying to confuse the consumer.

Nvidia has rebranded a few low end mobile parts for the last few generations. They've also occasionally rebranded here and there.

I've never seen a wholesale rebrand of an entire lineup though. That's just silly (not that any form of renumbering is acceptable). (and from the other thread, you can see that it confused posters here for a little while too)

It's a marketing tactic to make things more complicated than they need to be so you just throw up your hands and buy based on gut feelings, ignorant of the true facts because it's just too hard for average consumer to do the hard work.

I think it's really sneaky when I'm in Target and see that the 8 or 12 pack of paper towels both cost more per roll than the 6 pack. It's like they are using predatory pricing to take advantage of people who assume that buying in bulk saves money, so anyone without a calculator would lose money.

I can see how OEM computer parts would be under similar marketing pressure/tricks to use rebadging for mass-market customers, unlike the specialty enthusiast market where we all do our homework.
 
LOL at "which brand did it first". It's worse to do it 2nd. It means your competition beat you to the punch. Think about it, the reason to rebrand an entire series is because you've sold the entire series to an OEM supplier. The reason to only rebrand one or two low end models? Because you only sold them one or two low end models. It's not rocket science. 😎

It's the consumers' fault that OEMs are able to get away with this. Society glorifies ignorance.

I don't really see what the big deal is. It does make things confusing and I wish they had a separate name for rebranded products or something, but I wouldn't necessarily put the blame on AMD and Nvidia. To them it really is just a contest to sell more. If it doesn't set back the launch of the next cycle, then I'm really impartial to this naming scheme.

Why would you buy a 7970 and buy a budget CPU i5 ? I would think a guy with a 7990 could afford the i7 series.

This is a bottleneck imo.

If your going to get the top tier in video card, then you must get top tier in CPU to get the most out of your GPU. gl
 
Not that anyone here would care, but the thread title is most definitely wrong (and no Homeles, it isn't "copy and pasted" from the article - take your own advice and read it) and misleading.

The Article's title is: "NVIDIA’s Annual GPU Rebadge Begins: GeForce GT 730M and GeForce 710M Partial Specs Published"

Rebadging != Rebranding. If they were "rebranding" the line up, it would no longer be called GeForce.

I was actually curious if they were rebranding the hardware, and was thinking it be a stupid idea since GeForce is well known.
 
They're generally used interchangeably in the hardware communities, erroneously or not. Glad you've just now stumbled upon this.

And considering the quoted piece from the article explicity states that both companies are involved in this practice, claims of OP bias in regards to the posting of this article are completely moronic.

Homeles, just look at the OPs posting history. *Every* single post he ever makes is to fulfill a single agenda. Make AMD look good. It takes all of 3 minutes looking at his post history to see that. It's so blantant, that any post he makes is tainted by it.

That doesn't matter. If he's trying to paint Nvidia in a bad light, he's doing a absolutely awful job at it. You're making mountains out of molehills.
