Ripped from NordicHardware...

There has been a lot of talk about AMD being the first to market with a 28nm GPU since NVIDIA has not intended to release Kepler until 2012. During an event in Japan NVIDIA has on the contrary promised to start shipping Kepler before the end of the year. Beside higher game performance it promises three times higher performance per watt.

Let the games begin. This should be a fun year.

"Beside higher game performance it promises three times higher performance per watt [double precision] ."

Of course, DP performance / watt doesn't necessarily directly translate into a similar gaming performance increase. Still, sounds like Kepler will be a beast.

Isn't Shipping different to release? Meaning it will ship this year but then release say CES 2012?

"Start shipping" does not at all mean what it implies.

I think most people will read those words and think that means sometime in Q4 they will be able to order a Kepler-based GPU from Newegg.

But "start shipping" could literally mean nothing more than sending out chips to AIB's, not that those AIB's will even receive them in Q4 because Nvidia didn't put them into the mail until Dec 31st.

The thing the public cares about is when they can order the product and have it delivered, not when Nvidia is achieving yet another milestone that must occur in a long progression of other milestone events that all have to transpire in order for the product to show up at Newegg.

If they are merely going to "start shipping" by the end of the year then I will be impressed if I can order one from Newegg before Q1 ends. I won't be surprised at all if the reality is that I can order no sooner than April (Q2).

That's what "start shipping" means to me, I can expect to be able to buy it in early Q2. Kudos Nvidia, job well done, pats on the back all around  This is different somehow from how Fermi went down?

if nvidia's newest top card gives like ~15% higher performance than gtx 580 and 1/3 the power, they may have a problem if AMD brings out a card that is 2/3 highter in performance than 6970 and at about 15% less power.

You would think it would be a little harder to hide new product built on a new industry die shrink, but just last year Charlie over at SA swore up and down no one would be buying a gtx 580 by Christmas 2010, they shipped 11/09.
Nvidia GTX580 to paper launch next month

If you are a buyer, you will be waiting until 2011. GF110/GTX580 is not expected to hit the shelves until the very end of January, likely early February. Given that Nvidia has yet to release a single GF1xx part on time, and hasn’t released a single desktop Fermi chip that is fully working, don’t hold your breath for a timely launch.

I've wondered one thing, what's the actually condition of the 28nm process compared to say 40nm same time two years ago?

Its probably about the same. However, they did ditch 32nm and so probably had (somehow) more time to fix 28nm.

Hmmm, 5 months later ha? So we should expect Keplar in early January?

Well no the first announcement was at GTC 2009 in September/2009 where JHH showed a fake fermi

http://www.overclock3d.net/news/gpu_displays/nvidia_admit_fermi_was_fake/1

GTC 2011 is in October, so maybe March/2012 ?

Like I said, nothing is real with nvidia announcements until they give you a hard launch date.

We will see as the rest of the year unfolds. If AMD comes out with 7XXX and there is still no hard date announced from nvidia, 2012 most probably. If they are ready though, they'll release as close to AMD as they can.

I'm going 3x 7970s unless there is a hard launch date from NV confirmed at AMD's 7XXX launch and it's within a month off, if so, I'll wait and compare the two. If not, I'm going AMD rather than wait six months and hope for a release.

I thought kepler was delayed and to be released sometime on 2012? AMD will be releasing the 7xxx series before the year's end

These things change from day to day. company X announcing the launch of their product 6 months ahead of company Y, is not good for company Ys stock prices.

Company Y can and will react to such announcements to stay in the game. As pointed out by Groove though, sometimes you just cant make it any faster than 6 months after your competitor.

To be honest last I heard AMD said not to call the next series the 7xxx series it might be named something else and there was NO confirmed official release date ,but I did hear Aug, then I heard Sept, the it was black friday then it was late Q4 and Nvidia's rumor mill was saying Q4, then late Q4 ,then Q1 2012.

Then I heard 28nm was having problems for Nvidia, a week later they were saying that AMD could be having the same problems.

I think I can say with confidence, that nobody has any idea when either of these companies will release a next generation card.

Going on nvidia's past history with new processes, take this as a pile of hogwash.

First announcement for fermi was for November/2009, it didn't release until April/2010.

Until nvidia gives out a hard launch date, everything else is worth as much as the puff of smoke from a burnt out GTX 590. :D

+1

NV's track record speaks for itself. FWIW, no hard launch date has been generated by either camp.

While release dates for both camps are uncertain, we as gamers can only hope that the new generation of cards will be out by BF3 and healthy competition ensues.

o_O When was the last time NV's new generation card provided only a 15% performance increase? That has never happened (P.S. GTX580 is not a new generation vs. GTX480 and GeForce 9 rebadges of GF8 don't count). Kepler has been in development for a long time. It has been almost 24 months since HD5870 launched. I would expect AMD's and NV's 28nm chips to be at least 50% faster.

Wait, didn't you respond to a post by a certain hardware reviewer here in the Video section where the reviewer stated he was getting a new AMD card next week? If reviewers have them in August, there is a VERY good chance they will be released before year end.

a new AMD card next week?
That could be a new card to review like a 6870x2 or something else.
At best it could be a mid life kicker card like the 4770 was. That would be nice, but I doubt it. I'm sure we would have heard something if a next generation card was about to be reviewed for release in the next 2 weeks.

Perhaps, this is just smoke and mirrors from the NV camp, since it seems more than likely that AMD's next gen will be out by years end. You can count me in on a 7970...Good times!

Was the 8800gtx and gtx280 late too? I was away for those launches.
Or was just the gtx480 late?

please google the term 'paper launch nvidia' and you will find the track record i was referring to.

i wont say that the other camp is innocent, though.
