nVidia HQ AF problems again

Seems 3D Center has found that enabling HQ AF for nVidia hardware doesn't disable optimizations and as a result you still get shimmering. They also manually turned off the optimizations and saw a performance penalty. Translated article here: Click

I'd like to see those with 7800 cards test these settings out and see if you get a performance penalty or not. Some have reported not seeing a penalty while others reported up to an 11% penalty over at nvNews: Click

 
talk about insult to injury...nV's IQ has been going down hill since 6 series.. god I wish ati would drop that .net crap and huge memuse.😉

How do I turn off all the optimizations?
 
I havent noticed any shimmering, but its obvious the precision isnt changing if the fps doesnt change with it on/off.
 
ATI has shimmering too. HECK even my PSP has tonsa shimmering. These graphic card companies need to know that some people care about image quality.
 
You post about shimming, was the game. It shimmers on every card. Its a simple fact that NV cards have far more shimmering than ATi's. Some people just dont want to admit it.

I have a 7800GTX, and while it may not have all the bells and whistles of the new ATI cards, I don't notice the distortion at the mipmap boundaries much either.

You act like everything is rendered purple and they don't want to admit it!

Most the nV crowd are afraid to speak up because they know they will be accussed of being a AEG witch/warlock, and the stake and kindling are just waiting. You ATI "paper boys" practically have a clear playing field for now, so my advice is enjoy it while it last 😉

By paper boys, I mean the actual kids standing on the street corner hawking the newspaper back-in-a-day.

i would have to agree with you there, im hesitant about posting here now. i have enjoyed the use of NV cards for a long time, i have used ATI as well but nothing more recent than the 9500pro i have.

ive been really pleased with NV purchases and will continue to purchase again (based on research of course) i have to say i really dont notice shimmering, im usually to busy playing the game, Riddick however the shimmer was actually quite a distraction. thats the only time ive noticed it.

i darent actually post anything good or defending nvidia cause ill just get the AEG treatment.

Anyway, like I said in the other thread, I doubt this is anything but a driver bug.

Everyone knows drivers are scrutinized since the infamous "Quack" incident, the fact that you can still disable the optomizations manually makes me think someone screwed up a driver revision at some point and the error hasn't been found yet.

I don't see any penalties with HQ AF, with or without optimisations in Quake4, Doom3 or Riddick. There isn't any noticeable IQ changes either, mind you I don't stop and stare at fences or poles for hours on end, I just play the games. I don't have FPS figures as I do not benchmark by any means other than playing the game manually.

For the record 16x12, 4xAA & 16xAF HQ High Settings (XG 83.60v2) and as far as playability goes HQ AF & Optimisations have no noticeable effect.

On a side note, do you have any more nit-picking to do mr ATI?

I can understand why some make a big fuss over things like this though, you spend all that money, you want what you paid for. Not some half-assed hack job? intended to make a product seem faster at the expense of the anticipated level of eye candy opened your bill fold for?

No way, in this case, if there is a problem with precision i want to know about it. I personally have never noticed anything unusual, but i dont play many OGL titles (recently only D3).

It does and it doesn't. With default settings, Nvidia shimmers more, but if you switch Nvidia to High Quality, and assuming it works, Nvidia will have less shimmering. You cannot change ATI's shimmering at all.
 
I believe it's been proven many times that, overall, ATi's cards have superior image quality to nVidia's. This is just even more proof.

Where? I've never seen a single image quality article stating that. Each one has their pros and cons towards image quality. Although I really like the lower shimmering that Nvidia High Quality offers.
 
NVIDIA cards have 'HQ AF'? :Q 😕

I think that's a misnomer if they're talking about the 'image quality' adjustment. I was pretty sure the HQ meant it was rendered in GL_LINEAR_MIPMAP_LINEAR (and d3d) equivalent, not that it was anything angle-independent like ATI's.

The simple fact is that is my GTX's shimmer, badly in my favorite game, BF2. And a lot in HL2 as well. I didnt act as if its rendered purple, dont put words in my mouth. It is very annoying however. Im glad that it doesnt bother you, but it is an issue for many others. And for others its not.
