well, coming from an x800pro owner:

Not only are Shaders 3.0 not currently available but it is questionable whether there is significant increase in quality over shader 2.0... especially now.

sm3 was never about better IQ.... more effects perhaps, but quality is pretty comparable, it's more about efficiency of code and the 'cost' to do the effects.

Both x800 and 6800 flavors outperform the 9800xt and 5950 often times by 100%

agreed

x800 pro can be modded to x800xt pipeline/speeds.

and that's a load of crap.. out of dozoens of attempts, only 3 claimed successful, and all sapphire - which somehow doesn't make a lot of since as the mod is to the gpu, which should all be the same...

in general they overclock well however, and they should as they use the same gpu as the xt.

x800's don't have the same power demands as the 6800

perhaps.. but it sure puts out the damn heat... and it rather depends on which model you're talking - ultra vs xt, pro vs gt..

x800's dont take up as much room as 6800

true, but not necessarily (or at least not always) an advantage of one over the other..

considering the mod of x800pro, it's much more competitively priced

a load of crap considering the (lack of) success rate atm...

by the time ps3.0 is a needed (and by needed i mean, not having 3.0 is crippling to a card's performance and/or quality)

since we really haven't seen sm3 performance, not sure where that comes from..

Draw you're own conclusions, feel free to revise my list. It's a fact that both NVIDIA and ATI have powerful cards - no denying that whatever company you are loyal to. However, when considering the little things, from a personal standpoint I think ATI captured the big picture of an all-around good card with the x800.

i think the x800pro is a very good card, i just think it's difficult to judge the just how good the nv40 is until it's available in the real world.. along with sm3 apps, overclocking, etc., and of course the xt isn't out yet either...

What exactly are you saying? You can reply to my points on an individual basis, I made it clear for you by numbering them.

And what are blanket statements like "little innovation" supposed to imply? ATI is an autonomous company and makes whatever innovations it wants, it can re-release the 8500 if it so chooses, no one is forcing you to by a 9800xt, x800, or an 8500 at that the decision is yours. If you think there is no innovation when benchmarks clearly show it doubling in performance of your 9800xt and performing with the "highly innovated" 6800, then you are just ignorant, but again no one is twisting your arm to buy AMD. My conclusion, had you read it, was based on the points I had made prior to, and weighing the two cards based on a cost/benefit analysis... what I would gain and/or lose from purchasing one card or another. After weighing the facts (the things next to my numbers which you so conveniently disregarded) I came to a conclusion, that the ATI card is a better all-around card.

"Fanboys", as you so eloquently refer to me as, are people that believe things blindly... I, however, backed up my opinion specifically showing why I believed ATI's new cards had more appeal than the 6800. Next time you refute people, I suggest attacking their points instead of using ad hominems and blanket statements.

Interesting... I was not aware that the success rate was so low. To my knowledge the solution was achieved by soldering and a bios?firmware update.

BigBertha (at B3D) is claiming that retail (as opposed to the review and early samples currently in circulation) X800Ps won't be able to be modded, and it seems only a few Sapphire X800Ps have been successfully modded. I wouldn't count on a mod.

Now if someone will just get a hold of a couple retail X800XT's and 6800GT's and let us know how they overclock..... :D

i concur with the post above me, they[NV] are losing some ground right now and unfortunately for them, they have lots of competition from ATi and the x8's, from not having anything on the shelf.

6800ultra

They were never on pre-order @ CompUSA. The listing for the card appeared last Tuesday as a "store pick-up" only.

CompUSSR only had pre-orders for the X800 series.

I've been to both stores somewhat close to me and neither have any on order. I'd like to see a CompUSA with them in stock :p
