Alright so I've got aways to go....I'm moved down into the noticeably cooler basement.

My venerable X2@2.4Ghz is idling at about 25C.

Ambient temp down here is about 20C.

GPU is idling at the moment with core @ 700/1790/2000, and idle temp is 52C. Fan speed is 30%

I'm gonna have dinner let my system sit for a little bit and then see what we can do with this baby.

geez must be nice... i just tried 783 with my stock cooler.. gets up to about 83C max... but started crashing out of COD4... 777 seems stable so far... i only have the shaders up to 1833 but i havent really tried to work them higher yet... i cant imagine 49C @ load... im looking at 60C idle right now rofl....

I have a hard time believing anyone is seeing 49C load even if they are using an after market hsf. My BFG idles at 61C, and I even removed the factory applied glob of thermal compound on the core and put a thin layer of Ceramique. 🙁

Found my top clocks with the stock cooler at 100% fan...880!!! :Q!!!! Heh...Memory got up to 1050 before it started kicking out artifacts like mad. Temps at 880 core were almost 100C :Q!!

Anyways I've settled on 750/1850/1025 for now. Fan at 50%. Idles at 49C. Loads up to 70C. Not too shabby for a stock single slot cooler 😛
 
anyone know if there is an advantage to "linking the clocks" (there is an option in rivatuner)between the GPU and the shader on the GT?? Do you think there is a performance penalty for unlinking them? Kinda like the penatly for not running ram 1:1 ?? anyone?

Have you seen the Zalman VF1000 ? its fricking huge, i woudnt be suprised if he's seeing less than 50Degree's using that monster.

I am using RivaTuner to mod the gpu clocks and fan speed. I use ATITool .27 to only scan for artifacts, and every time I close it I receive an error that "ATITool.exe has encountered a problem and needs to close......."

XP Pro
FW 169.02

Any ideas?
 
I got the vmod installed tonight. My preliminary clocks at 1.305 volts are 821/1944/2000. 20 minutes+ ATItool stable. Stock voltage is about 1.15-1.16. I probably don't want to push it anymore than that. 1.22 volts I had 800/1890/2000 so I may go down to that. It looks like 1.3 is maximum anyway as there is overvolt protection on the 8800GT. My idle temp is 42C and load so far is 60C, so it is still much cooler than a stock card. My 3DMark barely budged as it looks like the Q6600 @ 3.2 is bottlenecking it. LOL I'll post more results tomorrow, especially Crysis demo.

That 880 core above has got to be BS. There are people with volt mods and water cooling that don't get over 850/2050/2000.

Update....I got a 15005 at default and 16000 at 720p. Not bad..too bad I don't have water cooling. My OC'd 320 GTS Fatal1ty scored 13300 at default.

 
OK, I'm confused here. I just popped in my 8800GT after having a 1900XTX for a couple years. My 1900XTX scored about 8200 on 3dMark06.

When I ran 3dMark06 on the stock 8800GT, I also got 8200. Then I overclocked it to roughly 700/1000, ran 3dMark06 again, and got... 8207.

What's the deal? I have the 169.02 drivers... could my CPU be holding me back this far? I see others getting 11000-12000 on stock cards... but I can't break 8200 on any clock setting, on any GPU. I've been using Rivatuner 2.06 and ATI Tool.

My rig...

Opty 165, mild OC to 2.25 GHz
2GB G.Skill 500Mhz ram
DFI Ultra-D mobo
500W PSU
320GB HD
BFG 8800GT OC
Win XP

Any ideas? You guys think it's the CPU? or maybe a dud GPU perhaps?
 
You have a CPU bottleneck. If you paid for 3dmark raise the reolution to 1600 and try again. It will probably be about the same score. Your CPU is only 2.25 Ghz. You can also see if the CPU will OC any higher. That should increase your score.

That's what I figured... hell, I guess that's a good enough excuse to upgrade to a Q6600! I'm not terribly good at OC'ing CPU's; I actually haven't been able to keep that Opty 165 stable at much higher than 2.25, which by all accounts is pathetic.
 
yup, 250x9. with my ram being 500's, that works out rather nice. But every time I've tried venturing higher, I get random reboots. I've tried changing the ram divider as necessary and I dunno.. it just isn't happening. If it is a bad mobo or RAM, I sure don't have the patience to figure it out.

 
I never did figure out dividers when I had a AMD. I always paid the extra $50 to get the higher multipler to keep it around 250FSB @ 1:1. If you already tried dividers it's possible it could be your power supply too if it randomly reboots. I guess we shouldn't have any more OT talk though. Try starting a thread in CPU's and see if anyone can help. But yeah...if you have an excuse to get a q6600 and can afford to do so then do it.
 
Well, to get back on topic... sort of... I did a quick (non-stability-tested) OC to 2.4GHz and my 3dMark06 score went up 300 points to 8500. So, I think then that the GPU is good... but the CPU is way underpowered. Now I know where to spend $$$ next! Thanks for the help.

i have a very similar problem.. my 3dmark went from 4k to 8k after i got my GT in... but i am maxed out on the CPU now... hopefully i will be fixing that this week... 🙂

With the stock cooler at 100% I could test unsucessfully in ATITool. It would go error free for about a min. So just messing around I set clock to 850, ran atitool error free for about 10 seconds. So i said what the hell and did 880...it did error free testing for about 3 seconds, shot my temps to 100C near instantly and then froze my computer 😛

Otherwise card works great at 750 core with 50% fan. I'm stable up to about 780 but then the fan needs to be around 90-100% and by that point it sounds like dustbuster
 
It seems everyone gets higher OC than I do with the video card...well I can be upset though as overall my PC is nicely OCed and Crysis plays very nice for me using very high settings except for Post and Shadows at 1280x1024 (39fps avg in GPU test).

Anyone doing the BIOS mod can post their before and after OC? I am still trying to figure out if its worth a try.

ahh..10 seconds. Mine can do 828/2000/2000 for 10 seconds. LOL I backed it down to 1.285 volts and 810/1950/2000. That has a random error anywhere from 6:30 to 8:00. Honestly I have never had a crash in games when I can do ATItool stable for 2:00.

Before BIOS mod 702/1724/2000; After BIOS mod 742/1836/2000. I think it only works when your core is below 740 to begin with. The OC's models are probably factory modded to keep them stable.

Are you just saying that? 🙂 I wish I had your card to do the vmod on. You are already at 780/1900 without it. At 1.25 volts yours would be at 820/2000 I bet.

I slapped the S1 and two 120mm fans on my 8800GT and it dropped temps dramatically. I now idle at 40C and load at 47-50C. The card is now ATI Tool stable at 775/1890/1900. The next step up is 783/1920/1900 and I get one artifact every 10 seconds or so but no errors from ATI Tool. I think I'll try the bios mod and see if that helps things at all.
