Do you like sports Excelsior? Like football? Any particular team you root for? Or do you not care what team wins. Point is, this is like techno sports, and all of us tech nuts are all talkin smack before the big game. Thats all. If you want to buy the best price/performance card at the
time, then thats ok. Go for it. Other folks obviously like to root for their favorite team. Nobody's forcing you to be a part of it. :)
I love sports (go Tampa Bay Lightning!) but I don't get that analogy. How can you have loyalty to a hardware manufacturer? It's one thing to root for your alumni or the local sports team but a graphics card brand? Hate to use that overly used word but that's just fanboyish.

I've got a 9800Pro (flashed) in my primary rig and a GF4-4200 in my 2nd rig. Who gets my $$$ next time? Simple answer - the brand that has the best card for the money. :)

I had no trouble with Basketball and Soccer when I was younger. What disgusts me about sports is the culture. The only athletes I continue to respect are bodybuilders, powerlifters, swimmers, and cyclists. The focus on strengthening the self instead of a pure pursuit of beating the other guy. I really don't give a shit if some guy can throw a ball through a hoop or run to an end-zone. That's not difficult. Now, maintaining proper form on a 1200lb free bar squat? You don't want to know the kind of training and dedication that takes. More than it takes to get a running back speedy, by far.

The core of the problem I think is that sports are divisive, whereas exercise is not.

Most of the other sports I consider to be too popularized - professional atheletes are overpaid, and over-revered. Plus, most of their training regimens put performance above personal health, which I don't care for at all.

It's called brand loyalty. Most people have a preference as to which company they buy their batteries from, their dish soap, their laundry detergent, their cars, their ATVs, their boats, and so on. The question is what is so special about video cards that they should be an exception?

remember the time when nvidia was supposed to pull out the big guns with 5800fx , rumours and websites like tomshardware sayed 5800fx was going to be king and was supposed to beat ati 9700 pro by an average of 30%?
5800fx looks great on paper but that card was a big flop.
as soon as 5800 fx started shipping to stores they pulled the plug and stop making them. even ati's old 9700 pro with aa/af can still beat nvidia's latest 5950fx ultra in most recent games.

Do you understand WHY people are loyal to brands? Because those brands have been proven over a period of time to be better than the competition when it comes to value, quality, performance, or any one of those 3. It is OBVIOUS that neither ATI or Nvidia has dominated the graphics card industry singlehandedly over the past 3-4 years. Both companies have released great products, you and I know that.

It is up to us, the consumer, to evaluate each release as it comes and make sure that it is truly the best product for ourselves.

No flying off the handle here. Its just that everything you listed that you like, are singular competitions. Bodybuilding, powerlifters, swimmers, and cyclists can certainly be part of a team, but can also compete singularly. This indicates your personality and a tendency to be anti-social and probably dont get along well with people in general. And theres nothing wrong with that. I know a lot of people like that. Sports are pointless to you. Great. They aren't pointless to me and I'm sure at least two other people.

Of course I do, but how they hell can you compare rooting for a certain sports team to being a loyalist to a graphics card company. You obviously don't get it. And I didn't say at the time, I mean period, at all.

Again..they shouldn't even have a favorite team. They don't understand that neither company cares about them. They want to make money and will do it however they can. Just wait for the reviews to come out and see who the true winner is.

Your inability to understand, or even better, your inability to want to understand is whats keeping you from getting your mind around how a person can have an allegience or loyalty to a sports team, or hardware company. I am a sports fan, and a tech nut. Nobody is telling you that you should have a favorite anything. So you really dont have a right to say anyone shouldn't. You can snub your nose high in the air and the only person who cares is you. Sure, everyone takes everyone's money. Thats how the worlds continues to operate. What would happen if every single solitary person on earth stopped spending money? Would be very bad right? The world is far from perfect, but thats how it goes I guess. I like nvidia over ATI. Both make great stuff. I want to see my preference on top. My choice, my right. You do what you want to do and dont scoff at others that do what they want to do. As long as it doesn't hurt anyone.

Wow, your reading comprehension is fvcking pathetic. It isnt hard to understand why people have favorite teams. No one has trouble understanding that. I too am a sports fan and a tech nut, but being a tech nut doesn't automatically make you a brand loyalist; infact, it should make you less of one. And yes I do have a right, free speech, Ill tell people what they should and shouldnt do, they don't have to listen.

Hell, looking at your sig you obviously have both ATI and Nvidia cards, that's great. Say you just had the 9700. Would you only buy ATI stuff cause you thought it was "THE BESTEST GRAPHICS EVAR" no matter what ATI put out? I'd like to think you wouldn't. That would be extremely retarded. Do you understand now? Ill say it again...

Consumers should buy the best product for the money, on the market. Doing so is good for everyone. It forces the company who's product isnt selling as well to make the necessar changes to increase profit.

The fact that you think those communities revolve around singular units shows how little you know of them. Every single group of bodybuilders and swimmers I've been around has been far more supportive of one another, even opponents, than any "team" I've ever been a part of. There's always this drive to be "the best on the team" or the "team captain". Amongst these "more singular" competitions, your opponent is yourself. It's a test of will and dedication more than skill, which is why I hold such activities in higher esteem.

As for your horribly inaccurate judging of my social life, I'll just let that sit as a completely uninformed opinion of a completely uninformed person on the topic at hand. It's funny how everyone suddenly becomes a doctor of psychology when they get on the internet.

Who said anything about doing it better? This is exactly what I'm talking about. The point is anyone can drop a three pointer, dribble, etc. There are 4 years olds doing this. Having proficiency at it does not impress me; rather, it lends itself to the idea that the "athlete", barring exceptional natural ability, has wasted a great deal of their life working on a skill with very little practical application. Assuming against all odds, a good basketball player does make it into the NBA, great. What if they get in a car accident and lose an arm? A doctor of physics, however, has no such worries.

Granted, the above is true of most every sport - they are not exclusive to people - which is why I have preference for the athletic activities in which not only physical ability but mental ability is required as well. To be a successfull basketball player, you have to be able to dribble, shoot, and play some defense. Becoming a successful powerlifter takes an in depth knowledge of human anatomy, human physiology, nutrition, myology (muscle study), and kinesiology (anatomical function, joint physics). I find, in general, the fields of competition I listed above tend to contain far more intelligent and interesting athletes than your standard defensive lineman.

There are of course exceptions to this, like every rule of thumb.

Anyway, are we done being OT yet?

nvidia's pullin out the big guns now

remember the time when nvidia was supposed to pull out the big guns with 5800fx , rumours and websites like tomshardware sayed 5800fx was going to be king and was supposed to beat ati 9700 pro by an average of 30%?
5800fx looks great on paper but that card was a big flop.
as soon as 5800 fx started shipping to stores they pulled the plug and stop making them. even ati's old 9700 pro with aa/af can still beat nvidia's latest 5950fx ultra in most recent games.

Remember the time when you had something useful to say in this forum? No? Neither can I.
