I hate how convenient amazon is because i loathe how their marketplace works with no quality controls whatsoever and random crap brands selling janky crap.
Now they are adding advertisements to prime video. Meh, i hate how every successful big tech company eventually seems to become a shady marketing empire.
Just a short rant. I know nobody cares.

Just got the email. So both prime music and now prime video are gimped.

People need to stop fighting amongst themselves and start fighting against the real enemy that has them by the throats.

Dear Prime member,

We are writing to you today about an upcoming change to your Prime Video experience. Starting January 29, Prime Video movies and TV shows will include limited advertisements. This will allow us to continue investing in compelling content and keep increasing that investment over a long period of time. We aim to have meaningfully fewer ads than linear TV and other streaming TV providers. No action is required from you, and there is no change to the current price of your Prime membership. We will also offer a new ad-free option for an additional $2.99 per month* that you can sign up for here.

If only there were a way to get all of the content you want for free.
I've always been anti piracy because I want people to get paid for their work. But Rossmann and a few others have made some compelling arguments of late. Enough so that I am tacitly in agreement now.

Amazon is indeed a shitshow. I still do way too much ship and sold by biz with them. My wife didn't like her shoes, so she can drop them off at Kohl's tonight with the QR code and they go back. They handle all of the packing and shipping. The 7 day try before you buy means you paid nothing. Because she didn't like them, it's no worse than the store trip she would have made to try them on anyways. Cool part is Kohl's has a killer sale going now so getting her in store is a win for B&M. Doing a refund and repurchase at $100 off sale price for an office chair from another B&M at the same open air mall The Avenues too. So I guess the upside is Amazon reminds you why you shop local.

This seems like it's gradually become more and more common/widespread on Amazon in recent years. There's a LOT of generic Chinese junk with names of random letter strings like QZLICINMO or some crap.

I also got the email about the ads starting in Jan/Feb. of next year. They'll offer a "no ads" option for an extra $2.99/mo on top of the cost of Prime. I won't be paying it as I rarely use it, and will be even less likely to use it now.

I like Gabe's ideology.
Make paying for it better and easier than pirating it ....

That said i'm not a fan of all the DRM on steam either and like services like GOG a bunch too....

The DRM is the rub though. We don't own what we pay for. Was it Apple that just yoinked a bunch of shows customers paid for? Yeah, services like GOG need to proliferate, because otherwise piracy is the only method to ensure you can keep content. Especially since I have read more physical media is getting axed soon.

I think Louis was talking about Apple doing that recently, but other platforms have also done the same thing.

There's tons of "perpetual licenses" that magically stop working after a few years across the world.
Stuff like that where you buy a program, but it needs to activate when you install, and, they shut down the activation server after a dozen or so years, but they wont remove the DRM/open it up ..

So frustrating when companies get away with that.

I won't use steam cause of drm. There's a bunch of games I might be interested in playing, but I'll do without if they come with drm, which is inherently what steam is. I do occasionally buy games from gog. I pay money, and I get files. That's how it should work. I can even live with a game being proprietary as long as I get what I paid for.

I get what you are saying, and to a very large part, I agree with most of what you are saying.
But, Steam does not require or always include DRM with every title.
Steam does allow the developers/publishers to include DRM (which means most titles do wind up having DRM), but, there are plenty of games on Steam that do not include any DRM.

Of course those same games are usually also sold through GOG, and, GOG gives a bigger cut of the revenue to the developer... so GOG is better for those reasons ...

Well, not all by any means, but my local library doesn't cost me a dime. Well, I pay my property taxes...

Now, I cancelled my 30 day free trial of Prime a week ago, on the final day. It had charged me $16.54 IIRC, but I was refunded the second I cancelled. I got a message from Amazon asking me to explain why I cancelled. A time before I answered that there wasn't any Prime videos I wanted to watch that didn't require me to pay as much as I'd have to pay AFAIK if I wasn't subscribed. Also, I wasn't planning to buy anything, but I didn't say that. This time I didn't reply. It's still true. The one movie I want to watch would still cost me $4-5.

The only reason I like prime is the free shipping no matter how cheap the item is. Came in handy in December. I did Prime for a year and cancelled, a few years ago.

Without Prime I just wait until I get enough in my cart for free shipment and only then do I buy. They jacked that again from $25 to $35 a few months ago. :(

I never pay Amazon to ship me anything, period.

Amazon offered me a Vine membership a couple months ago and I accepted. I haven't asked them to send me anything free yet to review.

So, what exactly is the deal with DRM? I bought access to Doom cheap a few years ago, and that required Steam, it was maybe BF or something. So, I have that, haven't played yet! What's up with this? I presume it involves DRM.

I'm assuming that to play the game, you need to have the Steam game client installed and running to start the game. I'd be surprised if it didn't. That's the DRM.

Got that e-mail today. So it's a additional $2.99/month to get Prime Video ad free, starting January 29th. :D

This may be enough for me to finally cancel Prime...they make enough money already, it's a BS money grab IMHO. Would stop me from hitting the order button on a bunch of things I don't really need if I need to leave stuff in the cart for a bit to get to the $35 free shipping. Win-win.

Will use free trials to catch up on the few things I actually watch there.

Are you renting a room in my house that I don't know of?! Is my smart TV sending you images of what we do over here every day?! Is Alexa copying you on everyone of our shopping lists and bulk buys?!

Ugh, Scamazon…

I'm glad the word enshittification has gained popularity, and hope it continues to do so.
