Now that Vista disables EAX effects, would you still choose X-Fi?

I think Microsoft made the move to axe directsound to "help" the gaming industry "move along". At some point you have to ditch the crutches and start walking.

OpenAL appears to be a big improvement over DS from what little I have read so I think the move will turn out well.

Oh BTW... for folks who say they will stick to gaming on XP until there are no more DX9 new release games... just wait until to see DX9 vs. DX10 in action. I think you will change your mind pretty fast... DX10 games look absolutely amazing.

1. - Already have a soundcard and don't need to buy another one.

2. - Vista offers nothing for me... Won't switch..

Yeah but from my understanding you wont have to buy another card, the only real problem is going to be games that render 3D audio using DirectSound. Most likely games that wont work because they render 3D audio using DirectSound ONLY will have other issues with Vista and wont work due to them as well. But from my understanding your sound card will not play a roll in this as it is a software problem not hardware.

Vista is a risk. I will not upgrade to vista for a while, but it does offer a lot for anyone that has a multi-core CPU and wants to really use it. Not to mention the DX10 games that will be coming out look pretty amazing (assuming you have a DX10 GFX card).

Right now we are on the cusp of some new technology and I have to agree with others, at some point you have to cut ties with old technology and move forward.

I really doubt people will migrate in vast(Fremin like) number to Vista...

That said a game company has to be stupid to release a "DX10 Only" game... they'd be out of business in a couple of months....

Some ppl still run win98 and win2000 ...

And when it's time to cut the ties w/ old technology, then I'd probably run Linux on my workstation/desktop... I've been using Unix/Linux for close to 20yrs and will
stick w/ it on my customers servers...

That's a positive step forward, but as an X-Fi owner I'll probably still choose to disable Vista.

I loved playing old games like Starcraft, Duke Nukem and even Warcraft III which isn't that old.

I'll stick to winxp until this gets dealed with, maybe in a future service pack or something.

How does it sound on headphones? Are you still getting positional sound on your headphones, or does it sound like crap?
