I have no problems with people putting ads on their videos. They can't control what software I use on my computer though. If they want to put ads on their videos, that's none of my business. And if I choose to use adblock, that's none of their business.

Regarding other issues, YouTube does indeed suck. HD is unusable - I can get HD Netflix, HD Vimeo, HD Dailymotion, and so on, but YouTube's HD just doesn't work because their servers are so slow. Their copyright policy is the worst of all video sharing sites. The interface sucks and there are a lot of videos that are "not available on mobile."

hmm, i have probs with youtube but none of these really.

my prob is that youtube always chooses the lowest quality video. it's annoying. not for slowness or anything like that (i don't find it slow), it's just the changing the res manually is annoying when you have a playlist of 30 vids to wade through.

why the holy hell does it not default to the highest res available ffs!? there are options in your account but only when you go to fullscreen.

then, when you watch a video in fullscreen you have that stupidly large "press escape to exit fullscreen" message that last way too long. once that's gone - then i can start playing the video.

oooh, wait, that's not the end. now there's a huge bar at the top and a seekbar at the bottom. they appear anytime i move the mouse. why no option to not show these unless the mouse moves to the top or bottom of the screen? i mean even homer simpson mashing buttons on his keyboard would get out of a video eventually ffs!

any video over 2 mins or so i just download now and watch in media player classic HC. it's actually less hassle than battling youtube at times

Sure it is their business, because you are wanting those people to work for free.

Would you work a second or third job for free?

By using ad blocker you are denying those people the ability to improve their life.

~ EDIT ~

Do you ever eat at a restaurant? Do you tip the server? That is the way youtube ads work.

i don't tip - at all unless on vacation.

i also use an adblock. i don't mind googles ads generally, theirs aren't the annoying flashy crappy ones. they do track so i adblock everything, including my phone

Make sure to go after ones with babies as those are the greatest threat on the internet.

Are you comparing a paid service such as cable or satellite to a free service like youtube?

Youtube is not free as you pay for your isp.

Your time = money so skipping commercials with dvr is no different then skipping internet commercials.

I have a feeling you are one of those people that forwards all the chain emails he gets to other people.

probably because their servers are so slow and overburdened that if they allowed people to default to the highest quality, it would overload them even more than they are being overloaded now.

Maybe they need to bring back some of the servers at youporn and redtube back to youtube.

Let me guess, you are upper management and expect people to work for free?

nope. i'm british and generally think people should get a living wage instead of paying peanuts and asking them to beg for scraps in the form of tips.

No, it's not.

If YouTube ads operated like restaurants, I'd be selecting my food and leaving a tip before I even received any service, regardless of how bad or good it may be. Do you know of any restaurants that do this? I don't.

Additionally, servers at restaurants get paid regardless of tips thanks to certain laws. Do YouTube users get paid whether or not people watch their videos or enjoy their content?

My tolerance is closer to 1 minute before doing likewise. Besides the control, the playback/scaling quality is better. Speaking of which, YouTard HD is not HD (which implies "high clarity of detail"). Sure, nominally it has the required pixels since the standard is so lax but the bitrate is below the worst overly compressed cable-telly garbage. So, I choose up to 480.

I have thought of making a video site like Youtube but better (less clutter, KISS principle), but I could never afford to run such an infrastructure. Servers, bandwidth... Google can do it since they already own data centers so it does not cost as much for them than it would an individual who has to rent/colo everything.

I think being in Canada I would be able to be a bit more lenient on the copyright bullshit without getting in trouble. The issue with the US copyright system is that fair use is now non existent. A video of happy birthday being signed to a 1 year old is grounds for a million dollar lawsuit because the song happy birthday is actually copyrighted (who knew! But it is). Or someone post's a video of their cat and the radio happens to be on faintly in the background. So Youtube has to take ridiculous steps to protect themselves from such lawsuit.

Another sad non-adblock user :p

Pirate.

That said, yeah youtube has become annoying as hell. The billion ads, the fact that videos won't load entirely, and a bunch of weird bugginess that I never used to get.

Youtube vids will stop working mid watch, and I'll have to reload the page. Or skipping ahead will cause the video to break. Or pausing the vid and coming back to long makes the video break, and I get a fake static screen (a total waste of effort that makes a failed video load more annoying and cost extra resources than what should be there - a simple black screen). There are a bunch of annoyances.

That said, no other site comes close to content, which is the reason why everyone puts up with that crap.

16:9 videos squished to 4:3. o_O

i can't stand that and have to download and adjust for even 30 second long clips.

That or 16:9 videos that had black bars added to work in 4:3, being played in 16:9. What's the point? Even on TV they do that all the time. That and 4:3 videos that get black bars added to play in 16:9, but then played in a 4:3 screen area (ex: TV channel that is 4:3). you end up with a huge frame around the entire video. Bars should not be deliberately added, let the playing device do it. At least you only have one set of bars that way.

Did you ignore his entire post?

Considering he does not know what he is talking about, yea, I ignored it.

I would like to know how many people posting in this thread is a youtube partner.

How many people saying they run ad blocker like getting a pay check?

Most normal people wouldn't whine about it. If I got money from YouTube, I'd likely see if I could just send it directly to the FSF or EFF. That's assuming I had ads in the first place. I'm against annoying people(mostly), and it's dickhead behavior making money by annoying people. The question come down to is the charitable benefit worth more than annoying people. I'm not sure it is, and I'm not sure the groups I picked would want money I got like that. They certainly use adblockers.

It comes down to a tax on the stupid, and exploiting the stupid is immoral.
