Vampire Girl vs. Frankenstein Girl - 5.5/10 - J-horror gore movie than isn't as good cheesy fun as Tokyo Gore Police or Hard Revenge Milly (+ sequel). The most amusing part to me is that the "heroine" is 100% evil. The villains then have to take their evil up to 110% to compete.

Have to say I was not expecting it to be so funny and the alien's attitude was the star of the show.
When they showed the preview of the clip on tv where the alien brings the bird back alive and then eats it I had figured it was going to be kind of a cheesy version of these types of movies but didn't follow it up until I noticed it was available to watch today and saw it was rated R but when I started to watch it I see why and was happy it was more for grownups then a kids movie.
Especially when he started to have the conversation with the religious chick while taking a shit.

Black Sabbath (I tre volti della paura) - 7/10: 1963 film from Mario Bava, hosted by Boris Karloff, containing three short stories. I liked this; Bava does a great job of building suspense and atmosphere and while the stories were all quite predictable, they were enjoyable, particularly the final story which I actually found kind of spooky/scary. It's all about building tension in these types of stories and Bava does it perfectly here. Fun watch for fans of classic horror.

The Adjustment Bureau - 6.1/10 - First off, its a romance story. I won't hate on it for that, but I will always prefer action/violence/mystery. I thought the acting was fine, and production value was pretty good. Neat visual effects concerning the bureau. The reason I rated it low is that I think the sci-fi elements were underdeveloped and kinda illogical to me. Biggest example would be
. So it was OK but left me wanting for more and feeling like the sci-fi element was unfulfilling.
the bureaus telekinetic abilities, as well as their ability to halt time. Both of these are super OP, really should be able to handle any sort of plan deviation with those powers alone, which makes the rest of the conflict unnecessary. Leaving those elements out would make it much easier to identify with them and their work. Secondary to that is the general uneasiness I have with fate & the plan and their prediction abilities. Wasn't really clear to me how they can have a plan and see where it is going and where they need to nudge things, but at the same time also have the plan changing and times where they can't see it deviating. Which is it?

Pirates of Silicon Valley - 5/5
I enjoyed this movie. I didn't know the history of the beginnings of Apple and Microsoft and how they ended up working together, and just all of the details showed in the movie. I thought it was pretty well cast too and enjoyed the portrayal of Gates and Jobs. I was hoping for a little more nerd talk in general, but overall I still enjoyed it a lot. I'm assuming it's pretty accurate but not 100% sure if it actually was.

I just watched this, and I agree with everything you said. I think I know what part near the end you are talking about, and I didn't really like it much either. I would rate it an 8/10.
I'm usually not a big Tim Roth fan, I know he has some die hards, but I really liked him in this. Hurt was great and so was Stamp.

Indiana Jones: Kingdom of (?) the Crystal Skull - 7.5/10 - Kind of half-assed watched it while playing Deus Ex, so not the best review. It was entertaining, a fun summer movie, which is what it was. Tone is similar but different, which I can't complain about 20 years later. Harrison Ford is more lively than his other more recent roles.

A flick supposedly based on the true story of a runaway train that could have been something, but it's all handled on the silliest of Summer-blockbusterish levels. Why did they think only 13 year olds would be interested in this?
Every actor in this film acts as if they know they're in a movie; forget about even the slightest suspension of disbelief. I would think material like this needs to be taken seriously to work.
If you're in the market for some seriously cringe-worthy/laughable scenes this one's for you.

I watched three movies yesterday, plus the last 30 minutes of another. I wonder if that had any effect on my ratings. Regardless, I need to have more days like that. With a Netflix queue of over 200 movies, it's overwhelming to try and decide on what to watch. I should just pick something and watch when I have the time, instead of posting on here or doing other equally useless things.
The Hit - 8/10:
I watched this because KT mentioned it a few days ago and I quoted him a few posts up saying I agreed with his review all around, so I won't really go into it. I enjoyed the build up more than the payoff, but it was definitely worth watching, I liked it.
The Bicycle Thief/Bicycle Thieves - / 10:
Man, I don't even wanna disrespect this by giving it a number, but I didn't like it. It's on every top 100 list and I'm guessing it may be the most famous Italian movie ever, but I just didn't get it. The plot is fine, I like the themes, the pace of the movie was fine, I just didn't feel any of the emotion at all. The acting was kind of average, and I didn't get pulled into the story. I liked the kid, he was cute, but eh. I liked the scene in the restaurant, but not much else in here.
I don't know if I wasn't in the mood or if I just missed out on something, but I'm not sure what else to say.
Le Doulos - 8/10:
Mixed feelings on this one. Overall it was pretty slick, but there were a few things I didn't like about it. It's a French film about a thief who is recently out of prison. He doesn't waste any time getting back into his life of crime, and some shit happens that leaves us wondering whose side everyone is on. It's part Crime/Thriller/Mystery/Drama. Jean-Paul Belmondo co-stars as a friend of the newly released man.
Charley Varrick - 5/10:
Walter Mathau as a small time bank robber who, by accident, robs a bank that is holding some mob money. Mathau is pretty good. Joe Don Baker plays the guy hired to hunt him down, and is very good. John Vernon has a small role. Outside of the acting of those guys, this movie is a dud. The story isn't very good and some of it is just ridiculously silly, particularly how women are portrayed(don't think I've ever said something like that about any other movie).

Apollo 18 - 2/10
"Found" footage is unearthed of secret classified Apollo 18 depicting man's last trip to the moon and the reason why we never went back. Lots could be done with this premise; a failure of technology, claustrophobia in an enclosed space, trapped alone, fear of never returning. Instead we get a movie with a threadbare plot and no redeeming features. After a while, I just couldn't wait for the movie to be over.
If I had to use one word to describe this movie, it would be horrible. I try to see a movie a week at the theater and this was the only clunker that I've seen this summer.

An entertaining light comedy. Not particularly memorable, but it did a good job of keeping me amused for an hour and a half. Doesn't really benefit from being seen on the big screen though, if you haven't already seen it I'd recommend waiting until it comes out on DVD.

Beauty Day - 9.5/10: Awesome documentary about a guy named Ralph dubbed "the original jackass", who had a show in the early 90's called Captain Video on local cable in Ontario and did all kinds of crazy stunts. This was a lot of fun and looked surprisingly awesome considering it's a low-budget doc. Many hilarious points and some very interesting turns in the guy's life. I may actually try to catch this again before it finishes its run here. This and Senna are my two favourite docs so far this year.
Blank City - 7/10: A documentary following the DYI film-making movement in New York during the 70's (sparked by the punk movement during the same time). This was fairly interesting and had some cool people discussing the movement (Steve Buscemi & Jim Jarmusch for example) but I had problems with how the thing was pieced together; it jumped all over the place and I honestly lost sight of what was happening when a few times. Aside from that I did find it interesting to see how these people came together to make these zero-budget movies on the streets of New York.
Attack The Block - 8/10: I liked this, but I was hoping to like it even more. It could just be I was so hyped for it that it could not live up to that. My favourite thing in the film was the creature design, I thought they were unique and pretty damn awesome. The kids themselves were pretty decent too and overall it was a pretty fun film, but I was not quite blown away like I expected I would be.
Storm Warning - 6/10: A low budget, straight-forward horror/slasher flick. Takes place in Australia where a well-off couple gets lost on a small island with some crazy guys that essentially take them hostage. The beginning 15 minutes or so is pretty damn boring, but once they got on the island I was pretty into this. Actually the protagonists are pretty awful (I have to think the writing is partly to blame), but the baddies do a very good job as the homicidal hicks and there were some great deaths later on. Not bad for what it was, I just wish the two leads had been so much better.
Dead Man's Shoes - 9/10: A low-budget UK film about a guy who returns to his home town, after being on a military tour, to take revenge on some thugs who brutalized his younger brother. Loved this movie; it's essentially just a revenge film, but with a lot of heart and some strong performances, particularly from the main guy Paddy Considine, who was awesome. I have to admit I did lose a bit of the dialogue due to the very thick accents, but not enough to take away from the film.
Gamer - 4.5/10: This movie was a real shame; I thought the first 25 minutes or so were pretty cool and had a real Paul Verhoeven feel to it, but unfortunately it fell apart after that and became far too earnest. I have to think the studios got in the way here since Neveldine/Taylor are more likely to keep things insane and it's too bad because this could have been fun in the way Crank 2 was.
Clash of the Titans - 4/10: Good lord Sam Worthington sucks. Why did this guy become a big blockbuster star like like that other charisma vacuum Shia Leboeuf? Anyway, there is a lot of interesting content here, but it was so poorly constructed that it collapses under its own weight. It seems they tried to cram a million different things in here to the point where things were happening too quickly and made little to no sense. The relationship stuff was terrible too, painfully so. I did think Hades was kind of cool, I really liked how he appeared and floated around, and I also think Gemma Arterton is super hot, so I was happy to have her to look at. Aside from that it was a surprisingly boring movie.

I absolutely hated that John Hurt did not kill the chick near the end. I guess we were supposed to think he had softened and took a liking to her, but it still seemed out of character to me since he was tying up ever other loose end.
Sounds interesting. Added to my list.
I'm usually a sucker for these found footage films, but yeah, I've heard this one is quite boring. I'll probably catch it on TV at some point though. I really can't resist horror films of almost any type for whatever reason. :hmm:

I agree. I don't really remember, but I assume the girl somehow knew where he would be crossing the border? otherwise, her seeing him like that at the end was even worse than letting her live in the first place. I also didn't like how Stamp's character changes up his attitude right at the end, because he was awesome before that.

Yeah, those were the most annoying parts of the annoying film. A shame it ended that way, but the rest of it was great.

I'll likely see Contagion this weekend (I'm a Soderbergh fan, what can I say) and hopefully The Interrupters and My Perestroika double header on Saturday.

Decent storyline (although it has been done before in many ways). Well cast for the most part although I didn't totally buy Cate Blanchette as CIA ICE QUEEN. Flowed well for the most part, but did stumble here and there with some wtf moments and heavy-handed cinematography.
