ah ok, so, i have to say NO.

While i would not, today, criticize a book just because it's a FRANCHISE NAME book - because hey, maybe it's good? Why would i assume a FRANCHISE NAME book is bad, after all, maybe the writer is a good writer.

But, i would question why one would buy, such a book. FRANCHISE NAME books tend to be some of the worst garbage in existence. Be it a Warhammer 40k book, a Star Wars book, a My Pony Friendship Is Magic book, or really any product of a different medium than [whatever medium the original product was]. The same way that, let's say, FILMS of good books tend to be bad.
Give this a try

All the Star Wars novels I had (left home and haven't returned in years. Then folks changed house so not sure if the books survived the move) were bought on sale for likely less than $5 each, because apparently they didn't sell well. Guess there aren't many people that enjoy good sci-fi writing or maybe the Star Wars cover kept them away. But I enjoyed them. It's when reading something transports you into another dimension and you keep thinking about it days or even years afterwards, is when I decide a book is good.

I totally forgot that!

The most devious chess player in the Empire whose chess pieces are capital spaceships!

Isn't Thrawn rumored to be in S3 of Mando? It would be pretty much in character for the Mandalorian series to drop another huge "guest star" into the storyline. it seems to really be that series' bread and butter

Most of the SW books were garbage.

The Sandman 2022 season 1
7/10

i read the series back in the 90's when my college buddy got the TPBs, i never cared much for the art as they had some real chickenscratch specialists during the early issues. eventually they hit their stride and found some better artists. gaiman generally has a tone to his works that mix real world and fantasy. it is a fun place and you can see it in his collaborations with terry pratchet.

the series unfortunately has none of the fun or wonder at the juxtapositions of weird stuff in the real world. the acting is fine but nothing special, the cinematography is dull and static. there is no tension to the visuals and the primary tension comes for david goyer's (who i am not a fan of) penchant for dwelling in the darker side of humanity. the endless characters dont have the heft of significance or any sense of grandeur, their conversations just seem tedious.

they would have needed someone like bryan fuller to showrun this in order to make it feel special. the budget effects and lack of unnaturalness to the supernatural characters just made it feel like a amateur fan film.

there are some cute bits from the books that transfer over well enough, but there is no cohesive whole to the season.

its better than netflix's cowboy bebop but still feels like a weak attempt to be an art piece.

Anyone gearing up for the Disenchanted world premiere on Nov 18? On the Disney+ channel. I kind of like the original Enchanted of 2006, & Amy Adams is in both. If the thread is into fantasy comedy musicals which both are.

chirp chirp. Well I guess not but I though I'd throw it out there. Anyway not going to jump on it Friday, I'll wait for the reviews. Have a feeling it won't measure up to the first one.

Finished watching the entire Expanse series this past week over several months and now I'm sad. What a fantastic show, easily a 9/10 overall.

This is how you do a sci-fi show, it felt grounded with great character development and story. Looking back on the early first couple seasons it felt so different with the Noir detective theme, and then evolving into a plot on a much grander scale, the people behind this Sci-Fi show know what they're doing. Rings of Power getting the billion dollar budget instead of the Expanse is a travesty.

It's so disappointing Amazon didn't let them finish the series, I know the show could end here and technically be fine, however there is unfinished business that's just begging to be produced on film.

The producers and cast seem to be optimistic about it's future. Amazon should release the rights for the remaining content, or just give them a budget to finish.

Yes it was definitely a flawed movie but it did stick out like a sore thumb partly because there wasn't enough of a back story for it in the Star wars universe because they never really made anything like that recently.

Even so it was a good movie because it was unlike the fluff we'd been getting

Daaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaamn this week's Andor was incredible. The "counter measure" scene was FANTSTIC. It was the rare "space ship" scene in the series and it was better than most in the entire catalog.

After decades of this in the star wars universe:

people are starting to prefer realism in the franchise?

what's next?
star wars: bourne identity with shaky cam?

I tried REALLY hard to like Andor but so far it just hasn't captured my interest because I just don't care about any of the main characters.

I still have a "soft spot" for Star Wars overall despite Disney finishing the job of killing off any trace of magic it had left.

I'll give the series ONE more shot based on the "raves" here but my expectations are quite low.

I'm nearly 50 years old and have been a SW nerd my entire life.
Andor is the SW I've been waiting for all these years and decades.

No blasters
No space battles
No Jedi
No Sith
Barely any fan service

The ISB is incredible and everything I wanted in "Imperial Evilness"
Who would have thought I'd be riveted by Imperial banking regulations

Sure the show is named "Andor" but the rest of the characters and story are so good there HUGE swaths of the episodes where he's not even involved and you don't even notice it.
Just pure great story telling.

Luthen (and now his awesome ship) is the best part of this show. Mon Mothma a close second, and Andor a close third. Everyone does great though. I'll probably watch again when it's over to pick up on anything I missed.

And my headcannon is that someone helped Andy Serkis get out of there.

YES PLEASE!

And to be fair, I feel there's room for both styles of storytelling in the SW Universe. Give me popcorn flicks with aliens and lasers and space battles. And also give me story and plot driven works like Andor.

Andor S01E01

Started off really promising with great visuals and a cyberpunk atmosphere. Didn't look like Star Wars to me. But afterwards, it turned into a royal snooze fest. I mean, I get that they are trying to build the characters but there are better ways to do that than plain boring. Only a true SW fan would continue watching.

This is, quite possibly the DIRECT OPPOSITE of every other review/opinion on this show.

i've watched 1 of the Andor episodes.

I agree that it was .. okaish. If we ignore the absolutely unnecessary Star Wars Franchise & Money Buckets Universe elements, it's an okaish anti-hero story, i'll probably watch some more, but i'm not *dying* to.

6/10

I agree with him. Except my score would be lower. Approaching 1. Could be the jungle scenes with the alien language annoyed me. But overall, I don't see anything special, other than the opening scene.

I'll see if I can muster the time and effort to watch Ep2.
