The Thing (2011) - 5.5/10: I know this is supposed to be a prequel and there are definitely certain elements that give you background on what happened prior to Carpenter's Thing, but in so many ways it just feels like a remake. Either way, it was pretty pointless. I didn't mind being back in the world of The Thing, but a lot of the paranoia and fear of Carpenter's film was removed, thereby diminishing the impact of the film overall. There were a few decent scenes and Winstead was decent enough; the rest of the cast was kind of odd though (Vaughn from Community really threw me off). The ending also made no sense (not the coda, the actual ending); maybe it was supposed to be ambiguous? Either way, it was dumb. Didn't hate the movie, it just seemed kind of pointless.
Cowboys & Aliens - 4/10: I really enjoyed this for the first 30 minutes or so, but once it starts to really involve the aliens, it completely falls apart into silliness and cliche. The mystery and western elements in the beginning were actually kind of interesting and compelling, but once you start to realize where everything is headed, it becomes ridiculous and very paint by numbers. The cast was decent enough, aside from Paul Dano, Olivia Wilde (I really do not understand the appeal), and the stupid kid from The Last Airbender, but I really only truly liked one or two of the characters since most everyone in here was paper thin. By the end I just found it all quite dumb and wanted it to end.
Dream House - 1/10: Wow, what a freaking mess of a movie. It has a solid cast (Daniel Craig, Rachel Weisz, Naomi Watts, Elias Kotais) but this is an absolute disaster; it honestly feels like a cheap, made for TV movie. It's about a family man who quits his job in the city to spend more time with his family in a big new house in the suburbs. From there, strange things start to happen and his world begins to unravel. The film attempts to be clever and keep you guessing, but the way it is put together on one hand feels blatantly obvious, but on the other, makes absolutely no sense. I was willing to put up with the cheesiness hoping the story would come together, but by about two-thirds of the way through the film it was apparent this was going to end in disaster, and I was right. Skip this one.
