I started watching it last week and had to pause on Netflix to run some errands. Decided to finish watching it yesterday to find out that it was no longer available. The movie is only for DVD subscribers! That was quick. :-(

That's too bad. It's been on there for a long time, though

I also saw Hugo recently and wasn't that impressed by it. I'm not sure why it got such awesome reviews. It wasn't a "bad" movie, so to speak, but there was nothing particularly charming, or compelling about it, I don't think.

I've said it many times, but to me it was half of a great movie. The first half was slow and boring but the latter half was great. Does not make for an overall awesome film unfortunately.

Just in case I havent stated it lately: The new Futurama is a SERIOUS disappointment.

I've been avoiding them because it would make me sad to see those characters being unfunny. :(

:( It would be nice if titles expiring within the next week or so had a warning about it, rather than small type under the credits and tags. Or possibly even a prioritized queue, where expiring titles in it go to the top. Doubtful that'll happen, though, given that they seem to like dumbing the web interface down every chance they get (FI, why did they start using this god-awful gallery view, and why won't it save my preference for it to DIAF?).

I try to check Thenowhereman's list every week or two to find anything interesting that will expire soon, but a few potentially interesting movies have still slipped by me.

Yes, the Netflix's search engine needs to be refreshed. For example, I couldn't find "Army of Shadows" at all, until I went to my 'Previously watched' queue and found it there. Now Netflix filters out all DVD-only titles since I am no longer a subscriber. How convenient for Netflix.

I wish the search engine would show all the movies - isn't it the way to advertise all their movies in case someone does decide to upgrade his/her plan?

Gotta search on a computer to do that. That's how the search works on other devices, DVD subscriber or not :/

I prefer chicks like Jenna Haze, Christina Hendricks, and Anne Hathaway. But I wouldnt turn down Jenny McCarthy and neither would you.

Ip Man - 7/10
Very good. I would have preferred the fighting the to be a bit less fantastical, and the early sets less pristine in general, but eh, that's what action film-makers like to do. My real gripes are that the story begins with too little back-story/justification, and our protagonist appears too perfect, and there is no reason for his actions (why was he so good, why did he not need to work, why did he not want to be relied upon by others, didn't he get addicted to opium, wasn't he a cop, etc.). I get that it's a tall tale vision of a biography, and I get that there is a heavy Chinese nationalist hand in the story, and I get that they've gotten over WWII about as well as the French and Germans have, but the extent of nobility and piety made me want to  at times.

You learn more about him and how his dad was a businessman if you watch Ip Man 3. The movies do pretty much get worse as you go on, so beware. :p

I assumed he got addicted to opium as a painkiller because of
the bullet he took in the shoulder after defeating the general

Drive Angry - 2/10

I decided to watch it, as there was nothing else on. Wow, I was expecting bad, but it was worse than I had expected. Terrible writing, terrible acting, horrendous CGI, and terrible plot. Why did I give it a 2 then? Charlotte Ross...buck ass naked. That short scene was worth 2 points.

I can usually find something in a movie to like...it's pretty bad that the only good thing I could find was nudity. lol. Seemed all they did was pay for big names for a shitty movie to make in 3D to reap the prices people pay to see 3D movies, no matter the content.

21 Jump Street - 9/10 - I guess I'm not really too sure what I could say was wrong with this movie to knock a point off, but it didn't strike me as a 10. Anyway, I was a bit surprised by the movie as it had some good laughs, decent action, and was an all-around good time.

EDIT:

Thinking about it a little more, one of the things that I noticed early on is how they didn't spend a ton of time in the back story for the movie. I think they only spend about 5 minutes leading you up to the present day. I know I've seen a few movies in the past that tend to linger too much on detail that doesn't really matter. So, it was a bit refreshing to see that not happen.

Cedar Rapids - 7/10:
I don't remember how this movie was marketed, but I'd bet money it was misleading.

Yeah, this is a comedy, but it actually has a story that comes first. It's nothing Shakespearean but the movie makes an effort to make at least a bit of sense. It's not great but they do try.

There are a bunch of good laughs, John C. Reilly is the man and Ed Helms is pretty good when he's not being too Ed Helmsy. I DVRd it on HBO or somewhere and it was a decent easy watch

Mid-August Lunch - 9/10:
A man unexpectedly finds himself talking care of four women, three of whom he barely knows, in this sunny comedy from Italy

I watched this because the director Gianni Di Gregorio just released a new movie so I thought why not. Looking now, I see he was also one of the writers of the Italian crime film Gomorra(which I haven't seen yet, but will be eager to now). And whoops, it seems like he was the lead in Mid-August Lunch! And he was great!

It's a lightttttt light movie; an hour 15 minutes. I don't think this movie is for everyone(my girlfriend hated it) but I really enjoyed it. It's directed and acted perfectly and I found the interactions of the characters very interesting. Very funny too, though not in the traditional sense. I'll probably watch this again sooner than later. It's on netflix streaming, btw

Drive 6/10: The movie was so damn slow. And when it picked up, it was too artsy fartsy. You can have a nice balance of action and substance (think Bourne series). This had neither. Also Ryan Gosling is just not convincing as a pretty boy tough guy.

Forgettable. How the hell did this get 94% on RT?

The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo, as parts 1/6 and 2/6 of the extended edition trilogy - 9/10

I have not read the books, but the major character background holes at the beginning are taken care of as the plot progresses. By the time part 2 is over with, I don't feel like I've missed anything they had to gloss over due to not being able to inster pages of text. On the whole, it's very much like Grisham story--every slow scene is a set up, and even the beginning credits are packed--but more subtle, understated, and exceptionally human. Personal power plays are equally important and influential as political and economic ones. There is no grand conspiracy, but there are many small conspiracies, affecting each other in emergent ways that their originators would not have liked. I'm not sure if it deserves to be in the realm of 10s, but it's an outstanding movie on its own, regardless of what more may be in the source material.

Bag of Bones - 1/10
This, I have read. Upon seeing the adaptation's existence, I thought, "I can barely remember any important details from the book, but I don't recall it being movie-friendly." Well, it's not. I quit after about 20 minutes.

Although you are entitled to your opinion, I find it hard to take your reviews seriously.

The Thing (2011) - 5.5/10: I know this is supposed to be a prequel and there are definitely certain elements that give you background on what happened prior to Carpenter's Thing, but in so many ways it just feels like a remake. Either way, it was pretty pointless. I didn't mind being back in the world of The Thing, but a lot of the paranoia and fear of Carpenter's film was removed, thereby diminishing the impact of the film overall. There were a few decent scenes and Winstead was decent enough; the rest of the cast was kind of odd though (Vaughn from Community really threw me off). The ending also made no sense (not the coda, the actual ending); maybe it was supposed to be ambiguous? Either way, it was dumb. Didn't hate the movie, it just seemed kind of pointless.

Cowboys & Aliens - 4/10: I really enjoyed this for the first 30 minutes or so, but once it starts to really involve the aliens, it completely falls apart into silliness and cliche. The mystery and western elements in the beginning were actually kind of interesting and compelling, but once you start to realize where everything is headed, it becomes ridiculous and very paint by numbers. The cast was decent enough, aside from Paul Dano, Olivia Wilde (I really do not understand the appeal), and the stupid kid from The Last Airbender, but I really only truly liked one or two of the characters since most everyone in here was paper thin. By the end I just found it all quite dumb and wanted it to end.

Dream House - 1/10: Wow, what a freaking mess of a movie. It has a solid cast (Daniel Craig, Rachel Weisz, Naomi Watts, Elias Kotais) but this is an absolute disaster; it honestly feels like a cheap, made for TV movie. It's about a family man who quits his job in the city to spend more time with his family in a big new house in the suburbs. From there, strange things start to happen and his world begins to unravel. The film attempts to be clever and keep you guessing, but the way it is put together on one hand feels blatantly obvious, but on the other, makes absolutely no sense. I was willing to put up with the cheesiness hoping the story would come together, but by about two-thirds of the way through the film it was apparent this was going to end in disaster, and I was right. Skip this one.

Agreed. That show was so underrated though, I actually really liked it back in the day.

Been wanting to see Cedar Rapids for ages. One of the contributors to Filmspotting had it as his favourite movie of last year.

I really like Gomorra, so I will have to check out Mid-August Lunch. Never heard of it before.
