Noticed the price of gas has gone down.

Gas prices close to my house are continuing to go lower and some are getting close to $2.90/gal.I wonder if they will go lower than $2.70 like was seen last winter.

So Kentucky and a few others states jumped but the national average was continuing down (which means other states were still dropping). There was no uncertainty. Lexington (and other areas in KY) were being milked, all the while oil prices were dropping.

Competition causes local gas prices to 'cycle'

ANDERSON, Ind. — The topic of gasoline prices tends to draw strong opinions, especially when the going rate varies from county to county, city to city and state to state.

On Wednesday, gas prices around the city were between $3.39 and $3.49 a gallon. Those prices are down almost 10 cents from Monday, when prices were $3.49-$3.55 a gallon. In the Indianapolis, Carmel and the Fishers area, gasoline is selling for $3.21-$3.29 a gallon.

Patrick DeHaan, senior petroleum analyst at GasBuddy.com in Chicago, said the irregularities in gas prices are often attributed to fierce competition between gas stations.


That competition results in "price cycling," which starts when stations slash prices to undercut local competitors. Before long, the gas station is selling its fuel for less than what the it paid.


According to DeHaan, consumers can see prices jump 20-30 cents in a day when retailers stop operating at a loss and start to sell gasoline at a profitable price.

“One of them says, 'Enough of this – I’m not making money,'” DeHaan explained. “When that happens, prices tend to jump very quickly.”
Price cycling can create rates that vary according to state, region or community.


Indiana is sometimes cited as the most volatile state when it comes to gas prices, with Ohio and Michigan close behind, DeHaan said. On average, he said, gas prices in Indiana move up or down each day by about two cents.


Scot Imus, director of the Indiana Petroleum Marketers & Convenience Store Association in Indianapolis, said it is unfair to take a snapshot picture of gas prices in a community on any one day and then compare it to other communities.

“Georgia has a very low tax on gasoline when compared to other states,” Imus said. “And if you compare us (Indiana) to Kentucky, who does not have a seven percent tax, they are cheaper than us.”
Imus also said gas prices are heavily regulated and insisted that rates are not excessive anywhere in Indiana.

“It is a mystery to some people, but there is nothing more transparent,” he said of fuel prices. “You can do the math and see what the retail price is. When I am buying a gallon of milk I don’t know what has gone into it before it goes to the market, but it is not uncommon for a retailer to get wholesale prices and not be able to pass them on to the consumer immediately.”

He agreed with DeHaan about the volatility of gas prices in Indiana, but he said it actually works in the consumer's favor — since motorists are sometimes buying gasoline at a price below profitability for gas merchants.

“There is less consumption,” he said. “You know when the time changes, and you spring forward in the spring and fall back in the fall? It’s the same for gas prices. When the cold weather hits, people don’t want to go places, and it helps to build the gasoline supply.”
 
Prices have been on a steady decline in my state since about 9/1. This is due to the summer driving season being over as they nearly always decline after labor day. Lol at fools tying to govt shutdown, all evidence shows it started long before, and in tune with standard seasonal price shifts.

You are obviously wrong, the gas experts at Gasbuddy and the Retail Association said it is because of competition and they are selling gas for less than they pay for it.
 
Three weeks ago, two local chains were $0.10 below Speedway, BP and Shell here in Michigan. They were even below Sam's Club

Then there was a 20-30 cent jump. two weeks ago.
Prices have come down to below the jump.
However, the locals are now $0.10 higher than Speedway, BP and Shell

The joke going around for a while was "I lose money on invividual sales but I make it up in volume" In short gas station owners are full of shit. I wouldn't run a business that only makes a few cents profit per gallon of gas, would you?

Retail gasoline prices across Texas down 2 cents



AAA Texas on Thursday reported the average price at the pump settled at $3.10 per gallon. The nationwide price for gasoline declined 3 cents this week to reach $3.33 per gallon.


The association survey found Amarillo and Texarkana have the most expensive gasoline statewide at $3.14 per gallon. The cheapest gasoline in Texas was found in Beaumont, Galveston and Houston at $3.05 per gallon.

None Hurt In Fire At Citgo Oil Refinery In Lemont



A fire overnight at an oil refinery in southwest suburban Lemont could affect prices at the pump in Chicago.


The blaze started around 7:40 p.m., and the refinery’s crude oil immediately was shut down.


The flames spread quickly, lighting up the night sky, as firefighters spent nearly two hours getting the fire under control.


The refinery was conducting air monitoring at the site Thursday morning, to ensure the safety of refinery workers and nearby residents.

Mine is that not just "one" but the whole Industry coordinates on purpose mysterious fires and breakdowns on a regular basis.

They get rewarded with higher profits and prices for this incompetence.

Got down to $3.09 as late as yesterday and today all the stations jumped 30 cents.

Don't see anything on the news or Web.

You guys hear what the latest excuse is?
 
Came down between 2-5 cents this week in Colorado

I was able to get fuel along I80 in Iowa at $2.92 for unleaded Plus

You are reaching. KY football is not Alabama or Ohio State. Not a chance. Go back and look at my postings (and the charts). KY does not have football games year round, and on top of that, against Alabama State? Sure thing...they raised it nearly $0.40 in ALL the surrounding areas to get the huge influx of people expected to want to see KY vs Alabama State (KY is 1 and 6 right now).
