Yep, only saw them once here in my (short) lifetime, about 5 years ago, I remember it was just a touch of red to the North.

Here in Rochester, Mn they started out has green lights in the north and northeast at about 5:30-6

they transformed into white light and cover nearly the entire sky.

around 8:30 they looked like and angel with its wings spread across the city.

I have never seen these ever and have lived up here all my life.

all I can say is WOW!

I'm out in Churchville, and have a dark sky I see lots of reds in it, nice in binoculars, but my A40 pic sucked 😛

It's beyond the design parameters of this camera. Oh well.

sweet, I was just walking back to my dorm, and I looked up and said "holy crap! That looks like the northern lights" so then I ran in here and voila! it is! Now I go back outside to watch

What the heck kind of plant is that in the middle?

lol, it's this weird palm tree looking thing. for some reason my parents tied the leaves together and they point straight up.

get a mount, or find something to use as a mount
Absolute steadiness is a must for long exposure photography.

the first few were with the camera on my knee 😛 the rest were with the camera resting on the rail of my deck.

Yeah I wouldn't know the first thing about getting a picture of them, they look amazing in person, but I don't know how to set my A80's exposure/sensitivity to get them to show up.

They're spanning almost the entire sky from west to east right now, with a peak that everything flows to right in the center of the sky. Like a lot of colored glowing smoke being sucked out of a hole in the sky 😎

set the apeture to the lowest number (the biggest appeture is the lowest number, go figure), and exposure to .5 to 1 second? manual focus to infinity. iso 800 or higher.

Awesome! Thanks! Immediately grabbed the camera and started adjusting... here are the results... they show that I definitely need a tripod and that I shake too much in 40 degree weather 🙂

Northern Lights 1
Northern Lights 2

Note: They're really not that bright, but the A80 has some wicked exposure and apeture to it. I'll try to get something better.

Nice pictures everybody!

I am back now.

OMGWTF!!!!!!!!!!111!!!!!!11!!!!!!!

It stopped raining here and the sky has cleared out. All around the sky is the greenish-blue aurora borealis. Way cool.

😀
