Here's one more, tried the knee method. They settled back down towards the horizon.

At one point, there was an exhaust trail from an airplane that cut through the sky right between two bright spots, looked pretty sweet

are you using zoom at all? zooming makes the lense slower, so try to make it non-zoomed as possible. crop using your computer.

The zoom is set to infinity and it's zoomed completely out, the problem is I'm shaky as hell and nothing sturdy to set the camera on.

I might make another attempt soon. Waiting for Winston's new pics.

I was wondering if i was seeing the northern lights, I've never seen them before, I was driving into the city and just assumed that there was a stadium nearby or something.

Absolute steadiness is a must for long exposure photography.

I got some awesome colors @ 15 - 20 seconds with a digital rebel...

Cool, you got some nice red in there, I haven't seen it that strong out here yet.

Yeah, the A40 is pretty primitive by todays standards, but I have the advantage of a heavy duty Bogen tripod.

Maybe a new Canon digital SLR after the tax season :D

You are seriously missing out.

And I'm pissed... I'm in 4th year astrophysics and have never seen them in person but have always wanted to. Goddam rainy-ass city.

thought it was a clear night but the clouds were moving in from the northeast.

I did see light exploding from the clouds, which looked really sweet. The longer I stood out there the more the sky lit up. I only saw very light blue/white-ish light.

My jaw would have hit the floor if I saw something like this

wonder if it'll pass over Northern Virginia (fairfax county) ...

pulling an all-nighter anyways so it'd be nice to take a break and watch the show

I remember seeing them in the Twin Cities several times. They are not too great looking there but it was enough of a show to be impressive. My friend in Alaska sees some great shows. i should email her to see if she has got some shots.

had a good show in N Illinois

i tried taking pics...but i got nothing but black

i wonder if i left the lens cap on....

2:00 AM and the show got AMAZINGLY brilliant, they were dancing and flashing everywhere. I shut off all the outside lights and climbed on top of the garage and made sweet sweet love to the sky. The pictures really don't capture the motion and the feeling :(

Am I the only person expecting pictures of huge buds of marijuana in this post?

thanks for the post.

I looked when I got home and there are waves of green light undulating in the north sky.

Either its the northern lights OR Canada is melting.

Saw a little here (southwest MI) at around 3 AM. Faint green curtain to the northwest with occasional flashes overhead. Tried to take pictures but got only blackness.

Sounds like it might happen again tomorrow.
