I was driving home from work and was coasting down a hill, limit was 55. I thought I was doing about 65 but the cop clocked me @71. I was unfortunately in a car that didn't have my USMC sticker in the back, and I was trying my hardest to put out all the "I'm a marine" signals without blatently asking the cop to tear up the ticket because of my military stuff. I guess the officer didn't pick up on the signals until the ticket was written. When he finally saw my military ID he became extremely apologetic, but the ticket was already written so the damage was done.

Damn. Oh well, I'll go to court and get my driver improvement class and get the points taken off my record.

90% of the officers around here are either current marine reservists or former marines. I really shouldn't have to say more ;)

EDIT: I guess I should say that I've gotten out of about 3 tickets so far when I was in my car with the USMC sticker. The officer comes up and we just start chatting:
"where've you been stationed at?"
"oh I was here and here... etc."
"Woah! I was there 3 years ago... is <name> still there?"
etc...etc...etc...
"Ok, well I'm not gonna write you a ticket, just slow it down a bit"
"Thanks officer, I really appreciate that"

Hmm, am I the only one somewhat dismayed by the fact that this happens? Its like hot chicks getting out of tickets because they are hot chicks. Not cool when the tickets get "saved" just for normal non-marine, non-hot people IMO.

Dude, as a marine I'm on call 24/7 if some major war breaks out. Does your job pay to to die if need be to protect others? That rates a little bit of leeway in certain situations.

I have a USMC sticker on the back of one of my cars, and I think that's WHY they pull ME over!

Of course they may think I WASN'T really a Marine (long hair that I am) but they DO seem to mess with me more when I drive that car than when I drive the VW with the Hippie stickers on it! ;)

Edit: Maybe I should stick a Viet Nam service sticker on there as well. Though I WASN'T "In country" I WAS in during the war. Seems dishonest to me though, so I won't.

yeah, it seems obnoxious...but its part of life. im sure its not a hard and fast rule that marines cant get tickets, becuase that would be really problematic for me. but thats one of the benefits of joining certain organizations...the connections. and people know that going in (usually). besides, everyone has been given something or graced with some kind of benefit becuase they know someone that works somewhere or something similiar.
if not...go chat people up more. it really helps you get a lot of free stuff!

It has nothing to do with occupation. A doctor could say he deserves leeway due to his patients needing him. A scientist deserves leeway because he happens to be working on the cure for cancer. George W deserves leeway because he is the President of the United States. IMHO, law is law. But that's just me I guess.

1. You are not special just because you're Marine
2. You volunteered, nobody forced you to sign up. The danger comes with territory, you knew that before signing up.
3. Traffic laws do apply to you, see #1 for reasons why.

Doctors on call speeding to the ER can get out of a ticket, as soon as they tell the cop what's goin on the cop tells them to head on. GWB has special plates (on his limo or whatever they cheauffer him around in) that are government "do not arrest or pull over this man" plates

Yea patboyx, I guess you're right. We humans and our "social creature" traits tend to receive things based on status and "who we know" instead of "what we know" which is quite unfortunate.

On the other hand, my mom worked for the Police when I was in H/S and I was a fire fighter (Jr.) and the fire house was next to the PD station. I NEVER got tickets. :)
