I was called on jury duty once. I was on travel with work and on the other side of the country. I had to call the prosecutor and they excused me.

probably not a factor in civil cases.

I got a jury duty summons about 4 months ago... the court would only let me plead my case if I actually showed up in person and pleaded my case before a judge. unfortunately, at that point in time, I could not financially afford to miss a day of work, so I ignored the summons.

4 months later, so far so good, but I won't ignore my next summons. I still feel pretty guilty having done it, but it was that or potentially not have the rent money at the end of the month.

As stated before it's easy to get out. Just show up and say you have school.

I had the same mind frame, I just wanted to get out of it.
I stayed, got selected, and served the trial.

To me it was very interesting watching the court system in session. I learned a lot
If I ever get asked to serve again I will for sure be looking forward to it.

It was only one day long; which is probably why I am so optimistic about the experience.

I was on a jury last month. It took about 2 or 3 hours each day for 5 or 6 days. You can find my thread for better detail, but it really was a waste of time because the DA didn't have her act together.

As for getting out of it, they didn't even care about the people who didn't get paid, they still served (at least two people on the jury). And the crazy old man who tried to get out of jury selection got sent back to another court room for selection. It's actually pretty difficult to say stuff that will get you dismissed if you're trying things like "I can't be impartial", or things like that. Remember, the Judge and attorneys have heard Everything.

They made me sit for 2 days straight and tried to put me on 2 cases. Both times I said that I either lived near the area, or worked near the area, and I was dismissed.

Funnily enough, I wasn't lying either...

Paying taxes for working your butt off and earning money and then paying even more to use that money to buy things is enough, methinks. :)

All suspects are guilty. Period. If they wern't guilty they wouldn't be suspects now would they? ;)

Everyone knows that.;)

If you're a student you can defer to the next vacation (winter vacation in your case). When that time comes you get summoned again and serve jury duty.

Sign up for the Army, that should get you out of it.

I would rather move to CANADA!

plus my sisters in the army, only one per household.

You should move - occasionally having to serve jury duty (Your CIVIC duty) is a SMALL price to pay for living in the greatest country in the world.

Poor thing - you are SO busy you can't spend time participating in the wonderful process that helps guarantee our liberties. (and YOURS)

Easiest thing to do: ignore it.
The summons tries to scare you but they can't prove you got it. People move all the time. Mail gets lost all the time.

Don't write an excuse because they won't excuse anyone anymore. If you write an excuse, that's proof that you received the summons. So, don't fall for it. It's like junk mail, if you reply, you're screwed.

The people who "do their civic duties" tend to be retirees or unemployed or simple minded people. Other people have more important things to do than make a judge's (aka politician-lawyer, aka power hungry professional liar) life easier. Remember, a judge and police officer and lawyer GET paid big bucks to be in court, You Don't!

you can line up with the rest of the people to tell them why you can't be there for your duty... Being in college, they will likely excuse you, but you still have to show up in the first place.
Depends, when I was in New Orleans, I just called the number on the notice, gave them juror number on the card they sent me, said "I'm a student" and they said OK, don't show up. The end.

However, now that I live in NYC, there is no way to call them. You can mail back your response (I had to do this the other day since they sent me another notice 2 months after I served :roll;) to which you never get a response :)roll::roll;), but there is no way to talk to a real live person.

I did that in CA and I even had vacation coming up, and I have no clue what was supposed to happen. I think I was still supposed to show up the first day, but I never did. I mailed in my registration + explanation saying I'm a student (unfortunately my idiotic school showed that my term ended the WEEK BEFORE FINALS... i.e. end of instruction... so technically they could've given me jury duty during finals? hahaha).

But who knows. Never got a response, never got in trouble, so I assume things worked..

And apparently the jury duty date got delayed till the day after I got back from vacation. I never knew until like a week later when Ic hecked the website as I was sorting my mail... Whoops?
