Sign up for the Army, that should get you out of it.

I would rather move to CANADA!

plus my sisters in the army, only one per household.

Coward.

Definately not interested in doing your civic duty huh?

You can get out of it since you are in school. I think that people who get out of it just because (who dont have a valid reason to not be there) need to be put in jail for a good 30 days or so.

I think it would be cool, but I have class.

If it was in the summer I would be all for.

just watch the movie jury duty, and maybe ernest goes to jail too (just for fun).
repeat everything you saw in the movie, during your actual tour.

you'll never be asked back again.

Walk in and start humping everyone's legs...even the judge. That should get you out of it...for at least 30 days...somewhere that you can be the humpee, instead of the humper...

How is 'I have class' any different than people in the real world who could say 'I have work'. Everyone has something. It's just a matter of whether or not you care about your civic duties or not.

I was summoned for jury duty during finals week of my senior year. Telling them that was more than enough to get out of it.

Just having class is like saying "but I'm scheduled to work that day." Your employer has provisions for you to be away from your job for jury duty. I don't know if students are exempt from serving, but if they are not then your school has a provision for it. If the summons has no clear way to contact them and ask, then call up your advisor and see what they say. That's what they're there for.

you can line up with the rest of the people to tell them why you can't be there for your duty... Being in college, they will likely excuse you, but you still have to show up in the first place.

the first day?

whom do I tell I cant do it ? a judge?
Try calling the courthouse and if you dont know the number then dial (area code)555-1212

For me, being a full-time student was not considered an excuse to get out of jury duty. However, it is an excuse to get jury duty postponed until you can do it, like over winter break. I'm sure they'll let you do it at a later time if you wish.

Santa Barbara Jury Summons: Come on this day, at this time, pay for your own parking and we might call your number.

I had a foreign language class ever day of the week in the morning, and it wasn't something I could really make up on my own so I called them up to ask what I should do. The lady states, "Being a student does not exempt you from jury duty." I point out that it's easy for her to say because she's not the student in question.

I offer to come in during the summer break and she says it's too far away. She suggests spring break instead, but I have (non-refundable) airline tickets overseas already.

She summarizes that I have only two choices: I can come in at my assigned time, or I can come in during spring break. I point out to her that it's not true; I can just not come in at all. She tells me that it's a misdemeanor or something, and I tell her to come get me and hang up.

I lived in Santa Barbara for two more years. Obviously they knew where I was living 'cause they sent me the jury summons. No one ever came.

I had jury duty a couple years ago. I just didn't go. I guess I could have got in trouble, but nothing happened.

If you want to get out of it the legal way, show up and act crazy or racist or tell them you're addicted to meth when you get evaluated.

For the record I've been on jury duty before and went. I was never selected to actually be on a jury. I think they just wanted me around for my fantastic fashion sense. I dunno.

I got a summons about a month ago and they tell me they pay you $40 per DAY. What a freakin joke. I told them that I am working on a big project with a tight due date and was able to postpone it to next year March. They have to start raising rates to at least $400 per day otherwise it's just a complete waste of time. I also don't believe in the civil jury system in that there should be qualification requirements to even have a say in something that would affect someone else's life. It's no longer year 1500 you know.

I did jury duty in Urbana, Illinois one summer for almost two weeks. It wasn't so bad. I showed up every day reading a copy of Catcher in the Rye and then switched to The Jungle when I got done with Salinger's book.

I got picked up for a grand theft auto trial (a ring of morons doing a bad job of stealing Caddies) and then a murder trial (a crack head goes out to buy a rock on Christmas night, they sell him soap, he goes back and the whole neighborhood kicks the crap out of him until dead).

It was interesting stuff, I got free lunch, they eventually paid me like $40 for two weeks of gas, I learned a lot about how (not) to steal cars, and the prosecuting attorney for both trials was this hot, hot, hot angry-looking redhead. She was amazing.

Did you RTFLetter? Here in WA the letter tells you exactly what to do if you want to try to be excused or to postpone your service.

RTFL FTW!

You can postpone it if you are a teacher or going to be gone or something like that. As a college student you could probably just postpone it until summer break. Either that or just try not showing up and see what happens.

Just attend the damn selection process. Chances are you won't even be selected to serve, but at least you can have the satisfaction of knowing you carried out your civic duty and help protect your rights as an American citizen. Is it really too much to ask?

if you ever face a trial, I bet you don't want to be judged by a jury of your peers.
