Are these folks that store their masks in lunch bags cleaning them at all? Anyone know what's the best way to clean or sanitize them if we've used them to go out?
I transferred alcohol into a spray bottle so I spray them inside and out before leaving overnight. The next day I rotate which mask I use and spray both when returning the next one for the night. Each mask is sprayed twice and left for two nights between uses.

Edit: I'm told spraying is a bad idea (thanks, brianhulk)

Yeah, city just declared a "state of emergency." It mimics what the state just did but let's act like we're doing something and scare people. Fucktards. I think we have 15 cases in the county.

As stated in the resolution, public parks will be open but all recreation buildings connected to the parks will be closed to the public through the state of emergency.

All recreation activities are canceled, including, but not limited to, city-sponsored sports league games, practices and tournaments, as well as city-permitted or licensed events.

All permits, licensing and payment transactions should be handled online, by US mail, or over the telephone, though the city will not at this time cancel in-person transactions. The drive-thru option for bill payments will still be available to the public.

Municipal Court is canceled through March 31. Any scheduled bench trials or matters involving juries will be rescheduled.

City staff is encouraged to maintain the federal Centers for Disease Control and Prevention suggestion of at least 6 feet of distance when interacting with customers if they have to meet in person.

Basic city functions will continue, including core Public Safety functions, pick up of garbage, recycling and yard debris, utility repairs and landscaping.
So do you have to close or can you stay open? You can say you're essential business. You're like a bank to the poor people.

Wait a minute... Fry's Electronics is still in business? All of their stores looked like they were looted before COVID-19, so I can only imagine what they look like now.

Tell me about it! I took this picture in late January:

TP memed it a little later after my Facebook friend pointed out that this was the networking section...

Is it vented with the one-way valve that a lot of the better masks have? Because I can see those being an issue if the mask is also supposed to keep the wearers from unknowingly infecting others. The vents allow unfiltered air to escape/exhaust.
Good point. I have bought 2 sets of N95, one in 2017 the other 2018 for wildfires. The first has no valve, the second one way valve and exhaling gas would not be filtered. I think the non-valved ones would be better both for preventing the wearer from being infected and obviously to keep the wearer from infecting others. I've not seen/heard this mentioned elsewhere.

At that time I paid per mask around $0.50 (off ebay).

That's exactly what I plan on saying. The same state division that license/oversee the banks also regulate me.

Myself, I've done nothing other than let them sit indoors untouched in a box for a week or more. Presumably any spores will have died by then... well, if what they say is true. IF.

"DO NOT use alcohol and chlorine [bleach]-based disinfection methods," they wrote. "These will remove the static charge in the microfibers in N95 facial masks, reducing filtration efficiency. In addition, chlorine also retains gas after de-contamination, and these fumes may be harmful."

This is going to be a problem for folks any distance from a hospital. The time between, "this sucks" and "I'm dying" is pretty short.
So, those people need a shorter fuse, so to speak. Yeah, it sucks. If that were me and I was 45 minutes away from a hospital I'd hope to have portable oxygen to tide me over in getting to a hospital, assuming that's available.

I wonder if ozone could work. An ozone generator can be fairly easily built using a source of high voltage. I guess the issue is figuring out what is enough. Oven might be the best bet assuming the masks don't degrade from the heat. I wonder if 70C is an official value that has been tested though, it seems kinda low. I've been doing 100C to be safe when decontaminating stuff. Though the past few things that came in were electronics and I didn't want to chance heat so I just let it sit for a couple days.

They like to argue they were switching to a consignment model. But assuming it's not because of a cash crunch, they're still done for. Even if they could restock all the shelves now, it's not like all those customers are coming back. They've moved on.

But not even hospitals have been able to get enough masks. Wouldn't advising everyone to start wearing them only exasperate the supply issue?

Civilians aren't going to be able to find surgical masks or N95s (in meaningful quantity) if they don't have them in their possession already. They were gone weeks ago.

The guidance is for cloth coverings.

At my hospital I am given 1 n95 mask that I have to to place in a paper bag at the end of my shift. And then use again the next day. My manager saw me wearing my 3M p100 respirator I brought from home and he said I couldn't use it when going to the patient floors. He said everyone must reuse the hospital provided mask. I told him that rule is ridiculous, as my 3m respirator has a much better seal and I have a bunch of replacement filters at home and I can actually clean the inside of my respirator. He said I know, but this is hospital policy right now and I have to follow it.

Total Bullshit!
That's crazy stuff. That's like my brother-in-law. He works for medical equipment company that provides surgery equipment so he's always going into different hospitals. He's been using regular surgical masks at the hospitals. I gave him couple extra 3M N95 masks I have so he could wear it when he visits the different hospitals. He said thanks but he told me he couldn't wear the 3M N95 mask because doctors and nurses would give him the evil eye and chase him out of the hospitals because they don't have enough N95 masks themselves. So he has to keep wearing the inferior surgical masks while at the hospitals to not piss them off and keep his job. I told him that's crazy. But that's the social pressure right now. If you're not medical professional and wear N95 masks, you're somehow selfish. Being proactive and prepared is now selfish.

EDIT: After hearing his story, I used my contact and I'm having 8 of the KF94 masks shipped to me direct from South Korea. I'm going to give him the KF94 masks. KF94 is South Korean version equivalent of our N95 rating mask. South Korea KF94 masks look different from our 3M N95 masks so US doctors and nurses won't recognize and give him shit for trying to protect himself and his family.

I saw fancy masks on Amazon. The ones that have the fancy knob. You can filter the air.

They all have bad revies and cost a lot of money. Like this one...

just tell them you had the mask from way back when you were doing some construction projects, and youve been wearing it for a month straight because thats all you have.

Surprised nobody is buying into the UV light sanitizers... granted, a lot of them seem pricey.

Oh, what I would pay to live in an alternate universe where we had a competent administration. It would be so interesting to study the differences in how everything plays out.

But hey, we're building a wall... Still right?

I've come to accept that social pressure & embarrassment are two of the strong human emotions out there that drive human behavior. And yet they're largely super invisible from the outside.

It's not for me. It's for my brother-in-law. He can't wear N95 masks in hospital because he's not medical professional. So I'm going to get him some KF94 masks from South Korea. That's like our N95 mask. But because the South Korea KF94 is styled differently, US doctors and nurses won't likely recognize the mask and will think it's just regular no rating mask. It's stupid I'm having to go through all this trouble for my brother-in-law when he has N95 masks he could use, but that's the reality we're living in right now. I'm doing this to protect my brother-in-law but also to protect my sister and their kids.

Here's how KF94 masks look.

I know there are a shitload of cases out there and stuff, but has there been confirmation on a lots of cases (or any) from people who are basically staying in their house and only running out to buy groceries and stuff?

The people I know that have it or had it, got it in a place with a lot of people before all of this social distancing and people staying at home started.
