New cases and deaths were down worldwide yesterday, which hopefully is reflective of all the lockdowns.
Most jurisdictions outside of China haven't been locked down long enough for us to say with any level of certainty that the epidemic's growth curve is being bent.

About the only place where there's some observed effect thus far is King County, WA.
Maybe you can count Italy as they are coming up on 3 weeks, and new confirmed cases are no longer growing.

If you're talking global cases and death toll, we're at the tip of the iceberg with many highly populous countries yet to experience the high growth phase of the pandemic. Any dip yesterday is maybe just a function of Sunday having less data to report (in some parts of the world, not the U.S.).

Quick question: Has anyone seen something as dumb as this in other countries? Serious question, maybe we just don't see it because we don't get international news?

As you can tell, freedom comes with the freedom to be stupid as well sadly.... which in all honesty, I'm all for.

The problem that even I (as a libertarian) have with freedom - is when your freedom to be stupid interferes with other's freedom. So as is the case with vaccines as well, people really need to be put in there place one of these days.

Thats only the worst assumption that can be made. what about the best? What if the WHO is making leaps and bounds in regards to data gathering and finding the answer to the virus, and that politically burning china now would be foolish?

The problem these days is everything is seen as black and white. In reality it never is.
Here is an interesting article on the Director-General of the WHO: https://www.cfr.org/blog/who-and-china-dereliction-duty

Italy and even Spain are showing leveling off and slowing trends. I guess I can't really prove right now that lockdowns are the primary factor behind those trends, but I would assume they are playing a large part regardless.

And yes, globally we are at the tip of the iceberg. Many countries are just beginning.

Not just India with a huge population, other countries are having big problems too. I saw a story online earlier about South Africa, how the government is demanding everyone to stay inside and in the story, hundreds of people were packing next to each other like sardine to line up to go inside a grocery store at a poor township outside the capital. A lady was telling the the reporter how it was bad and if just one of them was sick, almost all of them would be sick too. One lone police officer tried in vain to tell everyone to have some space but no one listened to him.

In another story, how Italians are about to run out of food. One father with a little girl was online and said the girl only had 2 slides of bread recently and almost nothing left inside the house and he said there would be a revolution if things would not get better. Scary indeed.

As I said before, this could be bad for Italy - https://www.bloomberg.com/news/arti...grip-in-south-with-fears-of-looting-and-riots

Potential for more/widespread to other countries if this virus thing does not get better?

One of the craziest ass stories I heard was from my daughter yesterday. She works part-time at a nursing home in dietary. She's 21, does it part-time while "going to school/now of course remote" (and this is the cream of the crop type place for nursing homes, big bux rent).

Anyways she told me they are working on bringing outside patients into this environment and forming a "corona wing."

Then she tells me they have to wear face masks all the time, but the face masks need to last seven days.

I asked her why they are dragging in people (offloaded) and her reply was "probably money." Census count is everything in that business. Smart gal.

But just a reminder that there are millions of people on the frontline. And to be fair, getting into the the place is harder than breaking out of prison. But still, ugh. Multiply it by a thousand other places.

I think we all saw that back on the 17th. Several of those kids have since made apologies.

No I understand, I wasn't talking about them specifically - just wondering what we're going to do about broad stupidity as a problem that is clearly effecting others.

If a pandemic occurs in 5 years, I'm pretty sure there would be another round of stupid entitled teenagers to repeat history.

If you want to wage war on human stupidity, good luck and god bless. May I offer you a toothbrush for a lance?

Officially got furloughed today. "Non-essential." I could make a strong case otherwise but the weekly assistance is going to be more than I'd make normally anyway.

I think they meant to do it Saturday since my weekly schedule had changed to "N/A" when I came in Sunday. I was off Saturday and that's when they furloughed the two part-timers we recently hired for the same position. Everyone had said they only planned to furlough part-time employees then redistribute their hours to the full-time employees like me now that we have over-all reduced operating hours.

They got rid of the off-duty police officers Saturday too even though they stopped a grab and run attempt the day before and the company is still keeping doors open to the public. Sounds like a recipe for disaster to me.

They need to start showing a breakdown of deaths and illnesses by age. A real number, not a percentage. Let's watch those young people numbers grow. Maybe it'll hit home for them at some point.

We officially have a case in my county in WV. Apparently they were out of the country and have been self-quarantined. That's all the details we have now. This is just wonderful to hear on the day I had to go out. /s

So my son has been doing an advanced math group assignment and the prelims are in, but he only has like 30's to talk to me a couple times a day.

The projections are that 60 to 80% of the population is infected and peak for worst-case is May 15th with 40% of the population infected on that date. Best case, and I mean everything goes perfectly everywhere is later in the year but only 6% will be infected at any one time.

As far as mortality goes best fairy tale scenario is 200k dead (Fauci is telling only part of the truth here because, well you can guess). Worst case is 1.6 to 2.2 million. I'd expect that a split between the difference is likely with 800k-1.2m deaths.

And a cheery day to you too!

Ehm .. this caught my eye

"A supervisor urged surgeons at Columbia University Irving Medical Center in Manhattan to volunteer for the front lines because half the intensive-care staff had already been sickened by coronavirus. "

It may not be too surprising given they are surrounded by it constantly, however that is still a different number from 80/20.

Just been informed to be ready to report to work for unknown disaster related duties. We've setup a command center to field phone calls etc. and apparently only 18 volunteers are helping out. Normally I wouldn't hesitate, but I have diabetes so most likely I wouldn't be called on.

They threw away the most valuable data they could have gotten by ignoring Taiwan (to appease China) while China was still covering up. They'll never let Taiwan join WHO as long as China is such a huge financial contributor.
Also, Taiwan took the outbreak seriously and responded more quickly than any other country. We should be looking to Taiwan's example. Not refusing to acknowledge Taiwan and share valuable data.
