Guys... Just so we are all on the same page. I don't believe that Elon Musk is smarter than any of us, but I do believe it's healthy to ask the basic questions. I believe this is far worse than the flu and that we're looking at exponential growth that's a function of time. That said, it appears the worst case scenario (when the dust clears ~2 years from now) is ~2% of the entire US population dies. Thats about 6.6 million people. That's horrendous and eclipses the flu by~36X (normalized to 1 year). That said, the majority (not all) are deaths from already sick people who are elderly, etc... Many other diseases kill about as many folks over the same amount of time (and don't primarily pick on those with underlying medical weaknesses). Do I believe there needs to be a stiff response to C19? Absolutely. It all just begs the question at what % (and demographic) do we do things like "close down the economy"... Our response as human beings seems inconsistent.
...except it will be a lot more than 2% if we don't "over react" (as he describes it). A LOT higher. Collateral deaths from otherwise unrelated issues (shootings stabbings, car accidents, etc) will be through the roof if we let healthcare get overwhelmed with old people suffering COVID-19. Younger people who would have survived COVID-19 with a bit of help will also die, causing the death rate for COVID-19 itself to also spike.

The virus does not survive well on cardboard so I don't think that's an issue, what is an issue is the treatment of those workers, afraid of losing their jobs they come into work visibly sick and push through. Of course they are busy as hell as so many turn to online shopping to avoid crowded stores. just today I needed to pick up some scripts at Walgreens and as I passed by Walmart the parking lot was almost completely full, never seen that even during black Friday events.

I have a feeling people will finally take this a bit more seriously by the end of this week.

I sure hope so, and I sure hope my coworkers are taking it seriously and not going out, because I'm stuck working with them. I head back to work tomorrow.

Statistically we're probably fine here as there's only been one case so far, but given that person came from out of town on a plane, everybody else on that plane probably got it too and just have not been officially diagnosed yet.

Some new pick up lines developing during this whole thing: "Hi I'm [name], I just broke up with my girlfriend when she called 911 because she ran out of toilet paper."

38k cases with 400 dead in the United States. Dang 🙁

New York has over half. This just shows that the virus has been circulating in the US for quite a while.

We will quickly exceed everyone else in total infected. Hell New York is on pace to exceed every other country on its own within a week or two.

Why not just let it set for a day or so before opening? That's what I have been doing.
That figure is probably overstating how long the virus would be viable in a real-world setting, and it's not clear how many virus particles you need to pick up to get sick (is it a really tiny amount, like norovirus, or does the exposure have to be a little bigger). Packages get left in the sun (UV is bad for virus stability), low humidity environments (eg, outside in the cold). I think if you just follow some basic precautions, you should be okay: just wash your hands after opening the box and don't rub the box all over your face.

It's more than concern if Corona Beer causes Coronavirus. You have to avoid Gatorade, it causes Aids. edit - not mine, it's from Jimmy Kimmel.

Any good reads on estimates/predictions for the future? My latest worry has been how long we're going to be isolated from the rest of the world. Even if/when we get this under control, we can't really open borders unless the rest of the world does the same. Is that going to last until we have a treatment and/or vaccine?

I know we aren't going to get a good picture for a long time but I'm most interested in how bad Venzuala has gotten. Heck, telling people to self-isolate there is basically telling them that they have to starve to death. 🙁

Next up, India. They're basically like China with even less ability to stop the spread with authoritarianism. It's probably ravaging them right now. In the end I expect it will end up worse than China (definitely worse than Italy).

Third: Cuba. It seems they're sending humanitarian aide to Italy and I absolutely dread what's going to happen when they need it for themselves. 🙁

Last, North Korea. Doubt the full picture will ever be seen.

DigDog, your man on the street from Argentina, reports that
the Argentinian president is considering issuing a decree of Martial Law for the next few weeks. All flight to and out of Argentina will be cancelled.

fuck. my. life.

breaching quarantine can lead to arrest and detention to up to TWO FUCKEN YEARS. https://www.aljazeera.com/news/2020...tine-argentina-jail-time-200318160931683.html

jesus all i wanted was some H&B. i don't want to spend the rest of my life in Argentina.

I don't know about Venezuela, but my wife is Brazilian and has lots of family there that they keep in touch with.

In general, they aren't taking this pandemic stuff seriously at all and are giving a general message that it is overhyped.

Maybe people who are old, fat, heavy drug users (including smokers and alcoholics) need to do themselves a favor by self-isolating. The rest of us shouldn't have to be inconvenienced because the virus has their number.
Proof you're ignorant and have not basic human compassion. You're also egregiously self righteous. You don't want to be inconvenienced. If you have reason to believe you may be shedding this virus, you should isolate yourself until you are not. Otherwise you are very likely making someone else come down with it, in fact that average person who gets infected passes it on to 2 1/2 other people. One out of five people who get it get hospitalized. There are not going to be enough beds to go around. Nowhere near enough ventilators. You say, fuck them, they are not fit like me, haven't been living cleanly like me, their lookout, not mine. You know what? There's some chance, not meager, that you will find yourself needing hospitalization, etc. from this virus. Don't be so goddamn smug.

You're setting the example that may lead young people in 30-40 years to blow off a corona virus epidemic. They'll spread the disease so fast that the hospitals will be overwhelmed and you'll die alone. Or maybe you will be the lucky one and get on a ventilator but still die a horrible death, writhing in pain, trying to tear out your ventilation tubing while too delirious to know what you're doing because of the drugs, restrained on your bed, then finally choking and drowning in your lung fluids, to eventually pass out and die. Too bad you weren't as healthy as the young party crowd.
