I am really enjoying the development and response to this whole thing. I had to find something to like about it.

Found this last weekend https://nextstrain.org/ncov, it shows the genetic development of the virus and as a result how it is spreading. It shows there are two versions of the virus going around Seattle, one closely linked to the original guy that brought it from Wuhan and another closely linked to the current Euro version.

This is an interesting study that discovered two different strains of the virus. Apparently, the strain that first emerged in Wuhan was more aggressive, but the spread of that strain is now slowing down. The second strain is an evolved form of the original strain; it's spread is accelerating, but it is a less aggressive version of the virus.

This is evidence of at least one mutation, but I'm sure many more will follow considering the rapid pace of reproduction going on.

I'm no evolutionary biologist/virologist, but wouldn't it make sense for the virus to evolve into a less lethal form analogous to the flu? The death of the host isn't exactly the best route for sustained survival.

Well, yeah, I think that is how it usually works out - the viruses that rapidly kill the host don't get to spread and carry on circulating for the long term.

(I guess the whole 'zombie' thing is an inventive way round that problem, from the virus's point of view).

Well, it's definitely here - multiple cases in London now.

So hard to know how concerned to be - as far as I can make out it all depends on what strain it puts on the hospital system.

Can't say I'm impressed by the state's response - to try and persuade everyone to change the habits of millennia and to never touch their own faces.

First death in California. I'm sad, I live in California. In San Diego.

So I guess it's just a matter of a few days it may be noticeably worse in San Diego. Edit - there's 1 case in San Diego in the news but don't know if the virus left the person's system yet. And keep in mind it's not a surprise case, it's one of the American evacuees from China so it was all monitored from the flight out of China to San Diego. Ok found an article about the San Diego case back on Feb 10 -

If you are 60+ then this thing sucks. I have sent my parents to the cabin, that will minimize exposure a great deal.

yea its crazy how they just took everyone back and told them to self quarantine. im sure they didnt and now its spread everywhere so fast, they said they had 200 freaking test kits for all of california. that was last week but seriously wtf are we doing? 200 test kits????? CT scans seem to be 97% accurate not sure what the test kit accuracy is.

i know costco was sold out of water and had no jasmine rice, i went to the asian market and bought 400 pounds of jasmine rice and 100 pound sticky rice (everyone was going crazy buying rice haha) :p i should be good along with my family and close friends if they refuse to stock up. Bought all the ground turkey walmart had and froze it :p (50 pounds?) vacuum sealing some steaks later at 2.99 a pound for tritip, i like to put the in soup a few days after bbq if i dont get to eat it all. tastes so yummy! i forget what my mask count is, prob around 600 masks, i feel like i will get the virus for sure but just stocking up for fun or in case of a quarantine where i cant go buy food, (i live in rural area and work in medical field and in my 30's wife is in 20's and have kids in school i told them to wear masks today but im not sure how great they will be at that... :X)

I just did a food inventory after going an entire week of not visiting the grocery store - I used to go about every other day since they are within walking distance.

I now know that one trip to the store to obtain fresh produce can go about 7-10 days (for a small family of 3) if I am smart about meal prep. I've never meal prepped before but it's been time to learn: I'll make the first 3-5 days worth of food right away, and then make the second batch just as things start losing their freshness. Soups go a very long way. Beyond that I'd have to get creative with a thaw schedule. I have no idea how long that can go - I estimate about another 7-14 days - but I hope I do not have to find out. Because the only thing beyond that is the rice and bean and pasta and spaghetti sauce diet. But overall I'm pretty proud we hardly put a dent into our non-perishables. It was a good practice run.

I aim to go to the grocery store once a week during off hours so long as things seem relatively contained. But I'm not sure how to proceed once numbers of infected start moving into the thousands (within LA alone). That'll probably be within 2-3 weeks... but hopefully warmer weather helps a little.

Don't mean to make light of the situation but considering I live in California in a declared state of emergency I wonder if the Governor will issue wacky rules like having us change our underwear every three hours.

And I've been to Brazil 3+ times, it's a crap hole regardless of what a couple downtown cities tell you ;)

Meh. I've been to Curitiba. It was pretty nice. I liked how accessible it was to foot traffic.

Maybe. Some pathogens don't seem to evolve that way.

Kinda figured

https://www.bloomberg.com/news/arti...ource=twitter&utm_campaign=socialflow-organic

The Trump administration won’t be able to meet its promised timeline of having a million coronavirus tests available by the end of the week, senators said after a briefing Thursday from health officials.

“There won’t be a million people to get a test by the end of the week,” Republican Senator Rick Scott of Florida said. “It’s way smaller than that. And still, at this point, it’s still through public health departments.”

Scott and other lawmakers said the government is “in the process” of sending test kits out and people still need to be trained on how to use them.

“By the end of the week they’re getting them out to the mail,” Republican Senator James Lankford of Oklahoma said. “It’s going to take time to be able to get them, receive them, re-verify them and then be able to put them into use.”

Where is the lecture about bottled soft drinks versus a Soda Stream or whatever at home? ;)

easy: don't drink softdrinks. don't drink energy drinks. don't drink all that garbage legal poison that people are addicted to, and also comes in unfriendly plastic containers.

There are 2.5 options for adult humans:

1. booze (in all the forms)
2. water, straight out of the tap.
0.5. coffee because sure, why not?

sack up, humans.

Well, unlike a glass or plastic cup, I can take bottled water anywhere without risk of it getting knocked over or having cat hairs or other stuff settle inside. I can leave it in the car and finish it the next day. I can freeze it or throw it in the fridge at work without worrying about cracking or losing an expensive and unsanitary refillable bottle.

Yes: "unsanitary." The doctor complaining about Yeti cups comes to mind as well as a cat water fountain which grows mildew if you don't clean it out every few weeks (not to mention all the little "floaters"). The aerator part of the Brita tap filter on my mother's sink was always full of mildew when I'd check. D: I made her get rid of it.

Bottled water rocks! The plastic is a byproduct and does not drive oil production so we may as well use it. Heck, I often refill them by adding cool water-fountain water to my half-empty lukewarm bottle. I can dispose of it properly when I am done and don't have to keep track of it until I get home like I would with a refillable sports bottle. Unlike wax paper cups, the bottles are extremely recyclable and I don't need to waste resources cleaning it. When I finish a small fountain drink that was mostly ice and realize I'm still thirsty I often find I have some bottled water left in my car or office. I pour into the ice and continue before I toss the cup out.

Win win win win win win win. :)

I do think it's silly to buy 20oz water bottles from vending machines considering that a flavored drink costs the same and I hate plastic bottle litterbugs as much as the next guy... regardless of what's inside.

When I finish a small fountain drink that was mostly ice and realize I'm still thirsty I often find I have some bottled water left in my car or office or wherever I was having such a lunch. I pour into the ice and continue refreshing myself before I toss the cup. If I can't Recycle my paper cup I may as well Reuse it. :)
