NON_POLITICAL China Coronavirus THREAD

A vaccine isn't going to be available for at least June/July, and that is early estimates. In actuality, it will probably be at least 1 year.

Yeah that's what I've been reading 🙁

Sadly both my parents passed away in the last few years but my MIL is still around and I'm concerned for her.

Also I have a couple drivers fighting cancer who are no doubt at elevated risk.

I'm sorry to hear that. My in-laws are currently on vacation in Aruba, and they'll be flying into Chicago next weekend. I kind of warned them against it, but they were set on going and said this whole thing isn't a big deal and is just being "politicized." They are both in their upper 60's but relatively healthy.

I have to go to a conference in Chicago tomorrow. I was kind of hoping it would get canceled, but alas, it seems they are going to send me into the belly of the beast. They tried to comfort everyone by setting up hand sanitizer stations everywhere.

The CDC sent a NYC man without testing: Link.
Here's his story on Reddit too.

I don't know what's more scary at this point, the virus itself or the inability of our higher ups to handle this or cover things up. They could at least admit being backlogged on test kits and saving them for more extreme cases, but yet across the country it seems like there are people such as those in WA confirmed with minor symptoms...

There's no help for this really. Making a one or two hundred million tests kits is not feasible.

I mean there is some middle ground between testing the entire county and just a few hundred people because we screwed up.

The South Koreans have tested over 100K already.

I don't recall if it was this thread or somewhere else I read, but the actual air in Wohan has the virus in it now, like it's high enough to register. That's scary as it means it can spread just from the wind at this point. Not sure how high it can go but if it happens to get to the jetstream it could literally go global. That's without people. Even a full stop on international air travel would not stop it at that point.

Wonder how they will go about cleaning up the air, and every surface in the city as even once all the actual people are cured, if the virus is still around people are just going to keep getting it. Do you just water bomb the whole city with Purel? lol. I guess it won't be as big of a deal once a vaccine is out though but they could still be a while before it's massively available.

Erm, most virii and bacteria don't live very long outside of their normal environment. You can have a virus in a particulate of water/snot/whatever in the air, but it's not gonna live long when its temperature changes (read: drops), or when it dries out, or whatever.

It's not just an amorphous miasma. These are living things that don't live long in abnormal environments.

Don't they continuously reproduce though? So while older ones might die off there will always be newer ones and they'll still multiply. Or would that process be hindered as well?

Definitely be hindered, considering virii need living cells to reproduce (that's a thing i remember from biology, right?)

Even so, you can't reproduce fast enough to outpace like, a drop in temperature from ~100f to ambient air (much lower). Everything in those droplets dies in minutes at most.

the best one, in my opinion, would be the one claiming that it's somehow caused by 5G phone networks

My favorite conspiracy theory so far is out of China (I believe) and is disturbingly plausible in a tinfoil hat kind of way.

Supposedly underpaid techs in the Wuhan lab sold animals used in Corona-virus experiments to the local "wet-market" leading to the outbreak.

😱 😵 🙄

That's good to know then, I thought they were pretty much self sustaining in pretty much any environment, even space.

Trump is going to hold rallies despite Coronavirus scare. Wow. I would not be going to anywhere that has a lot of people.

Hmmmm... no I think all Trumps supporters getting together is a fantastic idea! Make America Great !!!

After all the Corona-virus IS a political hoax so not like they'll actually catch anything!

😛 😉

Cunningly combines 'conspiracy' with 'screw-up'! Best of both worlds.

Let Trump's people buy into his "nothing to see here". Since they believe everything he says by all means let's encourage them.

Now it's a self correcting problem.

Millions of mainland chinese firms face collapse if banks don't act --

"Many of China’s businesses were already grasping for lifelines before the virus hit, pummeled by a trade war and lending crackdown that sent economic growth to a three-decade low last year.

At most risk are the labor-intensive catering and restaurant industries, travel agencies, airlines, hotels and shopping malls, according to Lianhe Rating."

If we have a zombie outbreak I'm going to my basement!

Honestly, reading the news I'm constantly reminded of the sort of opening-credits newspaper/tv broadcast montages I feel I've seen in so many zombie and other post-apocalypse movies. It's just unnervingly similar.

(I said this already I think, but your comment reminded me again!)
