Well, I probably have 10+ lb. of salt here, iodized. Bought a case of Leslie at Costco some years ago. I figure "sea salt" is a gourmet ghetto ruse.

Is salt all I need in an electrolyte? I could always add some to water!

Just get some light salt and some magnesium citrate. It's essentially the same thing... electrolytes to better absorb the water.

It was one of his earliest books. Well, he did write under other names before that but Andromeda Strain was even before Westworld (Chricton's early '70s movie). Decades later he took another crack at the concept of an amazing sci-fi theme park gone wrong and we got Jurassic Park.

His decades-later take on the threat of a microbiological outbreak escaping containment was a similar step-up but it took things in yet another direction you probably weren't expecting from that scenario: "Prey" featured engineered "nanobots" that self-replicate/evolve beyond the confines of their engineering and escape. It's a good read but not really relevant to this outbreak.

He created the TV series "ER" and a lot of his books focus on his intimate knowledge of medical science but, yeah, neither Andromeda Strain nor Prey covers a natural epidemic.

Yeah, and it's required for neurotransmitters to work properly. This is why water toxicity is a thing, like when that woman died after competing in a "Hold your wee for a Wii" contest/competition where they forced everyone to keep drinking water. Her electrolytes got so low in her diluted bloodstream that her brain and nervous system couldn't function properly. She peed herself, lost the contest, then died, all in an attempt to get her kids the Wii they wanted. 🙁

Wow ... must have chugged a shit-ton of water and/or had some nutrition issues going in I would think.

A few times after a really long bike ride in the summer I've felt like a Gatorade literally brought me back to life though. Perhaps that was more accurate then I thought?

A concerned listener called the DJs (it was a radio station thing) before it happened and warned of that exact danger. Unfortunately for their contestants the ball was already rolling and they didn't take the warning seriously enough to end the contest.

As I recall, they all had gallon jugs and were progressively forced to drink excessive amounts to ensure that they would not be able to hold it for long.

US never really had to deal with SARS/MERS and Bird flu. But they'll learn. This is not the end of the world. Everything will be fine eventually. If this isn't contained, then it just becomes this year's flu. Really bad and strong flu that kills more people and infects more people than regular flu but nothing world ending. Eventually, people will get tired of the news headlines and people won't care much about new case numbers. At certain point, you become numb to it and the market will too.

Maybe. Like I've stated earlier. It's not going to end the world, or kill 100 million people. But, the impact that this could have on economies has the potential to be life altering. Eventually something had to give anyway. The news, especially CNN love to hype these type of things. We shall see...
 
This could start affecting computer parts too. I imagine a lot of other stuff too as local stocks start to deplete.


But most importantly, is a gingerbread man made of house or is a gingerbread house made of flesh?
 
I am glad some more people are finally seeing the same thing some of us have for the last several weeks. Makes me feel less crazy.

Still hope I am crazy though.

Curious, why can South Korea test that many per day & people are saying the US can only do 100 per day? I'd have to re-read the thread to find the posts that say this.
