Hong Kong medical offical warns 45m plus people could die, 60% of the world pop could be infected. That's a strong statement. And, if true is a lot of deaths.

TBH, without looking at the link, that does not surprise me based on the actuality I've been seeing on TV news. The Chinese are clearly in panic balls-out mode... for weeks now. They are way beyond concerned.

Edit: That link is phenomenal. The best I've seen about the outbreak.

Fresh off the block from Los Alamos Labs:
R0 value estimate within China updated to between 4.7 and 6.6. That places it somewhere around Mumps, well past even the 1918 influenza strain.

Note that R0 values can differ depending on the location due to things like climate, quarantine efficacy, etc. An R0 value that high on something that can kill ~4% of infected is bad though. That's a doubling of infected every 2.4 days.

well bad news, i hear today that in sihanoukville cambodia that people are being silenced about the outbreak, all the charts say 1 case in phnom penh but word on the street is that there ALOT of cases in sihanoukville and that anyone that posts on facebook or social media is rounded up by police and there posts are deleted under order of the prime minster etc. (i dont know what to believe) i know i have tickets in march and thousands of $$ in medial / different supplies to bring to my family there but it sounds like we are going to just change the vacation to somewhere else not in asia and spend 300$ per ticket to change the dates on them. (who knows what will be happening by then maybe even worse or maybe a cure who knows! I do know that 3000 chineese flew to cambodia from wuhan 1 day before it was locked down 1500 going to sihanoukville and 1500 going to siam reip. DAMmmn chineese didnt lock down fast enough, read 30,000 went to Thailand / Singapore before the lockdown too from wuhan. i have close to 300 n95 and 300 surgical masks was going to bring too, even was tempted to hand them out to the people next to me on the flight and use a thermal camera to check temps.. (paranoid ya?) what to do what to do.. still have few weeks before the flight is scheduled korea air said i had to tell them by march 11 if im going.

All the positive vibes put out by the Chinese gov about this thing being under control seem...somewhat oversold.

Yeah China is finally adding the clinically diagnosed to the totals not just the confirmed. I LOL'ed after everyone saying look the numbers are going down the last two days!!

So apparently someone crazy dumped gasoline on themself, then wrapped themself with fire crackers, and then went to officials with a lighter asking them to let him celebrate his birthday at a banquet hall regardless of the ban. The officials got him arrested.

Are these new cases just from the last 24 hours, or are they cumulative cases that were not diagnosed since day 1?

China records over 14,800 new coronavirus infections in one day

Sooooo anyone else suddenly get interested in prepping?

So many thoughts about this...first, those poor people. 1,300 people killed worldwide with over 60,000 people infected. Growing from country to country now. Second, I wonder how the U.S. is going to handle it if it does a rapid expansion here. I'm definitely feeling the itch to stock up on food & cleaning supplies. Yikes.

The virus has not even spread a lot in Russia, Mongolia, or even Hong Kong. Just a mere handfull (when compared to mainland China) of cases in Hong Kong. Majority of the cases outside of China regaional territory, is only growing under quarantine conditions. Thus I do not think yet that it is a very urgent health crisis yet inside the United States.

The death count is also very, very likely to be much higher than just over 1,300. Crematoriums are reporting that there are dead bodies coming directly from residents and not hospitals, which means those that died in their own homes weren't part of the count of the infected which means they were not part of the count of deaths caused by the corona virus.

My sense of panic is all but gone now that China has released "somewhat more realistic" numbers. We still know they're lying and the numbers are far worse. But it's a start and that gives me hope this shall pass. First step to any recovery is to admit you have a problem. I like the urgency and actions taken by the world governments in recent days.

That number is incuding those that have not yet been diagnosed.

We know that the question is if that number is for all current people that have been clinically diagnosed or just the new ones from yesterday?

And I'm guessing that is why there was a jump in deaths yesterday as well, they are now counting the clinically diagnosed deaths as well. But that number is certainly just the new ones from yesterday so that lends support to those 14k cases being new as of yesterday as well. Either way I am sure both numbers are lower than the true numbers whatever they are.

Coronavirus cases spike as China sacks senior officials:

Death toll spikes: China's Hubei province announced 242 new deaths from the novel coronavirus, which is known officially as Covid-19, today — twice as many as on the previous day. New infections there jumped by more than 14,000.

The true impact of this is yet to come imo. I don't believe this is going to turn into a massive global death plague but once we start seeing the results of China not making our stuff in the next couple weeks people are going to freak. As has been shown repeatedly once shortages start happening people panic and buy all stocks creating even more shortages. I believe the global economy is about to take a huge hit.

I was talking to a supplier yesterday about a product they were pushing that is made in Hubei province. I asked them how long they expected to actually have any product to sell and they seemed genuinely shocked once they realized they are not getting any more of it for a while.

An NPR special I listened to today suggested that all of the new cases and deaths reported yesterday were all from the past 24 hours. I still haven't seen anything that proves or disproves that, but if it's true, this thing is still spreading unabated. NPR also said that China's other provinces haven't yet adopted the new clinical methodology, meaning their case and death numbers are likely far higher as well, and I would highly suspect many cities like Shanghai will suffer similar fates to Wuhan.

Also of note, Singapore and Hong Kong are looking more and more likely to be the first cities outside of China with full blown outbreaks. Singapore is a hot and humid city, leading me to believe that summer may not work as a natural barrier of transmission as it does with influenza.

I'm thinking the travel restrictions and quarantines will buy the United States some time, during which more can be learned about the virus and how to treat it. I doubt the United States will be able to prevent outbreak much longer, and definitely not before a vaccine is developed.
