restaurant owners have to pay leases on their properties among all the other expenses. I think we need some cash infusion on the banks and property owners to cover such leases and expenses for the next 2 months, on top of some juice for employees.

In the public interest, it is absolutely vital that a lot of these places shut down indefinitely, but such places also need support and incentive to do so in the meantime. This is why government exists--outside of recommendations and mandates to protect public safety, we need mechanisms to maintain ways of life for every person effected in order to realize best possible results--especially those that are most effected.

Governments are great at mandating rules that address a direct problem. Simple. X needs money, so let's give X money in the form of Y.

What they are GOD AWFUL FUCKING HORRIBLE at - is understanding the subsequent indirect things that occur because of their direct rule implementation. You always have to think about and address those - or you're going to end up fucking things up more. It's 2nd-grade level shit to understand that for every action there is a reaction. Unsurprisingly, what government is too inept to realize is the direct economical affects of this that will become PERMANENT if not quickly addressed. Naturally what happens is the standard middle class are the ones that get forgotten about to take the brunt of the damage because they are less likely to bitch.

Shopping hours only for the elders and disables - https://www.cnn.com/2020/03/16/business/coronavirus-grocery-elder-hours-trnd/index.html

To be fair, I have been to Kroger and Wal Marts several times in the last few days and while the stores were a mess but everyone was decent. No yelling and bad manner as Black Friday sale. Hopefully things would stay the same down the road.
watch the lawsuits come. sounds like super discrimination if only elderly can shop. im disabled i can only shop for 1 hour out of the day on one of my lunch breaks.

It says "elderly and disabled", so if you're disabled, you should be included?
It's in Australia anyway, they may not be as sue-happy.

This is why it's a good time to go on some kind of diet. Get rid of the crap food. Get down to basics. Rice, Oats, Chicken (if you can find it), coffee, peanut butter, frozen brocolli, few other basic items. Use those items only. You'll get fit, healtheir, etc.
This is me right now. GF and I bought a whole pile of meats to freeze, and basic goods like flour, sugar, beans, couscous, rice, lots of potatoes/onions, etc. We're back on basic ideals of sustenance and have started cooking a whole lot more than we have before.

We've also started a workout regimen, which we've wanted to do for years but now we actually have the time to. Gonna probably come out of this 20lbs lighter and actually in shape again.

Some stores in the US are doing it too - https://www.nbclosangeles.com/news/...ry-shopping-hours-socal-panic-buying/2329889/

Since the stores won't ask for ID to enter as an elder, I can see some smart-ass with cosplay make up do a live web special as shopping elder.

Anyone tracking the coronavirus updates that Bing has displayed, showing total cases/deaths/recoveries?

Yesterday it showed 93 US deaths, but today it's down to 85. I've been tracking it daily and that makes no sense, unless the WHO/CDC/whatever other agency decided causes of death were not attributable to C19.

Or want to get paid
Saw a story on TV the other day about an experimental vaccine they've just cooked up that's for a virus similar but not equal to covid-19 (i.e. far less dangerous) that they think could work for covid-19. They advertised for people to volunteer, offering $4500 and they got in very short order about double the number of people they needed.

This is a Coronavirus winter, and this is the first week. America is not prepared.

I thought that this comment is so key. If this is with us for the foreseable future, stockpiling food and toilet paper isn't going to matter much. Eventually, you will run out. Trump has even said that this could potentially last into Aug. There is so much that we don't know. My question is are you prepared for this to last 6 months or longer? You have to wonder what would the US response be if this is with us for a long time. Do we just give up, resume our way of life and let the cards fall where they may? Like the flu, eventually our body will develop natural anitbodies to this virus. We could potentially see some horrible things in that time. Or, do we still fight this virus. A 1 month hiatus from activity is one thing. 3 months? 6 months? Longer? That's a scary thought.

Anyone see the piece about possible DIY vaccines for hobbyist biolabs? ;)

Yeah, a bit overly optimistic, me thinks.

Aw man, you almost had it...almost. that one series of rational, potential adult discussion, then you blew it! :D
its weird how this always starts with a simple discussion about maybe what we can do, to then you instantly turning it into the same tired blanket assumption that ALL GOVERNMENT BAD WHEN IT DOES THE THIGNS THAT I SAID IT SHOULD DO!

why do you do this? IT was good for about two posts, then you flipped your switch again. lol. nothing that you said really makes sense, because it assumes every time something is implemented, there will only ever be worse results, in very many ways, from the one singular decision...for every single decision made. It's like you can't look at an issue at a time and understand that not all are the same. It's like you simply don't care about the complexity of things, and that complexities are different form issue to issue. Or, that oftentimes, these unwanted effects are often addressed. It's like you shut down the moment something bad happens and determine, in your mind, that is the steady state of the thing for the rest of eternity.

That is never true. But I wonder why you cling to this belief like budweiser-shits at the end of a redneck's rectum. :D

no, that's not at all what this is. It's "time rationing" for specific populations at a time, which is exactly what we should be doing.

What I've heard from my family living in SF is that stores clean and sterilize, then open only for the elderly and most susceptible, then the younger crowds can come in, limited numbers at a time.

weird how you would interpret what you did from what this is.

Sources I've seen say 94 US deaths or 95 as of this moment. I am assuming such sources just aggregate various news reports so aren't always going to agree. Plus they probably make mistakes. Unfortunately I didn't bother keeping the screenshot of the short moment that worldometer suddenly decided nearly a million people had died in Vatican City. Someone mistyping, I suppose.

The opinion of authorities here seems to be it will likely go on till spring 2021, i.e. at least a year.

Oh come on now - name me some government solution to a problem that didn't subsequently end with the problem moving elsewhere?

Cash for clunkers - was meant to get people to incentivize driving more fuel efficient. Didn't happen.
2008 Great recession - Tons of rules to potentially try to stop this again in the future.... Housing bubble is bigger than ever - banks have only gotten bigger (As if too big to fail wasn't a big problem before)

Also how did I blow the conversation? C'mon now ol' chap, you can continue to have a discussion here and based on my last post.

cash for clunkers: put more EV and hybrid on the road that otherwise would have existed. When global oil prices plummeted--a cartel-owned pricing thing that no democratic government anywhere can control--stupid americans went on buying more stupid, pointless, SUVs that not one single american needs. There is no policy that can fix inbred stupidity like that, and I'm sure you realize that. besides, cash for clunkers was never going to be the one thing that fixes everything. One would hope you are able to understand that? ...or do you need to create a never-existed hope for that in order to argue against it? Anyway, it never resulted in worse, failed outcomes. Least not that had anything to with the policy itself.

TARP and 2008 bailout--many would argue that not nearly enough cash was spend initially, which is probably true. I mean, if you want to assign blame to results 10 years out, you might want to ask why it only took 2 years...TWO YEARS--for republicans to start complaining that Dodd-Frank was destroying their noble capitalism and their systematic dissolution of every single lever put in place to stop the exact same thing from happening. Every single thing.
