And why does it not pass "the smell test" for you?

It seems that many are contagious before they show symptoms. That would make it much easier to spread, since they'll go out, thinking they are just fine.

Yep, and they said measurements of the virus count were up to 10,000 more than SARS pre-incubation. That's hella contagious!

Same friend texted me this:

"So at (the hospital) we have 3 different ICUs. It totals to I think 35 beds, so that's 35 vented ICU rooms. There are regular days where 35 of 35 beds are taken just due to normal sick people. If we get even just 10 real sick cases here we are F***'d. Especially because these covid patients are vented for long periods."

And

"And they wanted these virus patients to be 1:1 ratio with one ICU nurse? We barley can staff a 6:1 ratio. And then as staff get sick and/or quarantined it'll be even worse. We are so dysfunctional on a regular basis. Health care system is so bloated and broken"

He's not a nurse he is more of a management position so I believe he knows what he's talking about

And of those icu beds, how many are negative pressure isolation?

When triaging, how do you know who to keep separate from who if you don't have a test to identify immediately? Can you separate all respiratory cases in their own isolation room until the results come back 48h later?

BTW, if you haven't seen the show Counterpart then you should. The premise is an experiment splits the world in two, both identical in every way but then they begin to diverge and their worlds develop differently. Along the way one world blames the other of introducing a flu epidemic that kills off 7% of the population and thus gives rise to terrorist activities. It is only two seasons, available on Amazon Prime--I think it is a Stars or Showtime show that just got canceled.

Arizona prisons aren't allowing visitors for the duration of the current unpleasantness.

Prisoners in state prisons already face numerous problems. Overcrowding/understaffing, food shortages, and they often can't get good cleaners or disinfectants since prison administrations are often afraid of what the prisoners might do with something like alcohol or bleach. Georgia prisons only get watered-down "pine scent" cleaner, which has some kind of disinfectant in it, but it's nothing strong. The house men(orderlies) who control the influx of supplies for cleaning dilute it and then sell it to fellow inmates who need a better cleaner for their cells.

Prisons are filthy environments full of unnecessary bacterial and viral exposure. HepC and HIV cases have been a problem in the past, as well as drug-resistant TB that often comes in with immigrant prisoners. Surface-level staph is common. One little cut, and you'll have a nasty bump that you'll just have to gut out for awhile. Medical might do something or they might not.

Even with 23/1 lockdown, inmates are still crammed into cells holding 2-3x as many people as the cells were designed to hold, and they still get their meals delivered to them by designated orderlies that could easily infect the rest of the population unless they are carefully screened for covid-19. Given the lackluster disease screening in prisons already, I would not expect most authorities to prioritize the delivery of test kits to correctional facilities.

And those are just the state facilities. County camps can be much worse depending on the country. Inmates are constantly being classified and moved from one facility to the next according to the need of state correctional departments. Federal prisons should be managed somewhat better. Some federal inmates are housed in state facilities though, which is a profit center for states/counties who have the capacity.

Sambucol's FAQ sheds no light that I can see on the zinc content of their products.

One thing to remember is that a lot of these cold remedies are "homeopathic". The little multiplier tells you how many times it's been diluted. More dilution = less zinc. I think Sambucol has 3mg zinc per dose. Pretty sure their label is 6x?

Yeah I kinda figured, wishful thinking I guess. Either way this great drop in CO2 and pollutants in general is probably still good to some extent but only short term I guess. Basically with cruise ships pretty much halted, lot of air travel halting, factories in China and perhaps even cargo ships that's a big chunk of the world pollution. Cars and gas appliances are still running at normal capacity though.

Do not fear. Someday, human industry will tap into the carbon cycle directly, harvesting carbon cheaply from the environment for the purpose of advanced material synthesis. Those materials will not decay naturally. The problem we have now will pale in comparison to what we can cause in the future. Enjoy.

Im super confused about if you can get it from eating food that was improperly handled.

Foodborne illness is a constant threat. If the restaurant has proper food handling procedures, you won't get things like HepA or what have you. The most common foodborne illnesses:

Notice that not many people get influenza from Taco Bell food! I would much rather keep as many restaurants open as possible with carryout or delivery. You can screen the workers instead of having to screen everyone who enters the restaurant, and it would keep people out of the supermarkets a bit.

What's funny is that it's a ghost town EVERYWHERE except where the food is...restaurants & grocery stores are PACKED!
You will not see me in a restaurant until this is OVER. I'm gonna be as careful as I reasonably can be shopping for groceries.

I feel like it spreads in more ways than we currently know. That's what I meant by it. Maybe it spreads by the exhalation of air as well, not just droplets.

I don't know, just trying to grasp at how fast and wide this thing has spread.

II don't normally do this - but now when it comes to groceries I will only do the ones where they deliver the groceries to my trunk.

Of all the times to pay slightly extra for this - it makes total sense.

It's spreading exponentially, as it is predicted to, and it also happens to be quite virulent. From what we know so far, it isn't "airborne" - it does need droplets to transmit. But when people are asymptomatic, they are still shedding thousands of viruses, maybe they wipe their nose, touch a door, etc...

From a Reuter's article, one person in SK is responsible for infecting >1000 people.

And some of the spread we're seeing could be attributed to increasing availability of testing. As more can get tested, more cases will become confirmed.

Another random covid19 thought I had today : So we have the seasonal flu right? I guess the reason the seasonal flu survives a season and makes a comeback the following year (and mutates into new strains) is due to its massive uptake around the planet, it simply moves round the globe, round and round and round it goes.

Could Covid19 become a seasonal thing?

There's reasons for "flu season" though - this gets into what people have been talking about with "rumors" of during summer months your chances might go down. While slightly true, it definitely isn't going to stop a pandemic.

Reasons listed for "flu season" https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Flu_season

  • People are indoors more often during the winter, they are in close contact more often, and this promotes transmission from person to person.
  • A seasonal decline in the amount of ultraviolet radiation may reduce the likelihood of the virus being damaged or killed by direct radiation damage or indirect effects (i. e. ozone concentration) increasing the probability of infection.
  • Cold temperatures lead to drier air, which may dehydrate mucous membranes, preventing the body from effectively defending against respiratory virus infections.[2][3][4]
  • Viruses are preserved in colder temperatures due to slower decomposition, so they linger longer on exposed surfaces (doorknobs, countertops, etc.).
  • In nations where children do not go to school in the summer, there is a more pronounced beginning to flu season, coinciding with the start of public school. It is thought that the day care environment is perfect for the spread of illness.
  • Vitamin D production from Ultraviolet-B in the skin changes with the seasons and affects the immune system.[5][6][7]

Ultimately, we aren't informed enough on Covid19 to know how quickly it can spread and to what degree the warmer weather will have on it. Suffice it to say though, while cases rise in the winter months it CERTAINLY doesn't stop it.

My line of thinking is that, can covid19 reach “critical mass” and become something we cant get rid of cause it mutates... like the regular flu. We cant go through this shit ~once pr year

Heh - but what are hotels + airliners charging there?

I mean shit - if it's that cheap I'll headout tomorrow for a mini-vacation.

Chances are these guys still have their heads up their ass though and are charging outrageous prices given the situation.

$300/night hotels should be $50 tops. Flights should be $50 each way max as well.
I was already getting most of this trip double comped between a conference and hotel rewards points. Hotels are still around $250+ a night and resort food/bevs are expensive, as usual. Airfare is pretty low right now.

Or we can't deal with x% of the population suffering from decreased lung function as a nasty side effect.

I'm curious what chemicals China is spraying to disinfect the streets.

It mutates.

Anyone expert enough on viruses to tell me whether different viruses have different capabilties for mutation? Flu mutates, clearly it does, that's why it keeps coming round again. But do all types of virus have equal potential to do that?

Welp, all of my shit is canceled for at least 2 weeks.

I bought Read Dead Redemption 2 a while back. Maybe I can go college-style and sink into my couch and play thought that thing.

I wish I had weed.

It's crazy how easily this thing spreads. I know we live in interconnected world but this doesn't pass smell test.

Why not? We do indeed live in an interconnected world, though, that is very clear. I keep seeing outbreaks in all the remote obscure places that I would have thought would make nice safe boltholes (The Faroe Isles have multiple cases! I'm expecting to hear there are outbreaks on R'lyeh next.)

Now the authorities are saying they expect this to go on for another year, and for 80% of the population to catch it. That's a year of worrying about all the elderly people I know, and a year of the healthcare system being constantly strained to capacity.

I went to asian mart tonight and bought $600 worth of groceries. Shit is hitting the fan. US is going same route as Italy, Spain, and France. I think they're going to close all retail stores except grocery stores and pharmacies. It's coming. And when that happens, you won't be able to buy the grocery you want. Prepare yourself.

Just for kicks I went to Winstar casino on Saturday. I wore surgical gloves. There were a fair amount of people, but less than half of usual. Lots of people had gloves and face masks.

After a few hours my gloves turned dark. Those machines were filthy!

Lost $295. Was down almost $900 at one point and won my way back up. Even was up $250 before going back down quickly and deciding to leave.

Self quarantined in the shower for a while. :)

Makes you wonder how often they clean those machines... probably never or very rarely. I'm sure there's plenty of viruses and other pathogens on those hoping they get lucky. :p

I get to "work from home" for the next two weeks with my wife and daughter in the house. That should be distracting as hell.

I heard wine can help kill viruses if you catch it early enough. I don't know if it's true, but it's worth a shot! :p
i like how you never replied the direct quote about staying in your own country even with out the virus :)
good thing you came back to say more silly things about drinking wine, like alcohol will ever help your immune system, did you ever google zinc and these things called vitamins? u could use some of your free time with that.
