Did he say black people can't swim? 😕

Should be somewhat accurate...
"training down there. I commanded an infantry company and we were practicing crossing a river. You know, an infantry company has 140 some-odd soldiers. A large number were black. I grew up in Alabama and I understand and I know this from my own experiences that blacks aren?t the best swimmers or may not even know how to swim. But we were crossing this and wanted to make sure every soldier"

Well, here's the deal. When I was growing up, many of my black friends refused to go swimming (at the lake or the pool.) They said they couldn't swim, and really had no desire to do so.

Perhaps it's simply a cultural thing. I even remember an episode of MTV's Cribs that showed some guy talking about his pool and how he's never been in it - and made some comment like "You know us black folks and swimmiing don't mix."

So yeah, it's not like a totally foreign idea or concept from this guy - there is some history of it, whether true or not.

I would say alot more blacks don't know how to swim compared to whites. I don't know why it's like that but from what I've seen, it's true.

he is a republican right?

Yup. This is definitive proof that all Republicans are racist!

That's what you headed for right?

I'm neither a Republican or Democrat (I dislike both parties), but Republicans, IMO, are genuinely less racist than Democrats, even though it may not seem like it on the outside.

My dad is black and my mom is white, and I simply CANNOT SWIM! It's crazy, I think it's my bone density. My body just will not float. I've tried everything it's impossible.

lol, awesome

Not only can I not swim, I can't even float properly.

Damn my extra bone density and super-duper calf muscles! Damn them to record-setting-long-jump-distance hell!

ok, i laughed so hard at that not because there is any inkling of truth in what he said but that someone could actually believe that is true.

Lol? I'm guessing you don't live around many black people. It's not that there is some physical difference (bone density wtf?) but a lot of blacks just never learn to swim. For whatever reason, it's not as important (in general) to blacks. The sad thing is how absurd a comment like that becomes in our democracy.

so how is this a racist comment?

I didnt take his words as a future congressman but as a former commander who knew the demigraphic of his men in his company. If the majority of his men were black and they were crossing a river and he knows from past experience that most of the black soldiers he has commanded did not know how to swim then thats a problem and as a commander he needs to address it. he is responsible for the safty of his men.

blacks in general, will not swim, and do not care to swim.

I grew up around black people and here's how it was explained to me: The reason most white people like to go to the beach/pools/etc., isn't really to swim, it's to sunbathe - something black people would have little use for. So it makes sense that they wouldn't congregate at the local pool like white people do - and thusly, not as many of them would learn to swim.

maybe the black people around here have just adapted to the surroundings a little, because they all know how to swim.haha jk

What is REALLY funny about this is that what he said was political suicide not due to the demographic innaccuracy of his statement (it was based, as he said, on his experiences), but rather the hypersensitivity of people to racially based statements.

As people have pointed out, there are a lot of black people who do not swim. It is a cultural thing, not a genetic thing.

In other news, black guys don't eat the p*********...

Well dammit, that just makes too much damn sense!

You can no longer make generalizations about any group without being labeled a racist - unless you're part of that group or one of about 10 comedians.

What is even sadder, is that hes the candidate for senator. Senator, for crying out loud. How can you honestly be at the threshold of that level of public office and not realize that talking about differences between races is one of the touchiest and most often misunderstood topics that anyone can be stupid enough to open their mouths about? If you're going to even make a comment, at least be smart enough to compliment the other races.

He's running for Congress actually, not the Senate.

😕

I think in comedy anything is open. However; most are not trying to be funny when they make racist comments.

I really don't see how this is racist, all of the black people I know hate swiming and have no fear of telling you.

Because all of the black people you know are not all the black people that exist.
